The Harder They Come --- TC Boyle

One way to measure how much collapse is becoming part of the national zeitgeist is by how much it's bleeding over into the arts and literature. Besides zombies on TV and in movies, it hasn't been too obvious. But here's a new novel that touches on the edges. I read it on the plane last night.

Here's a purloined review.

Nice review. Did you enjoy the book?

I first encountereed TC Boyle in 1987 in the pages of Harper's Magazine in a short story entitled, "Sorry Fugu." It's about restaurants, food, artists and critics, and it left me weak with laughter. The fact that I was dating a woman who was a food critic at the time only added to the fun. And yes, she enjoyed it, too.

Find it here if you're interested:

I did enjoy it, although it has difficult subject matter. A boomer father with a mentally unbalanced 20 year old son. Son hooks up with a radical libertarian 40 year old girlfriend who doesn't bow down to TPTB. Mayhem ensues.

I had read the one about the commune that bugged out en masse to Alaska (Drop City). Also good.
