📺 The Doomstead Diner TV Sitcom
« Reply #1635 on: May 07, 2018, 04:27:42 AM »
I was thinking about my Diner Menu thread, and it occured to me we could turn the Diner into a TV Sitcom! :icon_mrgreen: It would be sorta like Mel's Diner from the Sitcom Alice.

What we need to do is find actor/comedians who can play each of our parts on the show.

Who would you pick to play your part on the Diner Sitcom? If you are willing to risk insulting another Diner, you could suggest actor/comedians who might play their part well. I am not going to get myself into trouble doing that though. lol. I'll stick to some for myself I am considering for the part of RE.

In no particular order the Top 10 Candidates to play RE:

1- Sid Caesar

2- Robin Williams

3- Johnny Carson

4- Christopher Lloyd

5- Sam Kinison

6- George Carlin

7- Bill Hicks

8- Rodney Dangerfield

9- Chevy Chase

10- John Belushi

Feel free to suggest other candidates for my part. I promise I won't be insulted! lol. You can also put in a vote for one of the candidates I already suggested if you think that one could do a good job as RE on TV. Also suggest candidates for yourself. They don't HAVE to be funny people, after all not all Diners are very funny. lol.

Mel's?

More like this diner...

http://www.youtube.com/v/5oyZJDBUzWc&fs=1

Every actor in that Alice pic (exceptin' Alice) has the same type of face. Notice that? Maxillary vertical excess, aka "gummy smile". That's what it's called.

You can be Tom Cruise smoking cigarettes and Dustin Hoffman can play me. I'd like to be slightly less autistic, though.

Fleshing out the Doomstead Diner Sitcom Show Outline

No, Tom & Dustin were Customers, not Staff.

I just used Mel's because it was the only sitcom I remember where the main set was in a Diner. Had nothing to do with the cast. The cast at Mel's was mostly female which totally is NOT the Diner here! lol.

Other TV sitcom Diners used often but not main sets were on Happy Days

and Seinfeld

Again though, the main cast were all customers.

Our show will feature the staff as the main characters who are mostly male. We also will have a Bar in our TV Diner and a Bartender. A kitchen with chefs, waitresses, busboys and dishwashers. Also a Piano Man and a Karaoke stage and Poetry readings with an MC. We can have Guests like Allen Ginsburg and Jack Kerouac come do readings. We'll need an Accountant and a Financial Advisor/Tax Specialist. The exercise here is to pick an actor/comedian/singer/poet/writer to play yourself and what part you will play. You might fill multiple roles, like be a chef most of the time but on Poetry night introduce the poets as MC.

My main role obviously is as Proprietor of the establishment. However not Head Chef because lots of funny scenes could develop from me having arguments with the Head Chef. :icon_mrgreen:

Just from the list I provided, which of those 10 would you vote for to play me?

Here's the Exterior Set for the show used in the Intro with the opening credits rolling and the theme song playing.

You work on that one.

I started writing a collapse book, but I'm not sure were I'm going with it. I'll share it if the narrative gets off the ground. Because it's autobiograhical, I might not share it publicly. I just thought it might be a lot easier to write a good yarn about collapse than it is to actually live the story. Cheaper, and I don't have to divorce my wife. I just need something new to do with my collapse plagued existence. I'm collapse bored. Collapse challenged too. And too caught up in life here to make the kind of changes that I'd like to....

It has a John Irving feel to it, or at least that's what I'm going for. It's an exercise in discipline. If my history holds, I won't get through the 3rd chapter. We'll see.

I made it through 26 Chapters of the "How I Survived Collapse" Survivalist Parody Novel, about halfway. I may get back to that one and finish it. You can shoot for that. It did pick up the slack while collapse newz IRL was rather redundant and boring for a while and I had no new great insights to share.

Got any ideas for actor/comedians to play your part in the sitcom if you don't wanna pick one for me? I have some ideas...lol.

I can't see me in a sit com. Actors who could play the real me would be..... Robert Duvall, maybe William Hurt.

Feel free to riff on your choices to your heart's content. It won't bother me. Give it your best shot.

Jesus, this Forum really is over, isn't it? I am reminded of, "Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business," a book by Neil Postman. That book incidentally came out of a panel on George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. In the introduction, Postman says that the contemporary world was better reflected by Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, whose public was addicted to amusement, than by Orwell's work, where they were oppressed by the state.

To play RE:

1. Steve Buscemi
2. Gary Oldman
3. Chris Cooper. He'd actually be able to do it.
4. Tim Roth. Plus, he's short.
5. Nathan Lane. You'd have to grunge him up.

Eddie:
I liked Jeff Daniels. Also Fred Thompson and Richard Jenkins. Eddie's suggestion of Robert Duvall is actually spot-on.
And then I thought of Gene Hackman.

Me: John Goodman.

Over? It's not Over until we SAY it's Over!

Anyhow, your casting is now set in stone. John Goodman was my first choice for you! :icon_mrgreen:

For your main role, I think you would be best as the Head Bartender. Secondary role as Diner Bouncer.

For Eddie, here are a few of my ideas, in no particular order.

From the world of Comedy:

1- Bud Abbot- Possibly the best Straight Man ever.

2- Jeff Foxworthy- "You know you're a Redneck if..." lol

3- Harold Lloyd- Who else would climb a tree to retrieve a cheap ass Boomerang?

4- Tommy Chong- Aging Stoner

From the world of Acting:

5- Lord Lawrence Olivier- Obvious. The original Dentist in Marathon Man. :icon_mrgreen:

6- Sir John Gielgud- Great Deadpan actor. Remember Arthur taking a bath? "I'll Alert the Media..." lol

7- Sam Elliot- Nobody does Texas Cowboy like Sam, and he grows the best Mustache in cinema with the possible exception of Tom Selleck

For Eddie's Main Role, it's Head Chef. Also MC on Music & Poetry Nights on the Diner Stage.

For myself, Chris Cooper could play me, he's a very versatile actor, but I don't think he is funny enough. I'm still trying to figure out which of my own 10 nominees is my first choice. Besides my Main Role as Proprietor, I'll also serve as Maitre'd.

We still need at least 2 Sous Chefs, Dishwashers, Busboys and Waiters.

Belushi is pretty high on my list but I think he would have trouble playing the thoughtful, sensitive side of RE.

As good an actor as he is, even Sean Penn could not play Spicoli anymore. Spicoli as a burned out college Anthropology professor yes, Spicoli as a high school stoner, no. I don't want to be the bearer of bad newz, but you're no spring chicken.
