So what is wrong with this place, when FINALLY we get some apocalyptic mess going, the MSM is all over it, and Happy McDoomsters don't notice? Everyone asleep this morning, or what?

Others here have been posting about this fire for the last several days. The fact that you haven't been able to find anyone to read them to you reveals far more about you than it does about anyone else.

German Study Proves It – 95% Of Greek "Bailout" Money Went To The Banks

German Study Proves It – 95% Of Greek "Bailout" Money Went To The Banks

I simply cannot stress enough how important Greece is to freedom, liberty and civilization across the globe. Greece is not a one-off, or merely a small nation in big trouble that holds little relevance for the rest of us. Greece is everything.

What is happening to Greece follows the exact same game plan of what will eventually happen to every other supposedly sovereign nation. First there is an explosion of debt. Then a crisis. Then a bailout. Then creditor imposed hardship is forced upon the average population, in conjunction with unlimited bailouts for the bankers and other oligarch criminals.

Finally, when a public which mistakenly believes it is living in a democracy exercises its right to national sovereignty, the sad truth is exposed. They are not a people living under a free political system.

– From last year’s post: This is Sparta – 1,000 Bitcoin ATMs are Coming to Greece

A recent German study just confirmed what tens of millions of Greeks already knew. That they are a people fully conquered by criminal mega banks and the corrupt politicians and technocrats in their employ.

Get ready for another epic screw job this summer.

From Ekathimerini:

Some 95 percent of the 220 billion euros disbursed to Greece since the start of the financial crisis as loans from the bailout mechanism has been directed toward saving the European banks. That means about 210 billion euros was eventually channeled to the eurozone credit sector while just 5 percent ended up in state coffers, according to a study by the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin.

“Europe and the International Monetary Fund have in previous years mainly saved the banks and other private creditors,” concluded the report, published yesterday in German newspaper Handelsblatt. ESMT director Jorg Rocholl told the financial newspaper that “the bailout packages mainly saved the European banks.”

The economists who took part in the study have analyzed each loan separately to established where the money ended up, and concluded that just 9.7 billion euros – less than 5 percent – actually found its way into the Greek budget for the benefit of citizens.

“This is something that everyone suspected, but few people actually knew. That has now been confirmed by the study.

Remind me again about who is supposed to be the "librul" party?

The Intercept is a good source of investigation and analysis.

Democratic Convention Hosted by Republican Donors, Anti-Obamacare Lobbyists

THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY’S 2012 platform pledged to “curb the influence of lobbyists and special interests.” But the 2016 convention in Philadelphia will be officially hosted by lobbyists and corporate executives, a number of whom are actively working to undermine progressive policies achieved by President Barack Obama, including health care reform and net neutrality.

Some of the members of the 2016 Democratic National Convention Host Committee, whose job is to organize the logistics and events for the convention, are hardly even Democratic Party stalwarts, given that many have donated and raised thousands of dollars for Republican presidential and congressional candidates this cycle.

The composition of the 15-member Host Committee may appear out of sync with the rhetoric of Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, but the reality is that the party, in the form of the Democratic National Committee, has moved decisively to embrace the lobbying industry. In October 2015, DNC chair Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., reportedly huddled with dozens of lobbyists to plan the convention in Philadelphia, and provided the influence peddlers involved with a menu of offerings in exchange for donations. In February, news reports revealed that the DNC had quietly lifted the Obama-era ban on federal lobbyist donations to the party and convention committee.

Anna Adams-Sarthou, the communications director for the Philadelphia 2016 Host Committee, wrote in an email to The Intercept that she has “no concerns” about lobbyists participating in the effort, because “the Host Committee is a nonprofit entity that does not lobby.”

The Host Committee, however, is deeply involved in planning events for the delegates, fundraising, and handling media relations, among other responsibilities.

Our Host Committee is made up a diverse group of civic leaders that have led efforts like this in the past, many of whom were integrally involved in the bid for Philadelphia to host the convention,” Adams-Sarthou wrote.

The Host Committee’s finance chair is Daniel Hilferty. In his day job, Hilferty is CEO of Independence Blue Cross, a health insurance giant that covers nine million people. In December, Hilferty became board chairmanof the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association of America, a trade group that lobbies for the insurance industry, and he serves on the board of directors of America’s Health Insurance Plan’s (AHIP), the insurance industry lobbying group that spearheaded the campaign against the Affordable Care Act. Lobby registration documents show the BCBS Association is actively supporting a number of Republican bills to roll back provisions of the ACA.

In an interview conducted late last year, Hilferty said he plans to make “sure to work closely at the congressional level, with the administration, with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, to have input” into how the ACA is implemented under the next administration.

Hilferty has also donated heavily to Republicans this cycle, giving $10,000 to Prosperity for Pennsylvania, a Super PAC supporting the reelection of Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa.; $1,000 to the PAC supporting Sen. Orin Hatch, R-Utah; $1,000 to Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C.; $2,700 to Chris Christie’s presidential campaign; $25,300 to the NRCC, a GOP committee designed to re-elect House Republicans; and $2,700 to Jeb Bush. Hilferty also gave $2,700 to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Allyson Schwartz, a former Democratic lawmaker, is a co-chair of the Host Committee. She was recently named head of a new advocacy group for the health insurance industry called Better Medicare Alliance. The group, according to the Center for Public Integrity, was set up by APCO, a lobbying firm for health insurance companies, to push to expand Medicare Advantage plans, the privately managed programs that were curtailed with the enactment of the ACA.

David Cohen is the special advisor to the Host Committee, and serves as the executive vice president of Comcast, overseeing the company’s lobbying and regulatory strategy. In addition to being a “Hillblazer” — one of Hillary Clinton’s bundlers who has raised $100,000 or more — Cohen has been a particularly bitter and duplicitous leading opponent of the rules regarding net neutrality, the principle that all Internet traffic must be treated equally. And despite hosting fundraisers for Clinton at his homelast summer, Cohen has spent heavily to help elect a Republican Congress, including recent donations to the NRCC; Sen. Toomey; Sen. Scott; Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H.; as well as $33,400 to the NRSC, a committee for helping elect GOP members to the Senate.

The Philadelphia Host Committee chair, former Gov. Ed Rendell, headed for Wall Street as soon as he left office, and has since represented a number of controversial special interests. In 2011, as New York was debating regulations on fracking, Rendell wrote a pro-fracking opinion column in the New York Daily News, while failing to disclose that he was a paid consultant at a private equity firm that had investments in the industry.

That same year, Rendell started providing paid speeches on behalf of the Mujahideen-e Khalq (MEK), a fringe Iranian exile group that was considered a terrorist organization by the State Department at the time (it was delistedin 2012).

The former governor also joined the group Fix The Debt — an organizationbacked by private equity billionaire Pete Peterson that advocates for cutting Social Security benefits — co-chairing its activities alongside Judd Gregg.

Rendell is currently a special counsel at the law and lobbying firm Ballard Spahr; earlier this year, the firm launched a new election law group, advising clients on campaign finance and lobbying strategy.

“The Democratic Party, especially the DNC, have never liked Obama’s policies to disengage lobbyists from campaign fundraising,” says Craig Holman, an expert on ethics and campaign finance with Public Citizen. “The party only went along with the restrictions because Obama was the party leader. As soon as Obama could no longer be viewed as the leader of the party, the DNC quietly repealed the lobbyist restrictions. The public learned about it only weeks later.”

“Party bosses have always preferred a Wild West when it comes to fundraising,” he adds. “If party bosses had their way, we would have no restrictions on campaign contributions to the parties and return to the days of Tammany Hall.”

I find myself in too many arguments on this point with well meaning left-of-center types.

Monkeys With Smaller Testicles Scream Louder to Compensate, Study Finds

Draw your own conclusions as to comparisons between the behavior reported in this research and the behavior displayed by certain alleged primates on this board.

Monkeys With Smaller Testicles Scream Louder to Compensate, Study Finds

 - Oct 23, 2015

howler

A new study finds that Howler monkeys scream louder when they have smaller testicles.

The study published yesterday in the journal Current Biology said that howler monkeys with deep roars — used to attract females, deter love rivals and scare off predators — tend to also have smaller testicals and a shortage of sperm compared to their peers.

howlermonkey_02

According to Charles Darwin, writing on how species’ evolutionary choices impact each other in “On the Origin of Species”:

“The whole organism is so tied together that when slight variations in one part occur, and are accumulated through natural selection, other parts become modified.”

howlermonkey_04

Biological anthropologist Jacob Dunn and his team from Cambridge University wanted to see if there was a negative correlation between the size of a howler monkey’s vocal tract and the size of his testicles.

The team used 3D laser scanners to analyze a cup-shaped chamber in the howler monkey’s throat called a hyoid that acts an echo chamber. Dr. Dunn said:

“The results of our acoustic analyses show that howler monkeys produce roars at a similar frequency as tigers, which is far lower than we would have predicted from their body size, yet exactly what would be predicted from measuring their giant vocal folds’ which are three times bigger than in a human.”

howlermonkey_03

Howler monkeys can be found in the forests of Central and South America and weigh roughly 15 pounds, but their growl can reach 128 decibels, which is equivalent to the roar of a tiger.

The researchers speculate that this is because howler monkeys want to give the impression that they are bigger than they actually are. Dr. Dunn proposed:

“It may be that investment in developing a large vocal organ and roaring is so costly that there is simply not enough energy left to invest in testes.

“Alternatively, using a large vocal organ for roaring may be so effective at deterring rival males that there is no need to invest in large testes.”

howlermonkey_01

The study furthered that males with bigger hyoids had smaller testicles and lived in smaller social groups where there was a single male dominating a number of females.

Male howler monkeys with bigger testes and smaller hyoids most likely lived in bigger social groups and had to share partners. Dunn said:

“In evolutionary terms, all males strive to have as many offspring as they can, but when it comes to reproduction you can’t have everything.”

Living a full life never struck me as a compensation? Just sort of a natural result of having made the right choices along the way, and knowing that when an opportunity is presented, to make the most of it. Pretty fundamental stuff seems to me.

Howler monkeys live in the canopy of dense rainforests, where the line of sight is low, and need a large territory to successfully raise a family.  So they establish their territory by sound and not sight (howling rather than displaying), and the whole family howls together, not just the dominant male.  Their roars are to tell adjacent families (competitors for resources) to keep away, NOT to "attract females, deter love rivals and scare off predators."

So now you are a self-appointed primatologist? If you have specific background in the study of primates, by all means hold forth.

It is arrogance and sheer pecksniffery to call this article "click-bait for adolescent Facebook users," and if you have an issue with the editorial direction, take it up with the contributor from Live Science.  That was the original source link provided with the article. If you found this article "click bait," you'd love their headline:
Howler Monkeys with Deeper Calls Have Smaller Balls

The thrust of the article is about the relationship between testes size and the hyoid bone. The speculation about the purpose of the calls is a small part of the article and quite beside the point.
The writer, Stephanie Knapp, interviewed Leslie Knapp, one of the primary investigators. The abstract from Current Biology summarizes the findings as follows:

-Howler monkey hyoid volume varies significantly between sexes and among species
-Hyoid volume negatively correlates with number of males per group and testes volume
-Larger hyoids lower formant spacing, increasing the acoustic impression of body size
-Results provide the first evidence of a trade-off between vocal investment and testes

The article discusses each. So what's your problem?

Generally speaking, PY's problem is that from his POV, the rest of the world of Homo Saps are a bunch of ignorant teenagers and he's the only adult in the room who knows the Truth.  He has said so himself. lol.

Particularly with respect to scientific articles, PY is ready to jump on anything to demonstrate why it is hogwash and click bait for the masses, and pitch forth his version of the Truth about said topic.

Also, you will find that arguing with PY about one of the many topics he is a World Class Expert on is like arguing with AG about Renewables.  You'll get swamped with prose and data and links. lol.

Surly1: So what's your problem?

I was just pointing out "Hyoid volume negatively correlates with ..." and "Results provide the first evidence of ..." is a non-sequitur - correlation does not imply causation.  I am enough of a primatologist to know that.  Do you seriously think that if male howler monkeys would be more successful (more offspring) with bigger testes that they wouldn't have evolved already?  Loudness and testes size are clearly independent variables, so to find that one variable negatively correlates with the other variable is meaningless.
