Be careful opening cat food cans...

I just want to remind people to be very careful when opening canned food. On June 13th I was opening a can of cat food with a pop-top lid and the top came off very quickly and I sliced my right hand pretty badly. I went to the ER and got 5 stitches and I thought that was that...except it got badly infected 5 days later and I ended up spending 2 nights in the hospital getting IV antibiotics. It has healed up pretty well but I still can't feel anything due to nerve damage on part of my index finger. So be careful! Don't learn the hard way like I did. I am still feeding my kitties canned food, but I always the cans slowly and carefully now.

When I was feeding the ferals, they gave me those pouches to feed them. It squirted all over me... so gross. I was covered in salmon, tuna, red snapper slime!!

But totally understandable, I cut my index finger very badly on a flip-top cat food can lid. I did it after I'd already thrown it into the garbage, I did the same as the previous poster, and was pushing the garbage down. I reached in and sliced my forefinger right along the edge. I had to go to a walk-in clinic, and they "glued" mine shut, too. That was last year. To this day I still cannot bend my finger without pain, and it's very stiff---I eventually went back to my regular Dr., and she said I had nerve damage. My finger might never heal properly. To the OP, I hope you have a better outcome. My teenage dd used to have the daily chore of feeding the cats---I had never known how sharp those lids were! She said she was always scared of those lids, and I'm grateful she never cut herself. Had I known how dangerous it was I never would have given her that chore.

A nerve was severed, I still have numbness on the tip of the middle finger of my right hand from slicing it on a cat food can--and it wasn't even my kitty, it was a friend's cat. (Never told my friend, she was so sensitive she would have died of the mortification.)

I know how sharp can lids are and every time I open one, I am careful, thinking of the time I was cut. I hope you heal! Thank you for posting this so others can be warned!
