🐙 Doomstead Diner Dinner Special 5/10/2019

It's Fish Friday here at the Diner again!

For today's choice of seafood, we're going with a new one, Octopus!  Octopus aren't really "fish", they're Mollusks but I count anything you pull up our of the ocean or fresh water as fish.  Lobsters and crabs aren't fish either, they're Crustaceans.  OK, I don't count frogs, turtles and alligators as fish, they're Reptiles or Amphibians.  Anyhow, regardless of the actual biological taxonomy, for eating purposes I count them as fish.

Unfortunately I can't get Octopus from any of the food superstores around here, they just don't sell enough to carry it, even frozen.  I can get it at Tokyo the local decent Asian restaurant around here, and sometimes a baby octopus salad at the Sushi counter at the food superstore, but not often there.

Today I did score some HUGE Lobster Tails at 3 Bears, about 5X the size of those last ones I steamed up for the Cooking Zone which were delicious.  Not cheap at $25/lb, but lobster tails that size in a restaurant would cost a whole lot more than that.  I'm keeping them in the freezer though for a while, I have a lot of other stuff I need to cook up first.  I'll save them for a special occasion.

Now lets cyber consume some Octopus, fixed Korean style!

It's National Chocolate Chip Day! Here's how you can get free cookies.

Earlier this week, we reported on Häagen-Dazs' earth-friendly initiative. The company behind the delicious frozen deserts announced they would be giving away a free ice cream cone upon purchase at any of their chosen locations. The latter was to support efforts to protect the honey-bee, an insect currently on the verge of extinction due to climate change and the over-use of pesticides. As such, the company offered treats to its clients with the hope of raising awareness for the beloved honey-bees. While Häagen-Dazs gave you both a delicious treat and opportunity to make a difference in the world, today's news is simply for the benefit of your belly.

It is officially National Chocolate Chip Day and brands are offering free cookies. Even Cookie Monster's official Twitter released a statement to celebrate the holiday. As such, Nestle Tollhouse Cafe locations are giving away freebies today. Precisely, every customer can get a free chocolate chip cookie and so without having to make any purchases whatsoever. Just hit up one of the 140 locations. Potbelly Sandwich Shop is also offering a free cookie, with the purchase of any items on Wednesday, May 15th. So make sure you head over before they run out.

Happy National Chocolate Chip Day!

It's Meat Monday here at the Diner again!

Guest Chef flying in from Mejico today is Jamie, doing his specialty combination Dry Aging and Sous Vide, this time adding Torch Searing to the Beef Flesh.  The twist for this episode is he does 2 different forms of dry aging, one done with vacuum sealing in membrane bags, the other coating the beef in Butter.  2nd method uses a SHIT LOAD of butter!  ::)

We'll get round to trying something similar on the Cooking Zone eventually, but for now I am seriously backlogged with editing tasks on other vids and not cooking anything new for a while.

It's Meat Monday here at the Diner again!

Our Guest Chef for today is John Townshend again, this time back from a trip to the 18th Century in his Mr. Fusion powered flying DeLorean.

Out on the trail, smoking Bison to make Jerky the Old-Fashioned Way.  I wish they had gone ahead and made a stew out of it with some wild edible tubers rather than just chewing the dried strips, but maybe he'll do that in a future episode.

As usual, the most fun part about these vids are the costumes.  :icon_sunny:

It's Steak Saturday here at the Diner again!

Chef Eddie Lookalike and Soundalike (CELAS) is BACK with his spin on cooking up the perfect Prime Rib.  :icon_sunny:

CELAS is not out at the Chuck Wagon feeding the Cowboys today, he's home in the Kitchen prepping up dinner for his guests, apparently 2 dogs and his wife.

I would have sliced up the roast a little sooner at maybe 125F and MUCH thicker slices too!  Otherwise though, its a good recipe.  Prime Rib is not a real hard dish to prepare, but you do have to set aside time for it to cook up.  You'll also save a bundle on what you will pay for it in a restaurant.    For the price of one Prime Rib steak meal in a restaurant, you can buy a whole standing rib roast at Costco.  Then you can REALLY Pig Out 🐷!

🍜 Doomstead Diner Food History: Udon Noodles
« Reply #1310 on: June 12, 2019, 07:58:21 AM »
Pasta Wednesday here in the Diner Kitchen again!

Not the usual Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner recipe from a guest Chef today.  Today we'll start looking at the History of Noodles🍜, starting with Japanese Udon Noodles🍜.  Although pasta is generally associated with Italians, actually the Chinese got there first, and pasta probably made it to Italy as a result of the adventures of Marco Polo around the 13th Century.  Our guest expert today does a fine job with this history of Udon noodles🍜 which are more Japanese than Chinese nowadays, but the Chinese probably invented these also.

For myself today, my Noodles were a package of Oriental Flavored Ramen Noodles🍜.  20 cents a package, you can't beat that on a SNAP Card budget!
