A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Deflation
« on: December 16, 2014, 09:28:03 AM »
Pharmaceutical prices, for formerly cheap generic medications, are shooting through the roof. This article is by Charles Hugh Smith.

Short version, several useful drugs have seen  prices rise by 500 to 8000 percent over the last year. Thank goodness vaseline is still cheap, because consumers are taking it up the ass.

But unfortunately, there are those whose lives are prolonged and made livable by taking medications, like Digoxin. It's up 884% in one year..the fucking generic version. It's pure fucking greed.

And another related phenomenon which CHS didn't mention, but I'm sure you're aware of Uncle B, is the way that certain drugs that we've used for years with no problems suddenly fall out of favor, only to be replaced by a new drug that does the exact same thing, but costs 20 times more.

Phenergan is one. Perfectly good antiemetic drug, prescribed post-op after surgery for forty or fifty years...costs nearly nothing. Then suddenly phenergan is bad, don't use it. Use Zofran instead. Works great too, but it's $15 a pill.

Yeah, the other half IS really needed. Take away all anxiolytics and a lot of people will self-medicate with booze instead. Print Zofran on the side of some nice pens, reps put on a free lunch to promote it, with pictures of beautiful healthy people using it on a desk calendar and most doctors will believe its better.
