One thing about this King and his vanity and extravagance still standing however is Versailles, not exactly a log cabin in the woods.

Probably the ugliest piece of architecture I ever visited.

No sane human would be King. You'd have to be power mad. It's a shitty trade, no matter how good the pay is, or how snazzy the clothes.

Is it really insane to follow one's own nature, or human nature more broadly? Power is certainly not the only passion we have, but it is one of them.

“The misunderstanding of passion and reason, as if the latter were an independent entity and not rather a system of relations between various passions and desires; and as if every passion did not possess its quantum of reason” ― Friedrich Nietzsche, The Will to Power

No doubt, heavy is the crown. But enough people, of all different temperaments and dispositions, have taken it on to make me think there is something very sane about it. Something that we could all fall prey to and rationalize given the right circumstances.

But there are many who are power mad, so no lack of candidates. I'm not talking about GO.

It's a bad assignment. Take it from one who should know.

Never meant to suggest it was a job for just anybody. Like most positions it fits only a few folks well, rather than many shall we say "ordinary" folk.   ;D

Is it really insane to follow one's own nature, or human nature more broadly? Power is certainly not the only passion we have, but it is one of them.

No doubt, heavy is the crown. But enough people, of all different temperaments and dispositions, have taken it on to make me think there is something very sane about it. Something that we could all fall prey to and rationalize given the right circumstances.

The karma of power, like the karma of fame, is really very much a two-edge sword.  You get some things and a life everyone dreams of having, but the costs are immense.

Not much freedom to go your own way, to love who you want and how you want, to have time for one's self and to engage in solitary pursuits.

I only know what great power looks like from my own rather distant perspective, but the further I get from it, the more comfortable I feel.

I'm saying, because we dont have much of it or we dont feel like we desire it, we shouldn't think it's not a part of us that can manifest in many circumstances.

We also tend to psychopathologize a lot of things in this culture which are more in the realm of basic human nature. I dont that has been a productive endeavor for the most part.

Well, power can be manifest in a lot of different ways. I do not consider myself powerless. Not at all.

On the contrary, I like to think of myself as someone fitting JP's definition of "meek"... Well-armed, but restrained.. LOL. It's been the model I've tried to follow most of my adult life, long before I heard of Dr. P...but he articulates it well.

I actually think of myself as a king....of my extended family. And as the sovereign force in my own life, the guy in charge of the "me" that is that community of people I am, the me of the here-and-now, and the me of various points of the timeline that is the future.

And I have a suspicion that I have had some past life experience of having had really great responsibility, that makes my personality shy away from that, because I truly get what it means to be king. I know it holds zero attraction for me. I suspect also that I might have been to the wars, because war is intuitively repugnant to me on a very visceral level. In this incarnation, I have not experienced it personally. But I feel somehow, that I have.

These are not things I really know, or would try to convince anyone (even me) that they are true to any degree of certainty. But I allow myself to have suspicions.
What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.

I wonder how many people who voted for Nunes even know he isn't hispanic, much less that his family farm moved to Iowa ten years ago.

It's another Ted Cruz situation. The name on the ballot is the message. No substitute for having the correct surname. Beto O'Rourke is smart to identify by his Beto nickname, in El Paso, and in his He should legally change his name to Beto, and then it'd be on the ballot, too. If he loses to Cruz, that will be at least a small but measurable factor.

How many voters these days decide who to vote for by reading the Fresno Bee anyway? FaceBook is where people get all their info. (Except for the more politically active, who get theirs from Twitter.)
