THE DINER IS BACK!
« on: October 29, 2012, 11:41:36 PM »
Well, after an EXTREMELY frustrating day, I finally got the Diner back up here.  YAY.

Apparently we were getting more than our allotted number of Page Hits of 1000/day, except we have been getting that many for quite some time.  Powweb also does not specify this in their Terms of Service either.  Here for your reading pleasure is my last chat with Online Support:

Thank you for contacting us.

In order to ensure that we’re chatting with an authorized account owner, please be prepared to answer your security question when we begin chatting. If you have not yet set your Security Question and Answer, please log into your account now to set it up.

At the end of our conversation, please keep this window open and complete our one question survey to let us know how we’re doing.

Please hold for the next available operator to respond.

You are now chatting with 'Nina Scott'

Nina Scott: Hi, how are you today?

RE: Very Frustrated

Nina Scott: I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Nina Scott: What exactly seems to be the issue?

RE: I have been trying to get my site up all day, not getting responses, getting cut off of live support, etc

Nina Scott: May I place you on hold for 3 or 4 minutes while I review your account?

RE: I am informed we get too many page hits, so I need to buy more bandwidth. I was informed it would cost more money, I am fine with this. Charge me for it and lets get the site back up please.

Nina Scott: Thank you for holding.

Nina Scott: We have un-suspended your website now.

Nina Scott: You can access your website now.

RE: THANK YOU!

Nina Scott: It's my pleasure!

Nina Scott: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

RE: Can you INFORM me next time BEFORE you suspend service so we can adjust the account without disrupting the service?

Nina Scott: Unfortunately, we do not send any email before un-suspending your website.

RE: Why not?

Nina Scott: If your website is overloading our servers, our security specialists will suspend your website and send an email.

RE: What is the next limtation I need to watch out for as far as a Server Overload is concerned so I can adjust BEFORE the site gets suspended?

Nina Scott: Thank you for your patience. I will be back with some more information in 3 to 4 minutes.

RE: OK

Nina Scott: You can refer to our Terms of Service at http://www.powweb.com/legal/legal_aup.bml for the details about our policy on high resource consuming websites.

RE: That material doesn't say anything about being limited to 1000 Page Hits, only bandwidth which we did NOT exceed.

Nina Scott: There is no any exact limit.

Nina Scott: Since we support shared hosting, we have suspended your website.

RE: So how can I prepare here?

RE: Site suspension are very disruptive. I want to avoid them and if I know what the parameters are I can adjust. If I don;t know the parmeters, I can't tackle the problem before the suspension.

Nina Scott: You can password protect your website.

RE: I don't want to do that, I am trying to make the site BIGGER.

Nina Scott: You can contact our sister company IPOWER and signup for VPS hosting plan.

RE: I will do that when necessary, but I need to know WHEN it will be necessary.

Nina Scott: You need to take necessary action from your end.

RE: I will take the necessary action for sure, but I need to know when such action is necessary.

Nina Scott: It is not possible to provide that information.

RE: Why not?

Nina Scott: You can check Terms of Services and take necessary actions to avoid this.

RE: Sigh. OK, I will review them again, and thanks for getting us back up this time. Hoepfully we can avoid this in the future.

Nina Scott: It's my pleasure!

Nina Scott: Thank you for chatting with us. Please feel free to contact us at any time. We are available 24x7.

Nina Scott: Bye!

RE: Bye.

As you can see, it is IMPOSSIBLE to know when they will decide you are using too much Bandwidth and need to Upgrade your account, and rather than telling you in advance, they just whack the website and you gotta fix AFTER the problem hits.

Anyhow, I set up another Forum at http://doomsteaddiner.createaforum.com where the next time we get some issue like this you can go to find out WTF is going on.  Also, go to the Diner Facepalm Page or the Doomstead Diner Yahoo Group, hopefully ONE of them is functioning.  If they are ALL down SIMULTANEOUSLY, then chances are RE bought his Ticket to GITMO.

Also, Diners should exchange Email Addys with other Diners so we can do Chain Mailing in a major disruption event.  I also handed my Cell Phone Number off to Surly and WHD, so contact them also.

Now, back to our Regularly Scheduled FRANKENSTORM DOOM.

For a moment I thought the Feds had finally caught RE and were sending him to the closest detention centre for interrogations. Glad to see you are safe and sound and you have the problem resolved. Too bad the person could not actually offer any advice but I suppose that could be a ploy to get you to hand over more of your bucks for peace of mind. I have never participated in a denial of service event (at least to my knowledge) but have been a victim of one with a website I used to run.

Yea, I forked over more MONEY, so now we are only sharing with a few other sites on this server instead of hundreds.

Don't be surprised if you see a Tip Bucket go up here in the Diner pretty soon.  It's starting to cost REAL MONEY to keep this project going.  I'll avoid the ads as long as the Diners Pony Up enough to Pay da Bills.  However, at least at the moment I will cover it myself.  Thank my Grandpa the Bootlegger for that.

This exchange is truly Kafkaesque.

Take great solace that they are available 24x7 to deny service and provide obfuscation.

Just maddening.

Diner Crash & Burn Prep Plans-ARCHIVISTS NEEDED!!!!
« Reply #5 on: October 30, 2012, 03:27:20 AM »
Yesterday we had our second Major Outtage on the Diner.  Along with all you Diners, I ALSO could not access the Diner until I got it all straightened out with the Powweb Geeks and forked over more MONEY.

We do have alternate Sites up, the Doomstead Diner FacePalm Page, the Doomstead Diner Yahoo Group and the Doomstead Diner Createaforum.  Bookmark all these sites to get Updates whenever we get Main Diner Site Outtages.

Bigger problem though is what will be LOST if I cannot get the main Diner site up and running for some reason.  I don't have copies of all my articles.  I certainly do not have copies of everything written inside the Forum.

I am going to start on Copying all the articles and saving them as Word Files on my hard drive.  This strips out the Vids, but the pics mostly remain.  The formatting doesn't come out too bad though usually.

I would appreciate it if any other Diners also undertake to copy and save the Diner Articles in case we lose access to this server for some reason.  Mainly the Native Diner articles, not the Cross posted ones from other websites.  It is a time consuming process, there are a lot of articles here now.  The more hard drives we can get them on, the better to insure none of this gets lost immediately.

Please let me know if you are Archiving Diner Articles on your Hard Drive in case we lose this server.   Also, if you print them out or convert to Acrobat files.

I have thousands of hours of work involved in this project, uncountable hours really.  Today I woke up to the fact it can ALL disappear nearly instantaneously, and I have no record of it.

Any help you can give me in archiving on your hard drives will be appreciated.

That was only the LAST exchange with the Support Team Surly.  I was all day with this while trying to work also.  I don't have any of the other live chats recorded, but I have the Support Log, which is just as frustrating, especially since I got ZIPPO back for more than 8 hours there.  Only after I got off work and made myself more of a nuisance did I finally get some action.

REALLY ANNOYING.

Hi RE...  What is causing the problem is the "Recent Topics" link on the menu. It appears that each time it is used it generates a sort operation to build a custom index (in the form of an xml file).  This uses quite a bit of CPU time each time it is used. The "recent posts" block at the bottom of the home page gives the same info but in a more CPU efficient way without forcing a sort each time the list is accessed. I believe I could increase the number of listings displayed in that list.

The bandwidth the forum is using is well within the tolerance of the account but the CPU time being generated by using "recent posts" is causing a problem for the server. I haven't checked the access log yet to see if the use was legitimate or if someone used "recent posts" to cause a problem. As you can see it is a way to easily take a forum down.

Let me know if you want me to remove "Recent Posts" from the menu.

Peter

On my home computer, every time I try to get the main blog page w/ articles it kicks me to "Powweb."

On another machine I used today it did not do that.

Any thoughts?  A cookie somewhere here that isn't getting onto the other machine?

Try deleting the cookies and cache that your internet browser uses. Hopefully that will resolve your problem.

You'll notice that "Recent  Topics"  is now gone from the menu. It was what caused the suspension. Using the choice often created too much CPU use on the hosting site to create a list of the 50 most recent posts each time it was used by anyone. Near the bottom of the home page is a block of the most recent posts. It used to show the 10 most recent posts but I increased it to 30. This is not as convenient to view as "Recent posts" was but it doesn't generate a new list every time someone views it, only when new posts are added.

Thanks Peter for the Tweaks to the Forum platform.

Although this was a major pain, on the UP side with the additional bandwidth and Peter's tweaks, the Diner is running faster than ever now.  :icon_mrgreen:

Keeping my fingers crossed we have no further issues for a while.

Reminder to all Mods, it is important to NAIL SPAMMERS FAST!  If I am not at the laptop, the minute one of these assholes starts Spamming, BAN HIS ASS, including the IP.  Getting rid of the Spam posts is secondary, place the Ban FIRST, then go to deleting any Spam that went up.

In case you missed it, the Diner had another Service Outtage today for about 4 hours.  This one does not appear to be directly related to Diner Traffic, according to the Host there was some other problem on the back end of the server, whatever that means.

Remember the alternate site info above, and start making Diner Backup Copies!
