Re: The Collapstead IC- $198 for a new car battery - I doubt my solution
« Reply #15 on: July 11, 2020, 09:37:33 AM »
4 days ago I parked my car and went inside. The next day it would not even turn over.
It is a 1997 Toyota Corolla with  180,000 miles. We bought it for $5 from a relative about 5 years ago. I really have liked this car. "Auto experts and owners alike peg the vehicle’s life expectancy between 200,000 and 300,000 miles. " :) It is also very quick up to 50 mph. I love the cruise control!!!
For 30 years the community has chosen to buy very inexpensive cars, but look for the "good" ones. In the 80's it was about $1200, in the 90's it was $2000, in the 2000's it was $2800, didn't have buy one after that, yet....and I don't even want to know how much one is now. My Toyota will not die before me.
So I jump start it with our truck and then drove it for about 6 miles on the highway. Park it, shut off the engine, and it starts right back up. So I get up to go inside about 5 minutes later and I had this weird feeling that the battery was already going dead, so I went to restart it and sure enough it just started the clicking sound and that faded away. We had to take it to town to a mechanic to find out what caused it to go out so suddenly. I didn't want to replace the battery and then have it draining all the time because the generator is going bad  or there is a short some where. We chose to take it the most expensive mechanics in Columbia. They rule the business. I could have taken to a number of less experienced and cheaper mechanics, but this place you have the cream of the crop. It is weird that I like dealing with them. Maybe it is like a penis envy thing. Ha! Maybe it is taking a junked up car to where they take Cadillacs. ( In the 80's I would drive up to the Playboy Casino in Atlantic City in a 1967 VW Bug (Music gig there for a month ). I had made an accelerator pedal out of wood because I had a small accident and slammed my foot through floor board when I ran of the road on the ice and went into a ditch. I repaired the bottom and made the pedal...good enough. I was dressed in white tuxedo and when the Valet approached he looked very strange at me and was shocked when he got in! devil  Somehow I liked doing that...(I guess it is ironic in some fashion. ) They charged me $198 for a new battery and fixing my brake lights ( A rubber "stopper" had come off, they couldn't find one, so they engineered a way to do the job.) Geniuses!!
I will never take another car to them.

I will never take another car to them.

If you haven't bought one lately, the price of car batteries has more than doubled in the past 20 yrs. A 400ah for small car with 3 yr warranty would be minimum 120$

Yeah. It ain't 1995 anymore. They run 120-170 for a 400 mah around here.
But they also fixed your lights? Maybe you got off OK?

Just asking.

Well, I am so bad at financial stuff, and rarely think about $....which leads to lots of ill advised expenditures, but if the $ deal is more than $300 I start being careful. My checking account is staying pretty even since I got SS. I think I will go somewhere else because I want to support the mechanics that are having a hard time, rather than the "masters". :)

I would say battery plus 1 hour minimum plus shop fee... 200 is about right. Probably a minor electrical fault draining power. Pain to diagnose...
If its important then try something, fail, disect, learn from it, try again, and again and again until it kills you or you succeed.

I think you all are realistic about the cost. I realized that it probably WAS that tail light rubber piece that broke off, that kept my brake lights on, that drained/killed the old battery.  Actually, as you pointed out...I got off really good with this...and the guys might be really fair especially during COVID so they can keep in business. Thanks for your thoughts on this!

Re: The Collapstead Intentional Community - Computer Collapse

My computer literally HALTS and then does a hard reboot, for no detectable reason. I would say I am medium/high knowledge amateur from fixing a bunch of computers since 1987. But these newer (2010 model Hp desktop is new to me, it has Windows 7) So I have come to accept it because it started 3 weeks ago, and now it part of my daily life. I am totally cruising the web through trains of thought about something and blank "Hal 2000" dies. So I take a needed break...get up... maybe do some chores. Just come back when "Hal 2000" is ready to go. Come back with some new ideas, and this factory new printer we just added throws up this really cool picture of our dog "Snowball"...(I call her "White Wolf"...she visits from the 14 acres of deep dark Missouri jungle on the other side.) Emoji So I was interrupted again by connections I have with White Wolf. So I uninstalled all the crap HP put on this thing except the drivers and tools. I bet I freed up a lot disk space and a lot of irrelevant processing. Death and hardship is what capitalism rides on. Privilege/Money AMOUNT...and it always corrupts especially neglecting the human needs of the have-not's and people of a different color.
Collapse seems to insist that we find different ways of meeting our needs and goals. It seems like every facet of life is being rerouted and I don't think it is just a detour, cause we never gettin' back on that yellow brick ride to death.?
