« on: August 21, 2016, 06:40:23 AM »
Old computer

I am using a 2002 computer with Windows X2 sp2...it is very slow, so I am experimenting with an iPad now that was given to us.

Aaargh !  Win-XP SP2 hasn't received any updates from Microsoft since Feb 2014, so is wide open to many well-known exploits.  XP is dead.  Someone gave you an iPad - which means it is probably junk/infected.  You could give your computer a new lease on life by installing a lightweight OS like Lubuntu - download it from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Lubuntu/GetLubuntu , burn it to CD, copy your data files to something, reboot using the CD.  I can give you more support if you need it.

I also make music with "Reason", "Koan", and an installation of virtual midi ports on the old clunker. Would Lubuntu allow these Windows based programs? We do have a less powerful old computer I could put Lubuntu on and use for the internet. Maybe try it on that computer?

Compatability between Linux and Windows audio is poor, so I doubt that you could get Windows music apps to work on Linux Lubuntu.  You have an older computer than that?  It really needs a minimum of 500 MB of RAM, and that would handle running a web browser OK, but be very slow if you wanted to do other things as well.

Let's turn that around... there are a lot of pretty good music apps for Linux, and most of them are open source and do have binaries that will work under Windows.  I'm partial to Audacity myself.  But it really depends on what you're doing.  Wikipedia has a really good list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Linux_audio_software

You could check out the Windows versions and see if any would work for you before making the switch to Linux.
