Swarm Intelligence is a con.

The "proof" that it works is that the swarm did better at picking football results than did the individuals.  But there is NO INTELLIGENCE involved in picking football results, so there is no "swarm intelligence".

The situation becomes clearer if you replace picking football results with picking dice throws, which everybody accepts as being random.  What will individuals pick for the first throw? - a more or less even spread of the possibilities.  What will the swarm pick? - any one possibility.  What does the first throw actually produce? - one possibility.  If the swarm gets it right, what does that prove? - nothing.

The con relies on peoples' imagined belief that they can pick football results at better than standard odds.  If they could do this, they could make a fortune betting on results, but they can't.  That's why the bookies are still in business.

What is really disappointing is that none of the stupid people on r/collapse recognise the con, and are eager to take part in this great experiment.

First off, dice throws don't have equal odds.  7 comes up most often because the most combinations of the dice adding up to 7 exist. 6-1, 5-2, 3-4, 4-3, 2-5, 1-6.  For 2, only one combination exists, 1-1.

Nor are football teams dice.  Like Horseracing it can be Handicapped and odds of one team or another winning calculated.  The individual handicapper does this by evaluating the record of the team's wins and losses against other teams, the quality of the players, whether they have a strong offense or defense, what the weather will be like (dry clear weather good for a passing game, rainy windy weather better for a running game) etc.

The contention here of the Swarm folks is that in aggregate the group does better handicapping than the individual.  I don't know if that is true or false.  I don't know how many football games they tested this out on, it would need to be many to establish the validity of the claim.

In any event, it is a fun experiment.

As long as the teacher is available through live streaming with one-on-one help, I don't see that physically sitting in the same room together is necessary.

Ever take an online class? One-on-one help is promised but almost never delivered. Online college is another scam.

Obviously, it has to be delivered.  We're assuming the system is being run honestly, not as a scam.

This is predicated on college being an antiquated system that is being replaced by something more efficient.
No, it is predicated on college being replaced by something more USEFUL.
