More now he talks about Minnesota.

Response to electric scooter companies

Article modified on July 9, 2020 - written by XR Lyon

Recall of facts
On June 17, about fifteen of our activists (Extinction Rebellion Lyon) neutralized 360 self-service ( free-floating ) electric scooters from the 4 brands present in Lyon: Bird, Dott, Lime and Voi (Blablacar).

Dott and Voi responded to this action by denouncing an act of vandalism and by offering to receive us. In view of the hypocrisy of these start-ups, we do not wish to engage in dialogue with them, but present our response to their argument below. Once again, their press releases put forward false arguments, such as the alleged replacement of the car by the scooter, as well as fanciful figures in total opposition to those produced by scientific studies. The call for actions of June 17 [1] proposed to denounce and fight against the re-intoxication of the world. The savage liberalism put into action by these start-ups of self-service scooters represents this intoxication.

Through this action, we denounce and fight against the ecological disaster and the social problems caused by electric scooters, despite the communication arguments of these start-ups, which tries to present them as a solution while they do nothing to solve the problems. On the contrary.
We call for the immediate withdrawal of self-service scooters, and will continue to fight against them until this withdrawal is effective.
Intoxication: Scooters would be ecological and replace cars

The majority of scooter start-ups boast of being green, having a perfect recycling program, and offering a mode of transport that replaces the car. You, (Dott and Voi, who have communicated for the moment on our action), do not differentiate yourself in any way from other current players in the micro-mobility sector.

Less than two years ago, you introduced free-floating electric scooters into public space claiming that they were a solution (or even the solution) to the ecological problem of current travel. However, as we will see, this is false. Indeed, several scientific articles (see [2] and [3] ) have shown that free-floating scooters are far from being as ecological as you try to make them believe. In practice, you are artificially responding to a so-called need that you yourselves have created and that you are in a hurry to cash out.

The problem you claim to solve is what you call the last mile problem, which arose exactly at the time of the emergence of start-ups of your kind: those of free-floating bikes [4] . Before that, this last mile problem was only used in freight transport logistics. How ironic ...

No, the scooter does not replace the car. Studies have also been carried out, and the finding is clear: they mostly replace walking (43%), public transport (38%) and cycling (15%).

You also highlight an excellent carbon footprint. But then again, studies show that you are far from the truth. On the other hand, the introduction of these scooters brought with them many new problems, from the point of view of public space, intrusion into privacy, and other effects that are for the moment difficult to quantify, such as morbidity due to reduced walking and cycling.

All that seems to matter to you is being able to raise funds and be bankable. You have no objective discourse on the negative, ecological and societal impacts of your business.

Your advertisements and press releases talking about ecology seem to be written by lawyers, marketers or lobbyists, but not by scientists who want to be as objective as possible.

The CO2 / km figures announced in your press releases in response to our action are very far from those of scientific studies [5] and [6] . Can you cite an article that works for you?

Defining yourself as green and making it your main marketing argument is a sham. By claiming this image far removed from reality, you fully subscribe to the practice of greenwashing .

Your main marketing argument, namely the ecological argument declined in fraudulent names such as sustainable mobility, ecological transport, soft mobility is an exemplary case. In view of the climate emergency, this deception is criminal.

In the face of these criticisms, you may be tempted to advance this hackneyed argument: it was only your beginnings, you have improved, you intend to improve further. It would be to admit that you did not bring a solution, but a new problem… You could also claim that the ecological impact will be positive in a few years.

That would be to admit that your business is based only on a new, and umpteenth, ecological mortgage. Far too dangerous because your societies are not viable, are or will for the most part close, leaving a catastrophic overall ecological balance. The recent close example is the ecological fiasco of free-floating bikes [7] . How do you claim to do better than them?

The subject of ecology is too important to leave it to startupers and wild liberalism.

into Google translate to see it all.

This is notable.  If true why worry about scooters as they will all be dead in 10 years.   :cwmddd:

Regarding the recycling of batteries, at the current speed, all lithium resources could be exhausted within 10 years!

Are you concerned about how the many necessary minerals (metals and rare metals) are mined? By who ? In what conditions ? Would you go and extract it yourself?

Conclusion

As a consequence of the multiple negative impacts of the electric scooter deployed by private companies in our cities, we ask for its immediate withdrawal. The construction of an eco-responsible world is not compatible with the production of useless, obsolete objects, and poorly adapted to the conviviality of the public space.
The rationale behind this deployment is an economic rationale that aims to individualize trips and make them pay, which goes against the environmental and social issues that we are currently facing.

This story doesn't piss me offf, because it's ludicrous.

OF COURSE scooters don't "replace" carz.  They don't have the speed, range or carrying capacity.

They can however substitute for carz often used for unnecessary trips, like going to the convenience store for a quart of milk.  They can be used  in conjunction with public transportation for work commuting..

They ARE more "eco-friendly" simply because they use so much less energy.  My scooters use <1hp.  A typical car uses 150hp.  Big SUVS double that.

The scooter companies here, which were going great guns (and doing environmental damage already) all went tits up because COVID.
My best to you too K-dog.
