Re: Genocide Scholar
« Reply #1152 on: January 28, 2020, 10:47:36 AM »
So...this one made my bullshit detector go off.

One...I wanted to know what groups this "genocide scholar" considered to be at risk. And why?

Jews? Blacks? Achondroplastic Dwarves?

Nope. Turns out this writer is worried about Muslims, the Homeless, Immigrants, and Trans people.

So who is this expert and what is her background?  What makes her a Genocide Scholar? When I read something being sold to me as real expert opinion , I just want to see if maybe the source might have some axe to grind. I'm suspicious that way.

Well, as it turns out, "she" used to be a he. Brynn Tannehill was a Navy helicopter pilot until she transitioned in 2010 and became a vocal activist for the LGBT community and an advocate for transgendered people in the military. She writes for HuffPo and elsewhere and is a prolific blogger evidently.

She wrote a book, of course, which in America automatically makes you AN AUTHORITY  (and I might add, a member of a minority, because it implies you actually know how to read.)

She appears to self-identify as a lesbian, since she is married to a woman and they have a family.

So...here's what bothers me. I take threats of genocide seriously. I do worry about white supremacists and the general tendency among the lower social classes in our society and certain fundamental religious groups to  blame all their problems on people of different ethnicities.

I generally think we're at a stage where racism plays out one racist at a time, or maybe a group of racists carrying out some violent action at a rally, like we saw in Charlotte. But I seriously doubt that such groups are anywhere near having enough power to get away with acting out something that might resemble real genocide,.......as long as:

 (a) we have a very big and well-equipped federal law enforcement apparatus perfectly capable of using their own brand of uber-violence to control rogue elements like Neo-Nazis and those who like to tote assault rifles in public and carry out mass lynchings and disappear people.

(b) a news media that (although given to lying about many things) still generally puts out the message that killing people who are different than you is NOT okay.

and

 (c) the individual states are kept completely cowed by the federal government, which they are, and aren't about to secede anytime soon, which they are NOT, regardless of what some conspiracy theorists believe or would like to believe.

So...while I think individual Muslims, trans persons, homeless people and immigrants (especially from the Middle East) will be targeted by individual nut cases and various small bands of racist scum types, I don't see mass genocide along the lines of a Rwanda or a Myanmar  as remotely likely.

And...I think women with penises (not sure if Brynn has one anymore or not)  who marry other women......are pushing the limits on gender-bending that should be accepted by the rest of us as just "different but normal"....butt hey, I have no wish to see them wiped out....I just don't see that I'm obliged to think they're unbiased sources of information who should be listened to....

And I have a hard time giving such a person broad credence as an expert on genocide, just because she wrote a book called 'Everything You Wanted To Know about Trans But Were Afraid To Ask".

But that's just me..

Re: Genocide Scholar
« Reply #1154 on: January 29, 2020, 08:01:27 AM »
So...this one made my bullshit detector go off.

One...I wanted to know what groups this "genocide scholar" considered to be at risk. And why? Jews? Blacks? Achondroplastic Dwarves?

And we all know how easily triggered Eddie's "bullshit detector" is. It sends out a screeching howl anytime it detects "social justice" on the horizon, or a concern for those not typically rendered immune to prejudice by being white men. In fact, the phrases "white privilege" or "white male rage" will turn his "bullshit detector" into a hooting klaxon.
Nope. Turns out this writer is worried about Muslims, the Homeless, Immigrants, and Trans people.

None of whom, in Trump's America, have anything to worry about?

Let's be clear. this article is authored by Alan Macleod, who quotes from a writer, scholar and activist named Brynn Tannehill. Tannehill told Macleod that the US, under Trump is already several steps down the path towards committing genocide. This is not a casual concern. Are to argue the the US is not a more intolerant place today than it was in 2016?

Muslims: Guess that travel ban never happened. Plus:

Homeless: As has been noted here many times, the only unforgivable crime in America is to be poor. Since you're not poor, no problem, I guess. Those stories posted here and elsewhere in the past about criminalizing feeding the homeless and otherwise making life intolerable them are just the ravings of the always-mocked-by-Eddie "social justice warriors."

Homeless welcome mat:

The homeless have it so good in this country that there has sprung up such a thing as "hostile design," design features implemented into city and town planning which were created specifically to deter homeless people from finding somewhere to sleep. Just a visceral-- and visible-- extension of society's collective disregard for their fate.

Sleeping rough? Sleeping somewhere else.

Municipalities have other ways of showing the homeless how welcome they are:

Many cities have made it illegal to feed the homeless:

LGBTQ/Trans people?
Really? Transgender bathroom Laws? Laws seeking to criminalize or prohibit care for trans people?

Just stand back and admire a perfectly sculpted piece of ad hominem disinformation. It glistens in the morning sunlight. When you don't like the opinion, attack the speaker. Worthy of the Trump "defense" team, and well beneath the level of discourse you usually provide. I must confess my own blind spot as regards LGBTQ people, sine I have not in 70m years entertained a second of "gender uncertainty," and it requires a leap of imagination I can't make to imagine being unsure of what body you should be in. But I must say that for this who do so wrestle, their gender identity (or uncertainty) ought not to nullify or be a disqualified for ALL of their other activities for the rest of their lives. As you suggest.

Likewise, I am surprised to learn that writing a book disqualifies you from being considered "AN AUTHORITY, or seriously about anything at all."

From the article to which you object:
Quote
Tannehill, who studied genocides for her Ph.D., noted that they “rarely go from zero to all out slaughter in the blink of an eye.” Instead, preparations begin sometimes years in advance, slowly moving the population to the point of acceptance or support for an all out crackdown on demonized populations.

Does working for one's Ph. D. with a specialty in studying genocides mean that you are not a "genocide scholar" by definition?

Let's take Tannehill in her own words:
Quote
"First, there’s the propaganda, supported by things like government reporting of the crimes committed by the people they target... then there’s public safety measures. Removing them from the military, and from federal service. Revoking clearances. Egging on stochastic intimidation and violence and failing to prosecute people who commit it.”

Are you saying that these things have not happened in this country try in the past three years? You must not, because you can't. Not seriously.

Wherein we finally get to the criticism part of your comment.

The one "racist at a time" wears thin when they travel in groups, Cf. Klan, K.K., Charlottesville, Richmond last week. Also, the exhortations of the Head Racist in Charge and his thinly-veiled dog whistles to unleash his hounds hardly sounds like my ideas of restraint by norms.

Quote from: Fat Orange
"I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump – I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad. But the left plays it cuter and tougher. Like with all the nonsense that they do in Congress ... with all this invest[igations] — that’s all they want to do is — you know, they do things that are nasty. Republicans never played this.”[/quote

Bill Clinton would like a word.

Quote from:  More Fat Orange
"Law enforcement, military, construction workers, Bikers for Trump ... They travel all over the country .... They’ve been great. But these are tough people ... But they’re peaceful people, and antifa and all — they’d better hope they stay that way."

So...while I think individual Muslims, trans persons, homeless people and immigrants (especially from the Middle East) will be targeted by individual nut cases and various small bands of racist scum types, I don't see mass genocide along the lines of a Rwanda or a Myanmar  as remotely likely.

As does Tannehill, as you might have noticed if you read more carefully.

What does does being a penile-American have to do with the issue being discussed? Tannehill has written much more than the book that you choose to cite as mockery, and it this commentary for which Tannehill was interviewed. Here is a recent (January 23) Twitter thread, which may shed some light on why Macleod chose to interview her:

Quote from: Brynn Tannehill
I study genocide. It's been a theme in my academic endeavors for nearly 30 years. More accurately, I study the conditions in the lead up to genocide, be they cultural, social, political, economic, etc... 1/n
There's common themes and patterns. Usually it happens in an economically distressed country with falling standards of living for most people. Rising infant mortality is a good indicator variable. 2/n
The politicians enacting it are populists who benefit from stirring Us vs. Them narratives, placing blame for the woes of the nation on others who are somehow less worthy. They yearn for a mythological past w/o these people. It's a highly viable tactic for shoring up support 3/n
The "others" are labeled as criminals, perverts, threats to women and children, disgusting, and generally unworthy of empathy. Anyone who supports the vulnerable minority is attacked with, "So you support the horrible things these degenerates do?" 4/n
This effectively undercuts anyone from speaking out, for fear of being labeled as sympathetic to a parade of horribles.

The government also modifies the courts to ensure they will not block actions they take. 5/n
In the 20th and 21st century, genocide rarely goes from zero to all out slaughter in the blink of an eye. Even in Rwanda, the anti-Tutsi propaganda started in earnest in 1990. The plan for the slaughter began taking shape in 1992. Preparation began over a year ahead. 6/n
In countries where there is still something resembling a functional (ostensibly) elected government, the phases are slower. First, there's the propaganda, supported by things like government reporting of the crimes committed by the people they target. 7/n
Then there's public safety measures. Removing them from the military, and from federal service. Revoking clearances. Egging on stochastic intimidation and violence and failing to prosecute people who commit it. 8/n
Revoking basic civil rights once you have the courts in place to allow (or enact) it comes next. Establishing that the target group has less civil rights than every other member of the population, even de facto, adds legitimacy to what comes next. 9/n
Now that there's second class status, you can keep them out of the education system and deny them access to health care. Jobs are scarce. You can create vast zones where the minority is forbidden from public life. Make them carry/wear IDs identifying them as "other" 10/n
(If this sounds familiar, the Germans modeled their 1930's laws on those used to keep the US South segregated.)

Police harass and target the minority, and they are often arrested and abused with little reason. People disappear into the system. The goal of this is two fold 11/n
First is to get the public inured to these abuses. People disappear all the time, right?

Second, and this is where genocide actually starts, is to get people to actually voluntarily pack up and leave the country, or actively hide who they are. 12/n
This is the beginnings of cultural genocide: the minority disappears from the culture because they have either left, or have gone underground.

At the same time, the government is testing the world community to see how they react to other outrages. 13/n
Whether it's acts of military aggression, bellicose leaders, assassinating journalists, putting foreign nationals in filthy over crowded camps that are black holes; the country on the verge of genocide is looking to see if they can provoke a reaction. It almost never comes 14/n
In part, because the groups targeted are ones that other countries simply don't care about either. Jews, Tutsis, gays, Roma, South Sudanese, the disabled, mentally ill, poverty stricken immigrants; they historically aren't worth starting a fight over.

At some point, the government determines or realizes that no one will intervene, and that there's no additional consequences to moving to the next steps: where they move to planning on how to get rid of the targeted population. 16/n
How they carry out mass killing is irrelevant, in the sense that it's way too late to do anything by this point, and that it doesn't follow a pattern. Sometimes it's camps and neglect. Guns. Machetes. Killing fields. Death marches. Sometimes it's all of the above. 17/n
What is interesting to me is watching for the warning signs
* Rising infant mortality
* Demonizing government propaganda
* Us v. Them narrative
* Mythological past free of a minority
* Populist government
* Breakdown of democratic norms
* Politicized court beholden to party 18/n
* Removing minority from federal service
* Legally establishing that minority doesn't have same rights as everyone else
* Encouraging stochastic violence
* Preventing access to health care system
* Preventing access to education 19/n
* Mandatory segregation from general population under penalty of law
* Requiring something that outs people as the minority (ID, worn item, name, etc)
* Random arrests
* Indefinite "black hole" detentions
* Testing to see if foreign governments will move to stop abuses 20/n
* Minority groups fleeing the country.

However, if you're seeing these last two, it's probably already too late. I can't think of a time the world cut off a genocide at the pass, and global sentiment against refugees (SS St. Louis) means few escape. 21/n
Are you worried yet? You probably should be.

Because I am very, very worried. I am not saying it will definitely happen, but the necessary conditions are there, and many of the precursor events are in motion. 22/n
My spouse and our kids are Canadian.

We're laying the groundwork to go back there in 2021, even if I don't have a job waiting. 23/n

I found this set of notes pretty thoughtful, even if the author has no dick.
