Tesla’s Battery in Australia Is Surpassing Expectations

Tesla’s Battery in Australia Is Surpassing Expectations

January 17, 2018

By Dylan McConnell

It’s just over one month since the Hornsdale Power Reserve was officially opened in South Australia at the Hornsdale wind farm. The excitement surrounding the project has generated acres of media interest, both locally and abroad.

The aspect that has generated the most interest is the battery’s rapid response time in smoothing out several major energy outages that have occurred since it was installed.

Following the early success of the South Australia model, Victoria has also secured an agreement to get its own Tesla battery built near the town of Stawell. Victoria’s government will be tracking the Hornsdale battery’s early performance with interest.

Generation and Consumption

Since there are losses associated with energy storage, it is a net consumer of energy. This is often described in terms of “round trip efficiency,” a measure of the energy out to the energy in. In this case, the round trip efficiency appears to be roughly 80 percent.

The figure below shows the input and output from the battery over the month. As can be seen, on several occasions the battery has generated as much as 100 MW of power, and consumed 70 MW of power. The regular operation of the battery moves between generating 30 MW and consuming 30 MW of power.

Over the full month of December, the Hornsdale power reserve generated 2.42 GWh of energy, and consumed 3.06 GWh.

As can be seen, the generation and consumption pattern is rather “noisy,” and doesn’t really appear to have a pattern at all. This is true even on a daily basis, as can be seen below. This is related to services provided by the battery.

Generation and consumption of the Hornsdale Power Reserve over the month of December 2018. Author provided [data from AEMO]

Frequency Control Ancillary Services

There are eight different Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) markets in the National Electricity Market (NEM). These can be put into two broad categories: contingency services and regulation services.

Contingency Services

Contingency services essentially stabilize the system when something unexpected occurs. These are called credible contingencies. The tripping (isolation from the grid) of large generator is one example.

When such unexpected events occur, supply and demand are no longer balanced, and the frequency of the power system moves away from the normal operating range. This happens on a very short timescale. The contingency services ensure that the system is brought back into balance and that the frequency is returned to normal within five minutes.

In the NEM there are three separate timescales over which these contingency services should be delivered: six seconds, 60 seconds, and five minutes. As the service may have to increase or decrease the frequency, there is thus a total of six contingency markets (three that raise frequency in the timescales above, and three that reduce it).

This is usually done by rapidly increasing or decreasing output from a generator (or battery in this case), or rapidly reducing or increasing load. This response is triggered at the power station by the change in frequency.

To do this, generators (or loads) have some of their capacity “enabled” in the FCAS market. This essentially means that a proportion of its capacity is set aside, and available to respond if the frequency changes. Providers get paid for the amount of megawatts they have enabled in the FCAS market.

This is one of the services that the Hornsdale Power Reserve has been providing. The figure below shows how the Hornsdale Power Reserve responded to one incident on power outage, when one of the units at Loy Yang A tripped on December 14, 2017.

Regulation Services

The regulation services are a bit different. Similar to the contingency services, they help maintain the frequency in the normal operating range. And like contingency, regulation may have to raise or lower the frequency, and as such there are two regulation markets.

However, unlike contingency services, which essentially wait for an unexpected change in frequency, the response is governed by a control signal, sent from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO).

In essence, AEMO controls the throttle, monitors the system frequency, and sends a control signal out at a four-second interval. This control signal alters the output of the generator such that the supply and demand balanced is maintained.

This is one of the main services that the battery has been providing. As can be seen, the output of the battery closely follows the amount of capacity it has enabled in the regulation market.

More Batteries to Come

Not to be outdone by its neighboring state, the Victorian government has also recently secured an agreement for its own Tesla battery. This agreement, in conjunction with a wind farm near the town of Stawell, should see a battery providing similar services in Victoria.

This battery may also provide additional benefits to the grid. The project is located in a part of the transmission network that AEMO has indicated may need augmentation in the future. This project might illustrate the benefits the batteries can provide in strengthening the transmission network.

It’s still early days for the Hornsdale Power Reserve, but it’s clear that it has been busy performing essential services and doing so at impressive speeds. Importantly, it has provided regular frequency control ancillary services — not simply shifting electricity around.

With the costs and need for frequency control service increasing in recent years, the boost to supply through the Hornsdale Power Reserve is good news for consumers, and a timely addition to Australia’s energy market.

Agelbert NOTE:For smoothing electrical energy demand and preventing appliance damaging frequency and voltage fluctuations, no fossil fuel or nuclear power generating plant can EVER match the lightning speed and reliability of a large battery system.

The only thing that comes close, but still takes seconds (causing brief frequency and voltage fluctuations that you don't notice but your electronics certainly do not like), instead of the lightning fast battery response of fractions of a second, is hydroelectric power because valves can quickly force torrents of water through pelton wheels powering electricity generators.

Battery systems are the Renewable Energy smoothing solution to the problem of intermittent solar, wind, tide, hydro, etc. because they provide an added guarantee of uninterrupted clean power that totally eliminates the need for alleged "baseload" coal or nuclear AND natural gas super expensive peaking power plants.

This has been known by the fossil fuelers for at least a half a century. That is why they continue to do everything they can to stop these systems from coming online. We need fossil fuel and nuclear dirty energy sources like  like a dog needs ticks.  >:(

If we survive the present Trumpism dystopic stupidity, I believe all the excess Renewable Energy harvested from facilities that are being built all over the world will eventually be stored, not just in battery systems and dams, but also in potential energy systems (massive cable suspended weights in subterranean structures up to a thousand feet long) that can kinetically power generators by gravity even faster than hydroelectric power.

Many people do not realize that, at present, a great deal of generated energy by fossil fuel and nuclear power is thrown away in what is called "shunting". As you read in the article above, a certain amount of power capacity HAS TO be kept off line so that when a demand spike shows up, the frequency and voltage do not get out of acceptable limits.

All this is because conventional polluting power sources like coal and nuclear are TOO SLOW in the ramp up and ramp down.

Also, those peaking power plants that use natural gas are, though much quicker, still too slow to avoid the huge amounts of shunted energy thown away routinely.

Renewable Energy and battery systems have the potential to reduce shunting to a fraction of what it is today and eventually eliminate this wasteful process altogether. Fossil Fuelers and Nuke Pukes don't like to talk about shunting because, aside from the polluting piggery , Shunting is their horrendously wasteful Achilles Heel.

In the future, I envision large battery systems as mainly a smoothing technology used to coordinate all the Renewable Energy coming in and storing it when there is an excess, while providing millisecond smooth frequency and voltage instant power until the hydroelectric and/or gravity systems come online a second or three later.  The present six seconds, 60 seconds, and five minutes time scales will be relegated to the cave man days of fossil fuel and nuclear polluting energy sources.  ;D

There is no place for slow starting dirty energy generation in this truly practical and sustainable picture involving supplying clean, non-polluting power to human civilization.

The Fossil Fuelers DID THE Clean Energy  Inventions suppressing, Climate Trashing, human health depleting CRIME,   but since they have ALWAYS BEEN liars and conscience free crooks, they are trying to AVOID   DOING THE TIME or     PAYING THE FINE!     Don't let them get away with it! Pass it on!

How Trump's Base Inspired an International Racist Fiasco, Again

Haiti is a victim of bad luck, but mostly, it's a victim of deliberate policy. So was Ireland, once upon a time, when those who fled British oppression and the Potato Blight were the new scourge of these shores.

Most of the immigrants who have come here over the generations were running for their lives from dire circumstances beyond their control. Such is the case today.

With a rank racist in the White House, however, all bets are off. This regime tailors public policy and comment to please a dwindling cadre of white voters who still enthusiastically support Trump's pan-directional hate.

Spiegel / Heindl Energy
German company plans large-scale power storage using massive rock block

Southern German company Heindl Energy proposes to overcome one of the energy transition’s central challenges – how to store renewable electricity on a large scale – with a pumped hydro system that does not require mountains, reports Ralph Diermann for Spiegel Online.

The company wants to use a massive rock piston with a diameter of at least 100 metres, which is lifted hydraulically using electrical pumps powered by renewable energy. Storage experts told the author that the idea is valid in principle, but many technical hurdles will have to be overcome. Heindl Energy, which has received support from a venture capital investor, is currently in negotiations to build a pilot project with a diameter of 20 metres in Saudi Arabia.

About Gravity Storage

Gravity Storage is a concept with which unprecedentedly large quantities of power can be stored for a long time of 6-14 hours, and can be made available again.

The fundamental principle is based on the hydraulic lifting of a large rock mass. Using electrical pumps, as already used today in pumped storage power plants, water is pumped beneath a movable rock piston, thereby lifting the rock mass.

During times of insufficient generation of renewable power, the water which is under high pressure from the rock mass, is routed to a turbine, as in conventional hydroelectric plants, and generates electricity using a generator.

The capacity of energy storage reaches 8 GWh or more  , comparable to large Pumped Hydro Storage.

The rock piston should have a diameter of at least 100 meters in order to be competitive with pumped storage power plants. The real costs will vary for each site. But we calculate with costs of about 200 USD/kWh capacity at a size of 250-meter diameter.

Nomadic home prototype built out of a shipping container (Video)

SNIPPET:

Repurposing shipping containers for human habitation is a bit of a hit-or-miss affair: sometimes it makes sense, and sometimes it doesn't.

Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped designers from trying. Natural mattress company Coco-mat of Greece (previously) teamed up with Greek shipping container architecture startup Cocoon Modules to create this fresh-looking prototype for an earthquake-resistant modular home that features smart, energy-efficient technology.

As the Cocoon Modules design team explains:

Our modules are more than 15% cheaper than the prefabricated construction in Greece and 30% cheaper than the traditional [construction]. They can be built within weeks in designated industrial spaces and can then be transported and placed on site. By using the modularity of the container we create ergonomic spaces of great design that can be expanded as LEGOs do.

Some names have changed but the fascist Supreme Court RATS continue to serve their Fascist God of Hate and Cruelty faithfully.

Supreme Court
blocks redrawing of North Carolina congressional maps

(Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday blocked a lower court’s order for North Carolina to rework its congressional map because Republicans violated the Constitution by drawing electoral districts intended to maximize their party’s chances of winning.

The conservative-majority court granted a bid by Republican legislators in North Carolina to suspend the Jan. 9 order by a federal court panel in Greensboro that gave the Republican-controlled General Assembly until Jan. 24 to come up with a new map for U.S. House of Representatives districts.

Two liberal justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor, objected to the high court’s action.

The Supreme Court’s decision to stay the order reduces the chance that the current district lines will be altered ahead of the November mid-term congressional elections. The court offered no reason for its decision.

The three-judge panel ruled that the Republican-drawn districts violated the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection under the law by intentionally hobbling the electoral strength of non-Republican voters. Two of the three judges also said the plan ran afoul of the Constitution’s First Amendment by discriminating based on political belief and association.

Those judges on Tuesday refused to put the ruling on hold.

North Carolina’s congressional maps were challenged in two lawsuits by more than two dozen Democratic voters, the North Carolina Democratic Party and other groups.

Under current North Carolina congressional boundaries, Republicans won 10 of the 13 House districts in 2016, despite getting just 53 percent of the statewide vote.

The Supreme Court is currently examining two other cases from Wisconsin and Maryland involving claims that electoral districts were manipulated to keep the majority party in power in a manner that violated voters’ constitutional rights. That practice is called partisan gerrymandering.

In the Wisconsin case, Democratic voters are challenging Republican-drawn legislative districts. In the Maryland case, Republicans are claiming Democratic lawmakers drew a congressional district in a way that would prevent a Republican candidate from winning.

The North Carolina dispute centers on a congressional redistricting plan adopted by the Republican-led legislature in 2016. The Republican lawmaker in charge of the plan said it was crafted to favor his party because he thinks “electing Republicans is better than electing Democrats.”

“But that is not a choice the Constitution allows legislative mapdrawers to make,” the lower court said in unanimously striking down the plan.

🌊 WATCH: Aerial Drone Used to Save Two Swimmers’ Lives in Australia

January 18, 2018 by Mike Schuler

Lifeguards in Australia are being credited with saving two swimmers’ lives using a relatively new life-saving drone in what is believed to be a first-of-its-kind rescue.

The rescue in question took place on January 18, 2018, after lifeguards in New South Wales spotted two swimmers caught out in a rip current. According to officials, within just 70 seconds the UAV was hovering over the boys and launched an inflatable for them to grab onto – essentially saving their lives.

The rescue is believed to be the first time a drone has been used to rescue swimmers at sea.

Of course, the amazing rescue was caught on video by the drone itself:

The new drone, called the Little Ripper Lifesaver, is being used as part of a major investment New South Wales to incorporate drone technology to aid in shark tracking and monitoring, the Verge reports.

The maker of the Little Ripper drone, Kevin Weldon, said he was inspired to develop the device after seeing unmanned helicopters being used in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.

Family members of an El Faro’s crew member who lost his life when the American cargo ship tragically sank in 2015 are being recognized for their effort to assist Puerto Ricans impacted by Hurricane Maria.

In November 2017, Deb and Robin Roberts of Wilton, ME began a drive for relief goods in honor of their son Holland. Holland was one of 33 crew members who perished when the cargo ship the El Faro sank in Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015.

For three days in December, the Roberts visited Puerto Rico to distribute more than 30,390 pounds of food, water, personal hygiene supplies and other key goods to those in need.

While there, the Roberts visited Hogar Casa Feliz in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, an elderly home on the island as well as the community of Loiza, Puerto Rico to distribute goods, while the remainder of the items were provided to communities in need in conjunction with Para la Naturaleza.

Holland is said to have spent a significant amount of time in Puerto Rico as the El Faro was dedicated to the Puerto Rico trade lane. As such, the Roberts felt called to support the people and communities who played such an integral role in their son’s life.

“It was truly a rewarding experience to be able to help the people of Puerto Rico in memory of our son, Michael” commented Deb and Robin Roberts. “We are so grateful to everyone at TOTE for helping us to make the drive a success. Without their efforts and support, we never would’ve been able to make it happen. Upon our arrival in Puerto Rico, we were amazed at the sharp contrast between the sheer beauty of the island in areas like San Juan and the utter destruction in areas like Loiza caused by Hurricane Maria. Yet during our supplies delivery, the people of Loiza taught us a lesson in how to deal with adversity. Despite being without power for over three months, they were all smiling and even broke out in song and dance while they awaited the arrival of the delivery truck. The people of Puerto Rico truly love their island just like Michael did!”

TOTE Maritime Puerto Rico, owner of the El Faro, helped support the Roberts with their transportation and distribution efforts.

“Partnering with the Roberts to bring goods to the island has been a gift”  :icon_sunny: commented Anthony Chiarello, President and CEO of TOTE. “There are still so many families and communities struggling to survive after Hurricane Maria – these goods will be invaluable to people throughout the island.”

🐘 New calf born to a Sumatran elephant trained to reduce human-elephant conflict

A Sumatran elephant trained to help reduce human-elephant conflict in Indonesia’s Tesso Nilo National Park gave birth to a female calf. Named Harmoni Rimbo, meaning “the harmony of the jungle,” this little elephant is the third birth for mother Ria, one of the four trained adult Sumatran elephants in the elite Elephant Flying Squad.

When elephants wander into human inhabited areas in search of food—which happens more frequently as human settlements encroach on elephant habitat—the result is often damaged crops and property. WWF and the Indonesia Ministry of Forests established the Elephant Flying Squad in 2004 to address human-elephant conflict in Tesso Nilo.

Trained elephants like Ria, along with their handlers called mahouts, drive back wild elephants into the forest when they stray too close to villages or farms surrounding the park. The birth is a significant step in the conservation of this critically endangered elephant species.
