Doomstead Diner Sunday Smörgåsbord: 1/14/2018
« Reply #152 on: January 14, 2018, 05:27:50 AM »
I'm changing the name of the Sunday opening meal from "Brunch" to "Smörgåsbord".  Instead of the whole buffet, you get just my selections of stuff from the buffet tables (at least what I can Google up anyhow):icon_sunny:  The close up pics of the plates are much more mouth watering in general.  Only two meals on Sunday since the Smörgåsbord has so much food and comes later in the day than typical breakfast.  Still working on Dinner choice for tonight.  ???  Suggestions :hi:!

This was one of my mom's favorites, and I developed a taste for it too.  You don't have to be fancy like the pie below, you just buy a pint of blueberries, a cup of sour cream and you scoop out a spoonful of each into your mouth. Tastes just like the pie, and no dishes to do!  You get about 3 days of breakfasts from this.

It's Soup4Lunch Week here on the Diner!

To qualify as a full meal pretty much by itself, the soup (or gumbo or stew or chili) has to be stomach filling and rich, with all the nutritional ingredients of protein, fat, carbs and vitamins contained in the soup.  You can add crusty day old bread for dipping, or crackers, croutons, goldfish, fried egg noodles etc to fill it out.

Starting off the week with a personal favorite, New England Clam Chowder.  I like the Manhattan Clam Chowder also which is tomato based, but the New England chowder in the cream base is richer in calories, if not so much in flavor.  I did run across a really flavorful version down in WA when visiting with K-Dog though at an Ivar's restaurant which is a lcal chain with both fine restaurants and seaside clam shacks.  The good one I had was at one of the fine restaurants, the one at the clam shack was not so good.

This one is for the Vegans out there.  Indian cooking has a lot of good Vegan dishes.

I like other nuts like macadamias and pistachios in my Brownies also, but you have to make those yourself.  Not usually available in commercial establishments.  The Diner will feature them though!  Together with your Endless Espresso, a High Energy start on the day!

Also known as "Jewish Penicillin", Matzoh Ball Soup has it all!  Rich protein filled chicken broth, easily digested protein, carbs and fat in fluffy Matzoh Balls, and vitamins and roughage from the carrots and celery.  Eat a bowl a week and you'll never get the flu!  Better than vaccines.

Many pepole eat Gravlax the same way the eat Nova or Lox, on a Bagel with Cream Cheese.  IMHO however, because it is not smoked, only cured, Gravlax has a more delicate texture and flavor which should be enjoyed on its own, with a caper or two in each bite.  Just the FISH please! Slice thin and roll into rose like pinwheels for a nice presentation.

Today's Soup4Lunch meal is Black Bean soup.  There are many variants on this one also, the one I like has sausage in it and is a soup version of Feijoada.  You can add to this sour cream and avocado as in the illustration, corn kernels, carrots, etc as you please.  Real stick to the ribs meal!
