Virginia beach shooting: 11 dead and six wounded after gunman opens fire in government building, police say

Shooting suspect, who was a current city employee, is also dead

Eleven people have been killed and six others wounded after a "disgruntled" employee opened fire at a municipal centre in Virginia Beach, the city's police chief has said.

Police said the suspect, a long-term and current employee at Virginia Beach Municipal Centre fired "indiscriminately" and was killed when officers responded to the incident.

Virginia Beach Police police chief James Cervera told reporters an officer was among the six wounded, adding that he was "basically saved by his bulletproof vest".

“There’s no way to describe an incident such as this," said Mr Cervera.

At the same conference, Virginia Beach mayor Robert Dyer said: “This is the most devastating day in the history of Virginia Beach."

The shooting happened at the Virginia Beach Municipal Centre, a campus of city offices and agencies, which includes the police department. The shooting happened in Building Number 2, which includes offices for planning and public works.

"This day will not define Virginia Beach," said Virginia Beach councilman Aaron Rouse at the press conference. "We will come together. We show the strength of our city."

Officials told WAVY that one patient was taken to Sentara Pincess Anne hospital. They were brought by a helicopter reserved for severe injures. Five other patients were taken to Virginia Beach General, seemingly with lesser injuries.

"This is a tragic day for Virginia Beach and our entire Commonwealth," wrote Virginia governor Ralph Northam on Twitter. "My heart breaks for the victims of this devastating shooting, their families, and all who loved them. I am on my way to Virginia Beach now and will be there within the hour."

Weapon: .45 Cal Pistol.  No Assault Rifle.  Apparently legally purchased.

40 years old, Engineer.  Name: DeWayne Craddock.

Maybe you could pull assault rifles off the shelves.  .45 cal hanguns?  Fuhhgettaboudit.

Invest in Kevlar.

Body armour wont help against most CF rifles. Just makes you bulkier and slower to duck!
Get out of suburbia, or move to Terra-Australis. We have our fair share of fuckwits too, but we don't seem to arm them as heavily...

More worried about things that bite than gun shots here.

He didn't use a CF rifle.  He used a .45 Cal handgun, one of them with a Silencer which slows the muzzle velocity.  Body Armour works for that.

Hmmmm.
Its a sad indictment of a fucked up society when you feel the need for body armour in your every day life.
Cant say the society is any less fucked up down here. Just less well armed.
Every day we hear of car-jackings and assaults with weapons other than guns. My boss was car jacked in Melbourne a week ago by 5 axe and hammer wielding Sudanese youths. (They caught the one who he managed to punch shit out of before they drove off in his new AMG).
More and more people seem to have less and less respect for human life. In fact there seems to be less respect for any and all life right now; human or otherwise. We are becoming the worlds coal mine down here, with a big Indian owned mine about to start in Queensland, shipping right through the not so great barrier reef. Will kill far more life than any gunman could, even with a 45 ACP.
To quote a comic villain: "This town needs an enema!".
Society seems to need a good flush out right now. Too many lab rats in too small a cage, fighting for too few pieces of cheese.

It will all end in tears, even with kevlar.

Even if you could identify all the current psychos and disenchanted victims of industrial culture, the society makes a new one every day.  There will only be more of them for quite some time to come.

Kevlar isn't a permanent solution of course, but it might help you make it another day if you happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.  In this case, one of the few survivors wa the gestapo agent wearing his vest.

Allentown shooting: Deja Vu nightclub has had problems before

Ten people were shot outside the Deja Vu nightclub on Hamilton Street in Allentown early Thursday morning, police said, in one of the Lehigh Valley’s worst mass shootings in recent memory. (Tom DeSchriver/Of The Morning Call/The Morning Call)

Allentown’s Deja Vu nightclub, where officials say 10 people were shot outside by as many as three shooters early Thursday, has had problems before, Morning Call files show.

The current ownership took over the club in 2014 and bought the building in which it is housed in late 2017.

From The Morning Call’s records of coverage of the club, at 343 Hamilton St.:

March 4, 2018: After he was kicked out of the nightclub over an alleged assault on a security guard, a 24-year-old man fought with an Allentown police officer who was there to arrest him, police said.
Feb. 23, 2018: A man was shot as he left the nightclub at around 2:10 a.m. The victim suffered non-life threatening wounds.
March 27, 2016: Allentown police investigated a stabbing. The victim told police he left the nightclub at around 2 a.m. He was walking to his car when he felt something wet on his back and realized he was bleeding.
Sept. 6, 2015: A man pointed a gun at a security guard outside the club, court records said.

The club has also been cited for violating state liquor laws, including:

2017: Failing to post signs required by the Clean Indoor Air Act, which regulates smoking in public places.
2016: According to the state Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement, Deja Vu Nightclub was cited for allowing entertainment so loud it could be heard beyond the club’s property, and for allowing smoking in a no-smoking area.
