The Curse of the Ship of Gold
« Reply #2521 on: June 14, 2019, 08:35:39 AM »

In November 2018, a 66-year-old man named Tommy Thompson was wheeled into Judge Laurel Beatty Blunt’s courtroom in Columbus, Ohio, clad in a dark blue suit and looking like he had just served four years in federal prison. Thompson’s hair, once thick black curls, had given way to a bald pate, and with a long white beard and piercing eyes, he looked like a slightly hairier Christopher Lee, the actor who played the wizard Saruman in The Lord of the Rings.

Throughout the trial, Judge Blunt interrupted Thompson’s testimony to reprimand him for veering wildly off course. Thompson had long insisted that he suffers from neurological problems and chronic fatigue syndrome, which impairs his memory, and that his meandering explanations were a symptom of the distress foisted upon him.

But Judge Blunt, like other officials who’d presided over civil and criminal cases against Thompson, claimed that his malingering was the maneuvering of a hyper-intelligent con man. Indeed, Thompson’s legs were shackled as he sat through his trial. As everyone knew, he’d already fled from authorities once.

Thompson was genuinely sickened and overwhelmed, however, and he found it extremely frustrating that nobody seemed to take his condition seriously. He’d been living a hectic life for almost 30 years, and he tried to make the jury understand the unique stress that had put him in such a weak state. His problems had all begun when he’d discovered one of the largest caches of gold in human history, a lost treasure at the bottom of the sea. In the 30 years since, the weight of the find had upended partnerships, ended his marriage, and set loose the specter of greed. What began as a valiant mission of science turned into something else entirely.

The golden asteroid that could make everyone on Earth a billionaire
« Reply #2522 on: June 29, 2019, 02:16:53 PM »

Whether it was the Big Bang, Midas or God himself, we don’t really need to unlock the mystery of the origins of gold when we’ve already identified an asteroid worth $700 quintillion in precious heavy metals.

If anything launches this metals mining space race, it will be this asteroid–Psyche 16, taking up residence between Mars and Jupiter and carrying around enough heavy metals to net every single person on the planet close to a trillion dollars.

The massive quantities of gold, iron and nickel contained in this asteroid are mind-blowing. The discovery has been made. Now, it’s a question of proving it up.

NASA plans to do just that, beginning in 2022.

The cost of gold futures on the Comex exchange increased by 1.17%, reaching $1,501.6 per ounce, according to trading data. Its the first time that gold has trade above $1,500 per ounce since April 2013.

The rise in gold prices continues against the backdrop of a developing trade war between the United States and China. More and more investors are choosing to place their money in defensive assets, resulting in a ‘flight to quality’ and rising precious metal prices.

As a result, in recent days, December futures for gold have been selling for $ 1,503.3 per ounce.

In January 2019, the US had the largest gold reserves in the world with 8,133 tons while Russia was in fifth place with 2,066 tons, according to the World Gold Council.

Under extreme conditions, gold rearranges its atoms and forms a previously unknown structure. And when the pressures were pushed to the equivalent of those at the center of the Earth, the gold got even weirder.

The finding comes from a new study in which researchers from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the Carnegie Institution for Science practiced their 21st-century alchemy at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. Using a high-energy laser, they heated gold to extreme temperatures and compressed it to pressures as high as those found at the center of the Earth.

More specifically, they put a little piece of plastic in front of a chunk of gold and then shot a high-energy laser through the plastic, which “basically causes an explosion that sends plastic one way and shock waves in the opposite direction,” said lead author Richard Briggs, a postdoctoral scientist at LLNL. [The 8 Biggest Mysteries About Earth]

Those shock waves hit the gold and caused it to compress and heat up extremely quickly, within nanoseconds. They then hit the gold with X-rays and detected where the x-rays bounced off in order to figure out its structure. This is “the first time that we’ve ever been able to reach such high-pressure and high-temperature conditions and look at them at the same time using X-rays,” Briggs told Live Science. What they saw was “certainly a surprise.”

Gold usually forms a crystalline structure that materials scientists call face-centered cubic (fcc). Imagine a cube like a die. Atoms would sit on each corner and each face, Briggs said. But most experiments conducted on gold have involved compressing it slowly and at room temperature, he added.

Because it so loyally forms this face-centered cubic structure, gold has been used as a kind of “standard” in high-pressure experiments to calculate pressure, Briggs said. But when Briggs and his team rapidly compressed the gold at high temperatures, it formed what’s called the body-centered cubic (bcc) structure. This more-open structure packs atoms into a space in a less-efficient way, which means the gold doesn’t prefer to be in this form, he said. If you were to imagine the die again, it would be as if atoms sat on each corner, with just one atom in the middle.

The finding that gold can form this new structure may change the way scientists use the element as a standard in high-pressure experiments, Briggs said.

The team found that the structure of gold began to change from fcc to bcc at around 220 gigapascals (GPa), which is 2.2 million times our planet’s atmospheric pressure, the researchers said in a statement. What’s more, when the researchers compressed the gold beyond 250 GPa to pressures equivalent to that found at the center of the Earth (around 330 GPa), it melted.

The findings were published July 24 in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Wisconsin Bill Would Remove Barrier to Using Gold, Silver and Crypto as Money

MADISON, Wisc. (Aug. 8, 2019) – A bill introduced in the Wisconsin Assembly would take an important step toward treating gold, silver and cryptocurrency as money instead of a commodity.

Rep. Shae Sortwell (R-Two Rivers) introduced Assembly Bill 200 (AB200) on May 8. The legislation would exempt the sale, use, or other consumption of precious metals from the state’s sales and use tax. It would also exempt the sale of cryptocurrency.

An amendment to the bill submitted by the sponsor on July 17 would define  “precious metal bullion” as “coins, bars, rounds, or sheets that contain gold, silver, copper, platinum, or palladium and that are marked with weight, purity, and content or for which the government issuer has certified the weight, purity, and content.”

Passage of AB200 would eliminate a significant barrier to using gold, silver and cryptocurrencies in everyday transactions, a foundational step for people to undermine the Federal Reserve’s monopoly on money.

Scientists have unlocked the power of gold atoms but is this technology new or ancient?

by Corbin Black

For those who follow the stories of the ancient Sumerian tablets first discovered in the 1800s, you know that gold is central to the story. The Anunnaki, extraterrestrials from another planet, mined for precious gold in southern Africa when they arrived on Earth. The element has unique qualities that make it invaluable for many reasons; from jewelry to electrical components, to insulation used in space travel. Today, scientists have made a big leap in unlocking the potential of 2D gold, thousands of years later.

Now, researchers from the University of Leeds in the U.K. have created the world’s “thinnest gold” only two atoms in thickness. It’s so thin; they consider it 2-dimensional. They say it’s a “landmark achievement” in nanomaterials with potential in the medical and electronics industries.
