Harbin Hot Springs Evacuated Due to Wildfires
« on: September 13, 2015, 04:25:58 PM »
I've been worried about this possibility. Middletown, two miles away, has sustained fire damage, not sure how bad it is.

To bad. Pretty country as well, I was just north of there at Lakeport last summer.

It is as I feared.  Harbin Hot Springs, at least in terms of the structures there built by humans, has been utterly destroyed.

Some of the buildings were at least a hundred years old, and had survived a number of threats in the past. Others, like the Harbin Temple, were unique buildings designed by master craftsmen, and erected with a great deal of love and good intention.

There is/was no other place like Harbin. There was only this one, and it is gone. I am brought to tears. I have considered this place to be a sort of spiritual home away from home for a long time. I hope the community can come back and rebuild, but it won't ever be quite the same, I'm afraid.

The Warm Pool Area, the Heart Pool, and the Lap Pool

The hot spring, for many years a shrine and place of silent meditation

The steps up to the old boarding houses, Walnut, and Azalea.

These pictures are making me cry. I know these spots so well. So much destruction. Just a smoldering ruin now. It's a shame.

No collapse though. Just an unfortunate fire, right?

Bull Fucking Shit. The world is on fire.

The Harbin Temple, built by the great barefoot cob artist Sun Ray Kelley. One of a kind.

What's left of it now.

Sorry, Eddie.  Looks like it used to be a nice little enchanted place.  Very sad.

The world has always been on fire Eddie, somewhere, for someone. Fire is a perfectly normal part of nature, to the point where ecosystems can depend on it for their very life.

Thank you. It was, to me and many thousands of other weirdos and old hippies, a very special place. It has a long, interesting history which has been chronicled in a couple of good books.

And not that little, actually. Thousands and thousands of acres of big trees. Just. Gone. I have been there this time of year many times. People go there for R&R after Burning Man...or did.

Yeah, you're certainly right about that.
