It looks to me like Hillary has done better than Trump in her selection of running mate. It is obvious that Trump's brain bank felt he needed to reach out to the people who voted for Ted Cruz. Without Cruz's direct support, choosing the closest clone he could find would have to suffice.

Political strategists think about what they can do to carry key states, like Ohio, NY, Texas, California, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Florida. After that, the game is won or lost on whether the candidate can win less important states that are close and might go either way. VP candidate choices are often coldly calculated to deliver the vote in those states.

Pence is a choice calculated to deliver Iowa,Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, and hopefully Ohio, although Ohio is a long shot.

Kaine is good in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, and maybe Colorado or Nevada.

Looking at it from a perspective of battleground states, it appears that Clinton is very close to having the election locked up, regardless of what various pundits think.

A lot can happen between July and November, but I predict Clinton will win it pulling away.
