Re: Changing the Constitution to Keep Power, Putin Follows Xi
« Reply #15105 on: January 26, 2020, 06:57:53 AM »
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and China’s President Xi Jinping are two of the most powerful rulers in the world.

Now, both have moved to extend their hold on power.

Last week, Putin announced major constitutional changes that, experts say, will extend his control beyond the end of his term in 2024.

Many note the similarity of the move to what Xi did in 2018. That year, Xi had China’s constitution changed to remove term limits on the Chinese head of state.

After Fat Orange wins in a Putin provided landslide, look for a movement to repeal the 22nd Amendment. Write it in ink.

There are enough others on the Republican side who will now come out of the closet and contnue down his path of last-ditch resource stripping and climate denial and gerrymandering......in twenty years they will be deifying Trump's memory like they do Reagan's now.

St. Donald.

Dulles Airport will be renamed for Trump in a triumph over the Deep State.

Ironically, the Trumpites won't get that joke, since most Trump voters don't know the Dulles brothers from the Three Stooges.

Re: Greek police report seizure of nearly 1.2 tons of cocaine

Greek police say they seized nearly 1.2 tons of cocaine and arrested 8 alleged members of an international drug trafficking gang

ATHENS, Greece -- Greek police say they seized nearly 1.2 tons of cocaine and arrested 8 alleged members of an international drug trafficking gang.

Almost all of the cocaine, 1.18 tons, was found during a Friday afternoon raid at a house in the western Greek port of Astakos, police spokesman Theodoros Chronopoulos said Saturday.

The drugs were carefully packaged in 1,040 nylon bags, ready to be distributed to intermediaries, Chronopoulos said.

Four more home raids in the Athens area yielded a small amount of cocaine, some cannabis, an AK-47 assault rifle and three pistols. Police also seized over 233,000 euros ($257,000) in cash and impounded five vehicles.

Major General Petros Tzeferis, head of the Attica Security Directorate, said the cocaine came from the Caribbean and was destined to countries in Europe and northwest Africa.

Tzeferis said the investigation took six months and Greek police were aided by colleagues in Albania and Spain, as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration office at the U.S. Embassy in Athens.

Chronopoulos said the drug gang's leaders were two permanent residents of Spain, with several Albanian citizens as underlings. Police were looking for nine alleged members not yet under arrest.

Two of the people already detained were guarding the stash at the house in Astakos, Chronopoulos said. Three other suspects who allegedly rented a van to pick up the packaged cocaine also were arrested.

Tzeferis said that some of those arrested were already known to police. Four had prior arrests; one had been arrested five times, for armed robbery, attempted murder and drug offenses.

Tzeferis added that the gang's estimated earnings from drug dealing “exceed 50 million euros” ($55 million).

World’s consumption of materials hits record 100bn tonnes a year
« Reply #15109 on: January 26, 2020, 03:41:59 PM »
Unsustainable use of resources is wrecking the planet but recycling is falling, report finds

Half of the 100.6bn tonnes of materials were sand, clay, gravel and cement for building, plus minerals quarried for fertiliser.

The amount of material consumed by humanity has passed 100bn tonnes every year, a report has revealed, but the proportion being recycled is falling.

The climate and wildlife emergencies are driven by the unsustainable extraction of fossil fuels, metals, building materials and trees. The report’s authors warn that treating the world’s resources as limitless is leading towards global disaster.

The materials used by the global economy have quadrupled since 1970, far faster than the population, which has doubled. In the last two years, consumption has jumped by more than 8% but the reuse of resources has fallen from 9.1% to 8.6%.

The report, by the Circle Economy thinktank, was launched at the World Economic Forum in Davos. It shows that, on average, every person on Earth uses more than 13 tonnes of materials per year. But the report also found that some nations are making steps towards circular economies in which renewable energy underpins systems where waste and pollution are reduced to zero.

“We risk global disaster if we continue to treat the world’s resources as if they are limitless,” said Harald Friedl, the chief executive of Circle Economy. “Governments must urgently adopt circular economy solutions if we want to achieve a high quality of life for close to 10bn people by mid-century without destabilising critical planetary processes.”

Marc de Wit, the report’s lead author, said: “We are still fuelling our growth in population and affluence by the extraction of virgin materials. We can’t do this indefinitely – our hunger for virgin material needs to be halted.”

The report found that 100.6bn tonnes of materials were consumed in 2017, the latest year for which data is available. Half of the total is sand, clay, gravel and cement used for building, along with the other minerals quarried to produce fertiliser. Coal, oil and gas make up 15% and metal ores 10%. The final quarter are the plants and trees used for food and fuel.

The lion’s share of the materials – 40% – is turned into housing. Other major categories include food, transport, healthcare, communications, and consumer goods such as clothes and furniture.

Almost a third of the annual materials remain in use after a year, such as buildings and vehicles. But 15% is emitted into the atmosphere as climate-heating gases and nearly a quarter is discarded into the environment, such as plastic in waterways and oceans. A third of the materials is treated as waste, mostly going to landfill and mining spoil heaps. Just 8.6% is recycled.

“This report sparks an alarm for all governments,” said Carolina Schmidt, Chile’s environment minister. “We need to deploy all the policies to really catalyse this transformation [to a circular economy].”

Cristianne Close of the conservation group WWF said: “The circular economy provides a framework for reducing our impacts, protecting ecosystems and living within the means of one planet.”

The report said increasing recycling can make economies more competitive, improve living conditions and help to meet emissions targets and avoid deforestation. It reported that 13 European countries have adopted circular economy roadmaps, including France, Germany and Spain, and that Colombia became the first Latin American country to launch a similar policy in 2019.

China’s ban on waste imports aims to encourage domestic recycling, the report said, but has also stimulated the development of circular economy strategies in Australia and other countries which previously exported their waste to China.

Janez Potočnik, a former European environment commissioner and the co-chair of the UN Environment Programme international resource panel, said the world needed to learn to do more with less and replace ownership with sharing, as is increasingly being seen with cars.

Vanessa Nakate: Climate activist hits out at 'racist' photo crop
« Reply #15111 on: January 26, 2020, 03:49:12 PM »

Vanessa Nakate is a leading climate activist

Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate has accused the media of racism after she was cropped out of a photograph taken with her white peers in Davos.

In an emotional video statement, Ms Nakate said that for the first time in her life she "understood the definition of the word racism".

Ms Nakate said "various" outlets, including the US' AP news agency, had removed her from photos.

AP, which has since removed the cropped photo, said there was "no ill intent".

"The photographer was trying to get a picture out fast under tight deadline and cropped it purely on composition grounds because he thought the building in the background was distracting," the news agency's director of photography, David Ake, said.

"When we went back to add more pictures to the report, which we almost always do when we are working under very tight deadlines, we added additional pictures with different crops."

How did we get here?
Ms Nakate gave a news conference in Davos on Friday alongside fellow climate activists Greta Thunberg, Loukina Tille, Luisa Neubauer and Isabelle Axelsson.

She later shared an article by AP in which she was cropped out of a picture of the activists.

In a video statement posted on Twitter, she accused the media of racism.

"We don't deserve this. Africa is the least emitter of carbons, but we are the most affected by the climate crisis...You erasing our voices won't change anything. You erasing our stories won't change anything," she said.

"I don't feel ok right now. The world is so cruel."

The 23 year old said she had not received "any explanation or apology" after the AP image was replaced with one that included her.

The video has been watched about 40,000 times and been shared by hundreds of people.

Some Twitter users also noted that other media outlets had misidentified Ms Nakate as Zambian activist Natasha Mwansa.

Leading climate activists offered their support.

"I'm so sorry they did this to you... you are the last one who would deserve that! We are all so grateful for what you are doing and we all send love and support", Ms Thunberg wrote.

Ms Axelsson said it was "unacceptable" to crop the activist out of photos.

"Her voice is just as, if not more, valuable than ours in a place like this", she wrote.

Kerala Forms 620 Km Human Chain Against CAA, NRC On Republic Day
« Reply #15112 on: January 26, 2020, 03:54:27 PM »
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said the people of the state have shown that the CAA, NRC and NPR will not be implemented there.

A 620-km-long human chain from the northern part of Kerala to the south.

As the Republic Day parade winded down in Delhi, between 60-70 lakh people on Sunday came together to form a human chain in Kerala as a mark of protest and solidarity.

The 620-km chain, which was fully formed by early Sunday evening, was the latest dramatic episode in the state’s struggle against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and mooted National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Organised by the ruling LDF, the chain – one of the biggest such gatherings in the state’s history – extended from the town square in northern Kasaragod to the border town of Kaliyakkavilai in the south.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran helped form the section at the Martyrs’ column in Thiruvananthapuram while CPI(M) Politburo members S. Ramachandran Pillai and M.A. Baby formed its first and final links respectively.

Closed fists were raised in salute as an oath was taken to safeguard the Constitution against “attempts to subvert and destroy it”. The Preamble was read out as well. Some 40,000 public meetings were held ahead of a dress rehearsal and after the chain broke around 5 pm.

Speaking at the event, Vijayan said, “The human chain against the CAA represents a wall to hold back threats to the secular fabric and communal harmony of the country. All of Kerala has stated here today that the CAA, NRC and NPR will not be implemented here. That will was seen by the overwhelming participation by the people today.”

A host of senior state ministers, including three of the most outspoken critics of the CAA-NRC— Finance Minister Dr Thomas Isaac, Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran and Law minister A.K. Balan—participated in the event.

A number of eminent personalities, including celebrities, also took part in the event.

“The chain has spoken louder than any Republic Day parade tableau could. Kerala’s voice won’t be silenced by fascists,” said U. Nandakishore, one of the thousands of party workers mobilised to ensure safety and coordinate at the local level.

A sizeable police contingent was deployed along the chain for maintenance of law and order.

The scale of public participation at the event was reminiscent of the unprecedented roughly 50 lakh turnout at the ‘Vanitha Manthil’ or ‘Women’s Wall’ formed against the backdrop of violence in the Sabarimala flare-up last January.

Terror police list that included Extinction Rebellion was shared across government
« Reply #15113 on: January 27, 2020, 09:14:09 AM »
Document was sent to several departments, NHS England, Ofsted and 20 councils

Controversial guidance that listed Extinction Rebellion as an extremist ideology was sent to a wide range of government departments and local authorities including the Home Office and Counter Terrorism Policing headquarters, the Guardian can reveal.

The south-east division of Counter Terrorism Policing was forced to recall the document, which listed the climate crisis group alongside neo-Nazis and jihadists, after it was exposed by the Guardian.

After the Guardian revealed the document’s existence Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) branded it an “error of judgment” and said it “was produced at a local level”.

But now, after an internal review, the unit has confirmed the guide was sent to the Home Office, the Department for Education, NHS England, the Ministry of Defence, HM Prison Service, Probation Service and Ofsted, as well as 20 local authorities, five police forces and Counter Terrorism Policing headquarters (CTPHQ) in London.

The guide placed Extinction Rebellion alongside neo-Nazi groups and jihadists and encouraged public sector workers to report any individuals with links to them to Prevent, the controversial anti-radicalisation programme.

The distribution list shows a wide range of organisations across the country were in receipt of it for more than a month before it was recalled and prompted questions over the lack of action taken by CTPHQ, the Home Office and others to flag its contents.

Yvette Cooper, the Labour MP and chair of the home affairs select committee in the last parliament, said: “The Home Office should explain what action they took when they received the CTPSE guidance and also whether they have yet asked other regional counter-terror units to review and share with the Home Office their counter-terror guidance to make sure they aren’t getting it wrong in the same way.

“The Home Office should show some leadership and responsibility on this. It isn’t about an individual investigation, where operational independence is crucial.

“Instead it involves the broader shared responsibility between the Home Office, the police and other agencies on how extremism should be defined, what the scope of counter-terror work should be and maintaining public confidence in the crucially important counter-terror work the police do.”

The document was also sent to unitary authorities and county councils in Milton Keynes, Slough, Bracknell Forest, Reading, Wokingham, West Berkshire, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Southampton, Portsmouth, the Isle Of Wight, Brighton and Hove, Medway, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Surrey, Hampshire, East Sussex, West Sussex and Kent.

Police forces for the Thames Valley, Hampshire, Sussex, Surrey and Kent also received the document.

A spokesperson for CTPHQ said: “CTPHQ was included in the wider email distribution list for this document. It was not sent for our review or approval, nor was it forwarded on by the individual that received it to others. As CTPSE has made clear, the document has now been recalled.”

The document was made available internally to NHS England staff but was not used for any specific briefings or training sessions.

It is understood staff working in counter-extremism in the Department for Education received the guide but it was not forwarded outside the department.

Likewise the Home Office did not forward it outside the department. The department did not request the guide, and it was not reviewed, commented on or cleared by the Home Office.

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion said: “We need to find out who knew what and when. But more importantly, we need to know why. Why are they trying to silence a peaceful, non-violent movement of people who are trying to make sure the world’s children have a future?”

Last week, the security minister, Brandon Lewis, failed to say when the Home Office had seen the document when an urgent question was granted on the Home Office’s oversight of the police in their operation of the Prevent programme.

When asked by Cooper when the Home Office saw the guidance, Lewis replied: “As I say, the police have withdrawn the document and are reviewing it.

“I fully respect, and the government respect, the independence of the police, and those guidance documents are part of their independence.

“The police produce those documents for their officers in the work that they do, and it is right that we respect that.

“The home secretary and I meet representatives and the leadership of counter-terrorism police and other partners on a weekly basis. We will raise this issue with them, to ensure that they are focused on the importance of getting this right.

“Those documents are about alerting their officers to all the types of groups and symbols that they may deal with in their day-to-day work. We need to acknowledge the regret that the police have shown over this error of judgment, and the fact that they are reviewing the document.”

After the document surfaced, the Guardian was approached by teachers and council workers across the country who had received Prevent training that referenced Extinction Rebellion.

A separate counter-terrorism document, a guide to symbols and logos, featured Greenpeace, Peta and other non-violent groups alongside National Action, Combat 18 and swastikas. It had been listed by schools, NHS Trusts and safeguarding boards as a Prevent resource material. A number of groups have threatened legal action.

City of London police labelled Extinction Rebellion one of its “key threats” in a counter-terrorism assessment and provided awareness training on the climate crisis group across the capital, resulting in “intelligence” tip-offs.

Police chiefs have insisted they do not consider Extinction Rebellion and other non-violent groups to be extremists or terrorists and the documents were intended to help officers distinguish between groups of interest and others.

Australia Set To Experience Boom Of Deadly Spiders Following Fires, Floods
« Reply #15114 on: January 27, 2020, 06:59:50 PM »

First came the fires, then high waters. Now, one of the planet’s most venomous spiders is making its Australian appearance en masse, say wildlife experts.

“WARNING! FUNNEL-WEB SEASON IS HERE!” writes the Australian Reptile Park.

The “bonanza” of deadly spiders comes after Australia has experienced the worst wildfire season in decades, which is responsible for killing at least 28 people and more than 1 billion animals. Following weeks of devastating bushfires, the southern continent is now seeing extreme weather with golf ball-sized hail, dust storms, flooding, and projected rain across much of the country, which has helped firefighters get a handle on the fires in drought-stricken areas, reports the BBC.

When the climate gets humid after rainstorms, funnel-web spiders leave their burrows to avoid being flushed out. They may also use this rare opportunity to find a mate.

"We are issuing a message of warning to the public as recent wet weather conditions followed by hot days have created perfect conditions for funnel-web spiders to thrive," said the park in a video post on its Facebook page.

http://www.youtube.com/v/tcnYQhPUSvE&fs=1

At least 40 species of funnel web-spider reside in Australia, among the most toxic being Atrax robustus, or the Sydney funnel-web spider. A. robustus has one of the most toxic venoms to humans of any spider, with males being six times more potent.

Measuring between 1.5 centimeters and 3.5 centimeters, the shiny black spiders burrow into sheltered sites and dash out of their dens when potential prey, beetles, cockroaches, small lizards, or snails walk over silken trip-lines the spider has laid outside of its burrow, according to the Australian Museum. When threatened, the arachnid shows aggressive behavior by rearing up and displaying its fangs, but overall the spiders get a bad rep as they tend to stay away from humans. In fact, no one has died from a funnel-web spider bite since the 1980s in large part due to antivenom programs at the Australian Reptile Park.

The park is the nation’s only zoo “committed to saving lives” through its venom milking program, which has been in place for more than 50 years. Every year, the park notes that over 300 lives are saved through its supply of a variety of venoms, which are used for all snake and funnel-web antivenom. The park is the sole supplier of antivenom for the spiders, but naturalists say they need more male funnel-web spiders to bolster their program. If you can capture one safely, do so and bring it in, they add.

When the climate gets humid after rainstorms, funnel-web spiders leave their burrows to avoid being flushed out.

Amazon employees mass-protest its climate policy despite alleged firing threat
« Reply #15115 on: January 27, 2020, 08:23:51 PM »
More than 350 Amazon employees defied the company's corporate communications policy on Sunday, with a Medium post criticizing its contribution to climate change. The move comes weeks after workers alleged that Amazon threatened to fire them for speaking out.

The post from Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, an internal activist group that started in late 2018, includes comments from 357 named workers who slammed its work with the oil and gas industry, collaboration with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and warehouse conditions. The Washington Post, a paper owned by Amazon boss Jeff Bezos, previously reported on the move.

"Every person who shared a statement had to decide for themselves that whatever the consequences, they needed to stand up for what they felt was right," said Victoria Liang, a software development engineer, in a release. "The climate crisis is just that urgent. We just couldn't be silenced by these policies on issues of such moral weight."

Several employees praised the plan to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans, but noted that Bezos' September 2019 pledge to make company carbon neutral by 2040 seems unambitious compared to Microsoft's recent commitment to be carbon negative by 2030.

"Of course we are passionate about these issues. Our 'Positions' page makes this clear and outlines what we're doing about them," an Amazon spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "While all employees are welcome to engage constructively with any of the many teams inside Amazon that work on sustainability and other topics, we do enforce our external communications policy and will not allow employees to publicly disparage or misrepresent the company or the hard work of their colleagues who are developing solutions to these hard problems."

Amazon Employees for Climate Justice is among several movements that have grown within the company. Similar groups have appeared in Microsoft, Google and other major tech companies, indicating an increase in activism within the industry.

Russian intelligence sources have claimed that Michael D’Andrea, head of CIA operations in Iran and who orchestrated the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, was killed in a US spy plane downed yesterday in Ghazni, Afghanistan.

The plane with US Air Force markings reportedly served as the CIA’s mobile command for D’Andrea, who earnt several nicknames including: Ayatollah Mike, the Dark Prince, and the Undertaker. He is one of the most prominent CIA figures in the region, appointed head of the agency’s Iran Mission Centre in 2017. Under his leadership, the agency was perceived to take a more “aggressive stance toward Iran”.

The Taliban claimed to have shot down the plane but have yet to provide evidence, whilst the US has denied the claim but has acknowledged the loss of a Bombardier E-11A plane in central Afghanistan. Graphic images online have already circulated purportedly showing some of the charred remains of those on board.

Afghan authorities initially claimed the plane was a state-owned airline, but this was denied by the company, Ariana. Helicopters have been brought down before by the Taliban, but they are not believed to have the capabilities required to bring down a high-flying aircraft.

It has been speculated that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) may also have a hand in the incident, especially as anti-aircraft support has previously been given to the Taliban. Additionally, the Afghan Shia Fatimyoun Brigades, who are trained by the IRGC, also have a presence in the country.

An exiled Iranian journalist who has written previously for the hard-line Javan daily newspaper suggested the IRGC was involved, tweeting: “The American Gulfstream plane was downed in Afghanistan by the Taliban. They say that intelligence officers were on board. This report has not yet been confirmed, but if it is, it is possible that the issue of Iran will also emerge in this case.”

Another Iranian journalist who writes for Mashregh newspaper, described as having close links to IRGC, tweeted not long after the news broke out: “We will attack them on the same level as they are attacking us.”

Soleimani’s successor as head of the IRGC’s Quds Force, Esmail Qaani, has established ties in Afghanistan going back to the 1980s. Additionally, the chief commander of the IRGC, General Hossein Salami, warned that no American military commanders will be safe if the US administration continues to threaten Iranian commanders.

D’Andrea, who is reportedly a convert to Islam, doing so in order to marry his Muslim wife, who is from a wealthy family from the Mauritius of Gujarati origins, having met on his first overseas assignment in East Africa, one of the senior directors of her family’s company Curumjee Group, has been speculated to provide cover for CIA operations.

He also oversaw hundreds of drone strikes, which according to The New York Times “killed thousands of Islamist militants and hundreds of civilians”. D’andrea is credited with being the mastermind behind the CIA’s notorious “signature strike” used to kill people based on their behaviour, not identity, subsequently used to determine someone’s guilt or likelihood of being a terrorist.

He was central to the post-9/11 interrogation programme and ran the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center. Assassinations and torture were central to his approach. He also oversaw the hunt for Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and was involved in the assassination of Hezbollah member Imad Mughniyah in Damascus, Syria.

New report urges next president and Congress to reinstate the U.S. crude oil export ban, a move that could slash carbon emissions by 181 million tons of CO2-equivalent each year.

A new report released Tuesday by Oil Change International and Greenpeace USA found that reinstating the U.S. crude oil export ban Congress lifted in 2015 would slash global carbon emissions by up to 181 million tons of CO2-equivalent each year—a reduction comparable to shuttering dozens of coal-fired power plants.

Given the significant impact it would have in the fight against the global climate crisis, Oil Change and Greenpeace demanded that the next president and Congress commit to reviving the crude oil export ban as part of a broad and just transition away from fossil fuel production, which the Trump administration has worked to increase.

The next president, the groups note, has the "legal authority to reinstate crude oil export restrictions by declaring a national climate emergency." Sens. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, have both committed to ending crude oil exports if elected.

"Lifting the crude oil export ban has triggered out of control expansion in U.S. oil production, primarily in the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico," Rebecca Concepcion Apostol, U.S. program director at Oil Change, said in a statement. "Expansion in oil production has sparked a crisis of local air and water pollution, and an epidemic of gas flaring and venting that is accelerating climate change in real time."

"Our elected leaders in Washington must do everything they can to limit oil development," said Apostol, "not roll out the red carpet for Big Oil to dig up more of the very oil making our climate crisis worse every day."

In their 18-page report (pdf), the groups detail how U.S. crude oil production and exports exploded in the wake of Congress' decision to lift the decades-old ban—smuggling it into an end-of-year omnibus spending bill—following intensive lobbying from the fossil fuel industry.

"Since December 2015, exports have grown over 750 percent, from roughly 400,000 [barrels per day] in 2015 to 3.4 million bpd in October 2019," the report notes. "This is an all-time monthly high, a record currently being broken every few months."

Juan Mancias, tribal chairman of the Carrizo Comecrudo Nation of Texas, said his state is the "head of the snake" of U.S. crude oil production.

"Without an export ban in place private companies have been in a free for all at the expense of our Sacred Sites and healthy ecosystems," Mancias said in a statement. "By lifting the ban it is much like handing out blankets that are affected with smallpox."

Even if the U.S. commits to significantly reducing carbon emissions, Oil Change and Greenpeace warned that continuing to export crude oil around the world would "undermine domestic emissions reductions" and fuel the global climate crisis.

"Oil executives have made billions peddling a product they knew would lead to climate emergency—and they show no signs of stopping," Greenpeace USA senior climate campaigner John Noël said in a statement. "While all of the best available science says we need to phase out fossil fuel production to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, the oil industry is doubling down on destruction as usual as it looks to expand."

"The next Congress and president must confront this polluting industry head-on by reinstating common-sense policy like the crude oil export ban and pursuing a just transition for workers in the fossil fuel economy," said Noël.

Very interesting. I wonder if this sees much light of day in what passes for the American Free Press. I'm guessing not so much.

Canadian teacher in Wuhan says city 'like something out of a dystopian movie'
« Reply #15119 on: January 28, 2020, 06:41:56 PM »
A Canadian teacher who lives in the Chinese city that is the epicentre of a coronavirus outbreak says he has no plans to leave.

Wayne Duplessis says he and his family are hunkered down in their home just outside of Wuhan's city centre. He, his wife, Emily Tjandra, and their 15-year-old son Wyatt have spent the last two weeks chatting with people online, watching videos, movies, and the news, and listening to music.

Some Canadians in Wuhan have called on the federal government to send a flight to get them out, but Duplessis said in a Skype interview that he doesn't want to spend spend hours in the air with people who could be sick.

Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada's chief medical officer, has said symptoms of the new coronavirus are similar to those of the common flu and it can take up to two weeks for an infected person to start showing signs.

Duplessis is originally from Espanola, Ont., and he teaches at Wuhan Optics Valley Weiming Experimental School. He said he thinks it's best to wait it out in Wuhan "no matter how difficult that is."

His advice is to maintain routine.

"Get up in the morning, make your bed, brush your teeth, make breakfast, so some things are the same way everyday ... follow that routine so there is a structure to your day."

China has confirmed more than 4,500 cases of the new virus, with more than 100 deaths. Most have been in the central city of Wuhan where the outbreak began in December.

Last week, China began drastic containment efforts to limit the spread of the virus, cutting plane, train and bus links to Wuhan, a city of 11 million people.

"Pretty much since they announced the lockdown ... last week it's been ridiculously quiet. Eerily quiet," Duplessis said. "It's been described by various people here like something out of a dystopian movie or something out of 'The Walking Dead."'

Duplessis said when he last visited the grocery store about a week ago, he saw a few people in masks, gloves and some wearing swim goggles.

The epidemic has revived memories of the SARS outbreak that originated in China in 2003 and killed nearly 800 people. Chinese authorities were criticized for reacting slowly and failing to disclose information.

Duplessis, who has lived in Asia since 1996 and was in China during SARS, said the cities weren't locked down then and it didn't seem as immediate.

"We moved around relatively freely. We still gathered together," he said. "There wasn't isolation as there is now."

But credit cards, electronic money and the internet have helped people "effectively still be in contact with everyone," he said.

"That has reduced the isolation or at least the feeling of isolation if not the cabin fever."
