In other words, when I contemplate the luxury versus necessity question, I don't just take my own needs and wants into consideration in thinking about any given good or service. I take all of life, all beings, all species, all people... into the equation.  Over all time, deep into the distant future.  It clarifies to do so, and makes it much easier to decide whether I really "need" something.
My "avatar" graphic is Japanese calligraphy (shodō) forming the word shoshin, meaning "beginner's mind". --  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoshin -- It is with shoshin that I am now and always "meeting my breath" for the first time. Try it!
