The Michael Lewis piece on Tom Wolfe was very tasty. Thanks for posting that.

Over the years, I've found that some of the best  writing ABOUT writers is to be found in their obituaries, especially if the obituaries are written by the departed writer's literary peers. The only living peer I can think of for Wolfe might be Larry McMurtry, but Lewis comes close, and this is a story that does old Tom justice.

Over the years, I've found that some of the best  writing ABOUT writers is to be found in their obituaries, especially if the obituaries are written by the departed writer's literary peers. The only living peer I can think of for Wolfe who is still alive might be Larry McMurtry, but Lewis comes close, and this is a story that does old Tom justice.

Thank you for noticing and looking at it. Your point about the best writing ABOUT writers is to be found in their obituaries is dead on, IMO. Writers know how to weave a story: report the feelings, not just the facts, let the details tell the story, subvert the character and even subvert the genre. They know how to bend a note. Richard Corliss of Time was a master of the form.

I try to stuff the DDDaily full of Easter eggs and other chewy goodness, and keep it twaddle-free. Not always successfully. If you subscribe to (and consult) mags like The Atlantic, Harper's, Vanity fair, and The New Yorker, you encounter a lot of terrific long form writing that doesn't sit here or even in a "paper." I had even thought about a Diner "literary supplement" or magazine at one point, to collect such good writing, but decided the world (and the six people left who still read the Forum) could find a way to survive without it.

The Doomstead Diner is a hub for discussion and information pertaining to the ongoing Economic Collapse of the Industrial Economy. The Diner is the result of many years of discussion and debate on many other forums. At Doomstead Diner, our goal is to collate much of the information we can to assist in planning for the world to come.

Another great piece, the one about the 9.9% meritocracy. There is no doubt that this is my socioeconomic group. I only want to make a couple of comments that I think are worth mentioning.

One is that I object to the term "new aristocracy". The truth is that this article describes people who are the antithesis of aristocrats. Aristocrats are born into nobility. Aristocrats do nothing to deserve their special status. On the other hand, people like me, the only thing we inherit is concerned parents (and yes, having two helps) that send us to decent schools and give us a narrative we can somehow buy into. Like "get an education".

In it's essence, this article just says kids who come from good homes who pursue educations with an eye toward getting the best jobs, who then marry well and work hard and save, can still end up better off than their parents.

Duh.

How many people do that? Not that many....oh, possibly 10%.

Duh.

I see kids every day growing up. I follow them from birth to adulthood in my practice. I see the following pattern play out in real time over and over. Here's what blocks most of the kids I see  from making it financially as adults:

1. Their parents don't teach them about birth control, and they don't prepare them for responsible sexual behavior. Over and over, I see kids having kids. Me? I had a big family. But I didn't start until I was 28. How in the hell is someone supposed to do well in life if they are saddled with a baby (or more likley two or three) at age 16 or 18?

2. Their parents don't stress college, and beyond that, they don't stress that whatever higher education a kid pursues, it needs to be a means to an end, the end being a high paying job. Not all educations lead to jobs.

3. Parents don't teach kids the laws of money (mostly because they themselves are grossly ignorant). My parents were guilty here, but I did learn a little from their mistakes, although I've repeated a lot of them.

4. Too many times, divorce snatches success away. People start to build a tiny nest egg, contribute to a 401K, buy a house, do some of the right things, and then lose it all and have to start over. In our serial monogamy culture, it can happen 2 or 3 times easily. Makes you want to give up. I know, I've been there.

5. And last but not least, we have a culture where men, once they reach a certain age, tend to not be interested in family.  I see way too many 40 year old divorced men, the women they married long abandoned, their kids either forgotten or just somebody they grudgingly write a support check for every month. A lot of them move back in with.....guess who? Mom.

People in the 9.9% don't seem to be understanding about the "regular" people losing their piece of the pie? Not sympathetic? No solidarity?

Why is that surprising?  Since they DID delay their own sexual and financial gratification, put off having a family, struggled through years of really serious training to become technically competent at some kind of work that still exists.

They DID make sacrifices to save some of what they made and put money into well thought out investments that they stuck with through thick and thin and didn't bail on. When they failed they got back up and kept trying until they somehow succeeded.

When I read articles like this calling these people the lucky ones, I have to laugh. They make their own luck.

And I can't speak for all the people in the "new aristocracy" but speaking for myself, I know damn good and well it's harder than it used to be. I don't need to see the stats. I know that the people who had the same job I have in the last generation had it easier than I do.  And accrued wealth far easier, if they did the right things to make that happen. I struggle to make my plan work, and  it's still touch and go. Some aristocracy.

Why is that it's surprising that people who make LOW effort  are doing far worse? These articles make it seem like class warfare because young people can't just fall off the turnip truck and end up with money in the bank. I know it's hard. In the last generation it was far easier.

The days when someone with a high school diploma could go to work for Ford or GM or GE (where my Dad worked) and become middle class union factory laborers are long gone, and they aren't coming back. There are fewer jobs in general, the unions have all been busted, and more people lined up to try to get what jobs are there.

For my kids it's going to be harder still. They'll probably live to see the die-off, when it comes. There will be, at some point, NO jobs. None.

Yesterday, Google did one of those things where they "honored" someone. Kinda silly, but it was the 20th century artist Tamara de Lempicka. I spent some time looking at her paintings, which are pretty good. I had seen her work, but didn't know her story. I was impressed by a quote she was known for:

There are no miracles. There is only what you make.
What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.

Another great piece, the one about the 9.9% meritocracy. There is no doubt that this is my socioeconomic group. I only want to make a couple of comments that I think are worth mentioning.

Not  surprised you responded. I thought of you when I found it.

That is WAAAY simplistic. In fact, what the author says is the gains of the .1 percent have come almost exclusively from the bottom 90 per cent. The charmed 10 per cent is managing to hold their own in terms of overall wealth as a part of the economy.

"The meritocratic class has mastered the old trick of consolidating wealth and passing privilege along at the expense of other people’s children. We are not innocent bystanders to the growing concentration of wealth in our time. We are the principal accomplices in a process that is slowly strangling the economy, destabilizing American politics, and eroding democracy."

It is about wealth distribution, and since we don't see it, are not responsible for it, we become immune to the net effects.

I see kids every day growing up. I follow them from birth to adulthood in my practice. I see the following pattern play out in real time over and over. Here's what blocks most of the kids I see  from making it financially as adults:

1. Their parents don't teach them about birth control...
2. Their parents don't stress college, and beyond that, they don't stress that whatever higher education a kid pursues...
3. Parents don't teach kids the laws of money...
4. Too many times, divorce snatches success away...
5. And last but not least, we have a culture where men... tend to not be interested in family....

Yep, yep, yep, yep (got the T-shirt),and yep.

What self-made men fail to realize are the structural advantages of being a white male in a society that values white maleness (and which finds black maleness a reason to call the cops, and for cops to summarily execute the perpetrator. This may not b e real for you and me, but it sure as shit is real for far too many of our fellow citizens.

And I can't speak for all the people in the "new aristocracy" but speaking for myself, I know damn good and well it's harder than it used to be. I don't need to see the stats. I know that the people who had the same job I have in the last generation had it easier than I do.

The post-war "greatest" generation got to live off the fat of the land. All the money was flowing to the FSoA, jobs were plentiful, and the money didn't lose five per cent of its buying power year to year. You are a little younger, but you came of age in the 60s and 70s, and until 1973, the US had its boot on the throat of the rest of the world. We called the tune. Then it all changed.

Why is that it's surprising that people who make LOW effort  are doing far worse? These articles make it seem like class warfare because young people can't just fall off the turnip truck and end up with money in the bank. I know it's hard. In the last generation it was far easier.

Why is it surprising that today's generation should have a tougher tome making a go of it  than you, when you had a tougher time of it than someone following the same career pat a generation earlier? I told my daughter this when she ws in high school: she is coming up in a much tougher society than the one I came up in. I graduated college with No debt. I'll bet you have a similar story. How many millennial can say the same? These decrying the $100,000 student debt for an art history degree are merely carrying water for those who, having ripped up access to education assistance for the children of the working class, wish to deny them access to self-improvement of any kind, the better to return them into mindless serfs who can work until they drop, then have the decency to die quickly.

OTOH, I completely agree that hard work generates its own reward. The people with the most "talent" are the ones who put in the most work/practice, e.g., LeBron, Jerry Rice, Antonio Brown, MJ, etc. What distinguished me from others earlier in my career was my willingness to work everybody else into the ground. It hasn't been until the last ten years or so that my attitude has become, "fuck that noise."

The days when someone with a high school diploma could go to work for Ford or GM or GE (where my Dad worked) and become middle class union factory laborers are long gone, and they aren't coming back. There are fewer jobs in general, the unions have all been busted, and more people lined up to try to get what jobs are there.

There is an absolutely brilliant, cogently written and lovingly crafted screed to this exact effect somewhere out there on the inter webs, if I could only remember where...

And I certainly agree. Miracles cost more these days, and don't buy what they used to.

What self-made men fail to realize are the structural advantages of being a white male in a society that values white maleness (and which finds black maleness a reason to call the cops, and for cops to summarily execute the perpetrator. This may not b e real for you and me, but it sure as shit is real for far too many of our fellow citizens.

I have no control over my whiteness. Everybody has to play with the cards they're dealt. All men are not created equal, and they're not even equal under the law, in spite of much rhetoric to the contrary. I see an awful lot of people, though, who take some pretty good cards on the draw, and still fold on the first raise.

Any hispanic kid in Texas whose parent is a military veteran can go to state college tuition free. I call that a decent card to draw. Many kids are taking advantage of that. I applaud them. If you get a break, you should take it. Overwhelmingly, though, they do not.

The graveyards in the south are filling up with privileged white people who are giving up. Evidently privilege ain't what it used to be either.

Fair enough. Meanwhile, in the rest of the country, white peepuls are clogging up 9-11 lines to report black people picnicking in a city park. Black skin makes many whites so uncomfortable they have to call the cops.

Here's another perspective.

Read This Before Calling the Police: For Wypipo Who Have Considered Cops When Privilege Wasn’t Enough

As one of the world’s foremost wypipologists, I have been tasked with addressing the newfound epidemic of Caucasian cop-summoners that just began trending around ... oh, I’m going to say it started in 1619, give or take a few days.

That’s correct. None of this shit is new. White people have always loved calling the police. In fact, in newly-unearthed ship logs from the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa Maria, researchers have discovered that upon landing in the New World, Christopher Columbus’ first words were:

“Hello 911? I’d like to report some Natives trespassing on the land I just claimed for Spain.”

But instead of dwelling on the past (because someone might mention slavery and make white people upset), I’d like to focus on the future. Because of all the shit they did in the past, wypipo have a great affinity for the future. If you don’t believe me, read the transcript of any Caucasian apology and I’m willing to bet that it says something about “moving forward.”

According to a 2016 Harvard University study I’m making up at this exact moment, 89.4 percent of all white people’s apologies contain the words “moving forward.” For them, “moving forward” is the equivalent of black people’s “Why you always bringing up old shit?”

Anyway, wypipo, although it is encoded in your DNA to dial a nine, a one and just wait for a nigga to do something, I’d like to suggest an alternative. I propose a five-step process that every white person should consider before calling the police on a black person.

Think about how many tax dollars you could save if police didn’t have to drive to the scene every time Amber thought something was suspicious about the Negro walking through her neighborhood. Imagine how much your city could save on overtime if officers didn’t have to spend hours writing up reports because Connor thought a crafty Negro had bought a uniform, stolen a mail truck and was cruising through your neighborhood, casing your subdivision, planning a series of home invasions by putting mail in people’s mailboxes.

Don’t you want lower taxes for Connor and Sarah?

Well, here is a plan you could follow. It shouldn’t be difficult to do because I gave it the easiest acronym to remember. It’s called the WHITE Method

Step 1: Wait

Now, I know this first step sounds ridiculous because you are very proactive, but I promise it will make sense if you hear me out. Here’s a novel idea:

How about waiting until the person actually commits a crime?

It might seem a little far-fetched, but what if Sarah Braasch had waited until that black woman who fell asleep on her dormitory couch woke up? Sure, Lolade Siyonbola might have been one of those rare Negro sleepwalking murderers, but what if she’d just wanted to take a goddamn nap?

Again, it might seem like a crazy notion. I’m just saying that it’s statistically within the realm of possibility that Siyonbola was sleepy. I’m not ruling out Braasch’s belief that the sleeping black woman had a long con that involved getting good-enough grades in undergrad to be accepted into an Ivy League graduate school where she planned to play possum on a couch until she was ready to jump-start the race war.

Step 2: Holla

This is the hardest step because it involves having an actual conversation with someone who isn’t white. Hold up! Before you skip this part, allow me to explain. Have you ever considered ... just once ... talking to a black person?

If Holly Hylton had hollered at those two homeboys in Starbucks, she surely wouldn’t have called the cops. (Try saying that fast three times. It’s the black version of: “The sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick.”)

Step 3: Imagine

I know it’s scary to see an actual black person in living color, but you should overcome your fear and replace it with logic. One way to do this is by imagining that the person is an actual human being and not a caricature or a stereotype. I know this might sound impossible, but imagine if the person on whom you called the police was behaving in the exact same way, but they were white.

Would they seem so nefarious then?

Another technique I recommend is to imagine the jolliest, happiest, most harmless Negro you know—like Oprah or that nigga who sings with Hootie & the Blowfish.

Would you call the police on Oprah? I know sympathy isn’t one of your natural inclinations and you could watch a lynching with a glass of lemonade in one hand and a parasol in the other, but think of the world,Carol Anne. What would we do with Stedman if Oprah was killed? Do you want to live in a world full of Blowfishes but no Hootie?

Hootie ain’t never did nothing to nobody!

Step 4: Think

Instead of using emotion, why not use logic?

Whenever white people want to criminalize black people, they love to point to the FBI’s murder statistics. Yes, it is true that African Americans commit murder at a higher rate than whites, but here’s an interesting fact:

If you looked at all crime, in any given year, white people commit the vast majority of crime. According to the FBI’s 2015 Uniform Crime Report (the latest available), white people committed twice as many rapes, assaults, burglaries, and almost every other crime that the FBI tracks. If you are worried about crime, it is far more likely that the perpetrator prefers hollandaise to hot sauce.

But even though the vast majority of crime in the U.S. (69.7 percent) is committed by whites, you still shouldn’t call the cops on people who are susceptible to sunburn (how are you the master race if light can kill you?) for one simple reason: A vaster (I think that’s a word) majority of people haven’t committed a single crime. Use your head and not your hollandaise-heavy heart.

Also, I don’t know what hollandaise is.

Step 5: Envision

The final step is to take a deep breath and envision the two competing endings to the heinous, imaginary crime foiled by your police call.

In the first scenario, think of what would happen if you didn’t call the police: Lolade Siyonbola continues to nap on the couch and nothing happens. Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson take up two seats in the Starbucks until their friend arrives and they all leave. Or stay. The black people continue their cookout. The Hobby Lobby customers return their items and leave. The black women leave the Airbnb.

The end.

On the other hand, envision what would happen if the cops shot Siyonbola like they shot sleeping 7-year-old Aiyana Jones? What if Nelson and Robinson ran out of Starbucks when the cops came and met the same fate as Stephon Clark? Imagine if police showed up to that cookout and fired a few bullets into the crowd like Dante Servin did when he shot Rekia Boyd? Your silly little 911 call could have turned Brian Spurlock into the Hobby Lobby version of Walmart’s John Crawford.

You do know they shoot black people, don’t you? Calling the police on black people when they have done nothing wrong is not just racist and insensitive, it is life-threatening.

Hopefully, we can end all of this by practicing the WHITE Method for not calling the police. And if any of this offends you, think of how offended an innocent black person feels when they are confronted out of the blue by men with guns known to shoot people who look like them.

Moving forward, I hope you can do better.
