Tamago (Japanese Egg Cake or Omelette)

You could almost count this as another style of cooking eggs, except there are usually ingredients added to it, Mirin and Sake.

I have made Tamago a few times, but it is a pain in the ass.  First off, you need a square pan to do it, and this isn't in a normal set of cooking gear, and you don't use such a pan for much else.  You also have to have the temperature set JUST right, and then you have to be pretty good at flipping over the cake as it grows without breaking it.  Then you also have to cook in fairly large batches of 6-8 eggs at a time.  I do like the resulting finished product, but not THAT much more that it is worth all the trouble to do it.  Here's a video on how to make tamago.

Another cheap day.  I never loaded up my sandwich with that much Bologna or Cheese though.  3 slices of Bologna, 2 slices of Cheese, Mustard.  1 package of Bologna and one package American Cheese would last around 3 weeks.

Bologna & Cheese

Apple (Delicious variety)

Coke

Cheerios

Oreos

A little more expensive today, Tuna Fish.  Not that much more though, because the cans were bigger back then and I could get 2 weeks worth of tuna sandwiches out of 1 can.

MONSTER LOBSTER!

This tops the biggest one I ever had, which was around 3.5 lbs.  This "Mother of all Lobsters" weighs in at 10 lbs!  :o  Even subtracting the shell weight, if this guy ate the whole thing at one sitting by himself, that is real P-I-G territory.

Today's lunch came in REALLY cheap for RE back in elementary school, because I didn't have to buy the ground beef for the meat loaf, mom bought that for dinner and I just cut off a slice to use for my sandwich.  She also bought the Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions etc because those were used for other meals besides my lunch bag.  Same with condiments like mayo, mustard and ketchup.  This was a cheat on the budget of course, but really not that much.  I still could have stayed in budget if I had to buy it all myself with my $5/week, just fewer comic books!  :(

Mom's recipe for meatloaf wasn't too complicated.  Ground beef, diced &sauteed onions, a can of Campbell's vegetable soup, eggs and Progresso Italian flavored breadcrumbs.  It was pretty good, one of her better dishes.  I would shape the Meatloaf so the slices would fit PERFECTLY on a slice of Wonder Bread.  :icon_sunny:

Not my favorite at home breakfast (the fruit improves it though), but once Quaker Oats came out with the Instant Oats flavored oatmeal packages, it became a staple of my breakfasts while out camping.  Apple-Cinnamon flavor was my favorite.

Friday has arrived, so this is the last Bag Lunch of the week.  I saved the best for last, STEAK Sandwich.  :icon_sunny:  This again came in cheap for me because mom bought the steaks which I BBQed on the weekends.  I always saved enough for at least one steak sandwich.  We didn't do this every weekend though, maybe every other weekend in good weather.  In winter, maybe once a month.

By no means is this list of Bag Lunches complete of course, there are many more you can put together at a reasonable cost for your kids.  Quite a bit better and more nutritious than what you get from the school cafeteria, although if you qualify as a poor person for FREE meals there, that's the way to go on that one.  You can't beat free.

Next week's Lunch Series will be focusing on SOUPS!  Tune in for the best in soup meals here at the Doomstead Diner next week.

RE

Steak, Mushrooms & Onion Sandwich

Peach

Root Beer

Pistachio Nuts

Sara Lee Pound Cake

I usually would buy a cup of Vanilla Ice Cream from the cafeteria to go with the Pound Cake slice.  BIG DESERT!  :icon_sunny:

Interestingly, there is no Lobster in Lobster Sauce.

There are also numerous variations on this one.  This is the one looks most like the ones I had in Chinatown back in NY Shity.  Served with white sticky rice on the side.

The most basic of Omelettes, the humble Cheese Omelette.  Well, there is such a thing as a "Plain Omelette", but to me that is no different than Scrambled Eggs, other than the fact you can brown the outside if you like it that way.  I don't.

Even with just cheese though, there are a lot of variations, since there are so many cheeses.  My first Cheese Omelettes were of course with Amerikan "Cheese Product" from Kraft.  You know, the "cheese with the paper between the slices".  Later replaced by individually wrapping in plastic.  I finally discovered Swiss cheese was better and stopped using the fake cheese from Kraft.

The Diner will be putting many different Omelettes on Special in the future.  We're running out of different styles of egg cooking.  ::)

As you eat, remember the words of Uncle Joe Stalin.  "You can't make an Omelette without breaking a few Eggs."
