Questions Raised by Jeffrey Epstein’s Death

Readers discuss the decision to take him off suicide watch and other aspects of the case that have led to speculation that the full story is not yet known.

To the Editor:

Re “At End, Epstein Was Left Alone in His Jail Cell” (front page, Aug. 12):

The death of Jeffrey Epstein is stirring up conspiracy theories on a vast scale. Consider the rich and powerful people, often of dubious character, who surrounded him; his inexplicable path to wealth and social connections; the strange miscarriage of justice in his 2008 nonprosecution agreement in Florida; the odd circumstances of his conveniently timed death; an attorney general tainted by unseemly fealty to President Trump in charge of investigation; and the countless sexually exploited children that touch all aspects of his story.

Any official conclusion is doomed to be unsatisfactory. You needn’t be paranoid, or subscribe to implausible scenarios, to believe that some people will escape justice and that the public will never know the full truth.

James Fredricksen

To the Editor:

Re “Scrutiny Engulfs Center for Lifting Epstein Suicide Watch” (news article, Aug. 11):

Six days after his first suicide attempt, Jeffrey Epstein was “taken off the suicide watch for reasons that remained unclear on Saturday.” For one of the largest pedophile cases in history involving high-profile politicians and individuals of enormous wealth and power, this “mistake” is an insult to the victims, the public and the justice system of the United States. This is the ultimate in corruption at the highest levels of law enforcement, and if Attorney General William P. Barr is so “appalled to learn” about Mr. Epstein’s death in federal custody, why didn’t he do his job to make sure this never happened?

There has to be a thorough investigation that confirms that this was in fact a suicide by hanging, and not another nefarious event that has surrounded the Epstein criminal case from the beginning. The investigation must continue against him and his co-conspirators even if he did take the easy way out.

To the Editor:

The death by hanging of Jeffrey Epstein while in federal custody may have been preventable, but not by closer monitoring. By protocol Mr. Epstein was supposed to be checked every 30 minutes, but reportedly was not.

Although it is a standard protocol for inmates and inpatients deemed to be at suicide risk, close monitoring by observers every 30 minutes, or more typically every 15 minutes, cannot prevent a death by asphyxiation that takes a mere four to six minutes to occur. Studies have documented that a large percentage of individuals who died by suicide in institutional care (36 percent in one study, 51 percent in another) were on 15-minute checks or even one-to-one observation at the time of death.

Many suicides are preventable by a variety of other methods, but not by close or frequent monitoring.

To the Editor:

I find it ironic that there is so much attention paid to the death of the disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to the point where the attorney general, the F.B.I., and the Inspector General, the Justice Department’s internal watchdog, will open an investigation.

What I would like to know is for how many other prisoners who commit suicide do all of these agencies start an investigation? Let me guess: none! So what makes Mr. Epstein’s life and death so much more important than any other prisoner’s? Is it the fact that he was rich and powerful?

Once again, this simply demonstrates the clear inequality that exists between the have and have-nots — even in death.

Former MCC inmate: There’s ‘no way’ Jeffrey Epstein killed himself

The following account is from a former inmate of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan, where Jeffrey Epstein was found unresponsive Saturday, and declared dead at a hospital of an apparent suicide. The ex-convict, who spoke to The Post’s Brad Hamilton and Bruce Golding on the condition of anonymity, spent several months in the 9 South special housing unit for high-profile prisoners awaiting trial — like Epstein.

There’s no way that man could have killed himself. I’ve done too much time in those units. It’s an impossibility.

Between the floor and the ceiling is like 8 or 9 feet. There’s no way for you to connect to anything.

You have sheets, but they’re paper level, not strong enough. He was 200 pounds — it would never happen.

When you’re on suicide watch, they put you in this white smock, a straitjacket. They know a person cannot be injurious to themselves.

The clothing they give you is a jump-in uniform. Everything is a dark brown color.

Could he have done it from the bed? No sir. There’s a steel frame, but you can’t move it. There’s no light fixture. There’s no bars.

They don’t give you enough in there that could successfully create an instrument of death. You want to write a letter, they give you rubber pens and maybe once a week a piece of paper.

Nothing hard or made of metal.

There’s up to 80 people there. They could put two in cell. It’s one or two, but I’ll never believe this guy had a cellmate. He was too blown up.

The damage that unit can do to someone.

It’s like you’re an animal and you’ve been brought into a kennel. A guy like Jeffrey, it’s like, “Holy sh-t.”

I told my parents not to come there. God wasn’t in the building.

I’ve had some heavy incidents in the building. What happened is permanent.

Some of the guards are on a major power trip. They know guys there are suffering. They know something the rest of the world hasn’t seen, that a place like this exists in this country, and they get off on it.

If the guards see that the guy is breaking, they’re going to help you break.

But it’s my firm belief that Jeffrey Epstein did not commit suicide. It just didn’t happen.

He was rich enough to be able to bring in his own food and stuff like that.  He was not on the same kind of suicide watch that a normal person would endure.  He bought himself privileges and since he had already been in the country club prison system before he wasted no time getting things set up right, for him.  Problem here is that his privileges gave his enemies opportunity.
Under ideal conditions of temperature and pressure the organism will grow without limit.

Tesla Talk

In August 2018, New York Times columnist James B. Stewart met with sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, agreeing that he wouldn’t reveal Epstein as the source of any quotes from the conversation.

But now that Epstein has died of an apparent suicide, The New York Times has published a detailed account of the 90-minute-long meeting — and it had a lot to do with Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

  • The two prison guards assigned to monitor registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein fell asleep during their shift and failed to check on Epstein for three hours the night he died of an apparent suicide, multiple sources told The New York Times.
  • They are alleged to have falsified records to hide the mistake (a potential federal crime), The Times reports.
  • There were reportedly multiple breaches in protocol regarding the supervision of Epstein: he was being housed alone and not being checked on by guards every 30 minutes.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The two prison guards assigned to monitor Jeffrey Epstein in a high-security jail fell asleep for three hours, the night he died of an apparent suicide, The New York Times reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed officials.

The guards also allegedly falsified a log to hide the mistake, according to The Times.

Both guards have since been placed on administrative leave, and a warden for the Metropolitan Correctional Center has been temporarily reassigned, following Epstein's death.

The guards were working overtime shifts, as the high-security Manhattan jail was short-staffed around the time of Epstein's apparent suicide. A source told The Associated Press that the Special Housing Unit where Epstein was held was "staffed with one guard working a fifth straight day of overtime and another who was working mandatory overtime."

According to The Times, one of the two staff members "was a former correctional officer who had taken a different position at the detention center that did not involve guarding detainees," but volunteered to work for the overtime pay. The other officer was working mandatory overtime to make up for staffing shortages.

Business Insider could not immediately reach the Department of Justice or the MCC for comment.

According to reports, there were multiple breaches in protocol regarding the supervision of Epstein: prison guards were required to check on Epstein every 30 minutes, which they failed to do, officials told The Times, and Epstein was being housed alone after his cellmate was transferred and was not replaced.

Epstein, who was charged with sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking, was placed on suicide watch after he was found unconscious with bruises on July 23. After he was removed from suicide watch near the end of July, he was transferred to a housing unit in one of the most restrictive wings of the Metropolitan Correctional Center. He was found unresponsive in his cell Saturday morning. After attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Attorney General William Barr expressed outrage that the financier had been left unsupervised and assured that "there will be accountability." Both the FBI and the Office of the Inspector General are investigating.

"We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation," Barr told The Times. "We will get to the bottom of what happened."
