Quick call Fox. We'll go with it on the 6 o'clock news.

This is GOP Talking Point Number One, repeated so incessantly and so ubiquitously that it has reached the point of reflex: Both Sides Do It.

Everyone is equally partisan.

Equally to blame.

Equally unreasonable.

Everybody knows that…except for some mysterious reason no one can lay hands on a single metric that shows this to be true.

It's been this way since the days of St. Reagan, and the soulless cabal of Atwater, Stone and Manafort leapt from transforming the Young Republicans to kidnapping the big kahuna, the Republican party and turned American politics into the cash-greased shitpit it is today.

Good article here: https://medium.com/the-atlantic/the-plot-against-america-703c5cfcb367

[Interesting sidebar: Remember the stories about how Manafort had been dodging Oleg Deripaska, because the Russian oligarch wanted to know what had become of his money? For a slippery character, Manafort has always had very sticky fingers. Old timers may recall that ferdinand marcos donated $10M to dutch's campaign. Surprised the boodle never made it? From the article:

Quote
Stories about Manafort’s slipperiness have acquired mythic status. In the summer of 2016, Politico’s Kenneth Vogel, now with The New York Times, wrote a rigorous exegesis of a long-standing rumor: Manafort was said to have walked away with $10 million in cash from Ferdinand Marcos, money he promised he would deliver to Ronald Reagan’s reelection campaign (which itself would have been illegal). Vogel relied in part on the 1996 memoir of Ed Rollins, a Republican consultant and Reagan’s reelection-campaign director. In the book, Rollins recounted a dinner-party conversation with a member of the Filipino congress who claimed to have personally given a suitcase of cash to a “well-known Washington power lobbyist” involved in the Marcos campaign. Rollins would neither confirm nor deny that the lobbyist was Manafort, though his description doesn’t leave much uncertainty, and he conceded in an email that “it’s a pretty good guess.” Rollins admits in his book to being “stunned” by what he heard — “not in a state of total disbelief, though, because I knew the lobbyist well and I had no doubt the money was now in some offshore bank.” This irked Rollins greatly: “I ran the [Reagan] campaign for $75,000 a year, and this guy got $10 million in cash.”

The GOP can now force the bar to be lowered and the ire to be raised uniformly and robotically for everyone every time they and only they are caught naked, fisting the Easter Bunny.

Since elected republicans are accountable to nothing, not their hand-chosen voters or to any sense of public decency, now we are faced with the fact that millions of our fellow citizens are either hateful morons or clinically insane and that they are almost all packed into the same political Party.

A Party/Media/Corporate Empire which now survives solely by keeping its base ignorant, frightened and berserk with rage.

We dwell in two, distinct Americas now --  one that is certainly flawed and squabbling and timorous, and the other America – the Red/Fox America -- is so existentially monstrous that it is now inimical to every value we claim to cherish. It is now the Party of Trump, whos is, in turn, the logical extension of every calamity the Rs have endorsed over the last 40 years

And so with the eager help of Hate Radio, Fox News and the Mainstream Media, they invent a bedtime story to help them hide the ugly truth. An opium dream that is now faithfully parroted by every Broder and Brooks and Friedman and Neal Conan in the land. This lie that no matter how low the GOP sinks, somehow, some way the Democrats are equally and oppositely terrible.

Equally steeped in sin and intolerance.

Equally to blame for every bad thing...

Which is nonsense. KNow that when someone breaks into a chorus of "Both Sids" or "What About...", lifeboats are being prepared so that conservatives can float away from the destruction they have caused and declare themselves, "independents," and attempt to foist some version of the "no Labels" scam on the unsuspecting.
