Chumming sharks so some idiot can stand inside a shark cage and take pictures is NOT, I repeat, NOT ecotourism.

Most people working in ecotourism are extremely aware of their impact on fragile ecosystems and endangered species, and go to great lengths not to cause damage to wildlife.

 But you always have stupid tourists who ignore instructions and touch the living coral or whatever. I've seen this happen in the Caribbean on guided snorkeling trips. Some people are just stupid and insensitive, or don't listen well, or English (or whatever) is not their language.

Compared to the wholesale slaughter of endangered species world-wide due to our extractive methods of conducting every kind of business, the damage from ecotourism is infinitely small in comparison. Academics are so over-the-top.
What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.
