Andy Kroll badly misses the important point about Mattis and the other generals who are speaking out against Trump's attempt to put the military on US city streets.

If we go there, we in essence become another Egypt....and our Corona Spring will start to look a lot like the aftermath of their Arab Spring. People disappeared, loss of what's left of our civil rights, more suppression of dissent...on and on.

You don't have to worship Mattis or make him out to be other than what he is and/or was.....in order to applaud his stand here, against the maniacal demagogue Trump, who would be King.

I had been wondering when Mattis was going to break his much-ballyhooed "period of silence." So I was pleased that he spoke out, in a. week when five highly respected military men did likewise.

Kroll reminds us of what Mattis stands for. You don't get to be a general officer for empire without killing a few civilians along the way. Sad but true. A cautionary note for Vidal's "the United States of Amnesia."

Re: COVID Spike In Texas
« Reply #1432 on: June 07, 2020, 08:04:01 AM »
Thanks for posting that. I think we're definitely seeing a new uptick, my guess is that at least some of it is related to Memorial Day crowds and the bars re-opening about the same time.

There is more hocus-pocus going on with the numbers, My local county dashboard no longer sorts new cases by community spread vs.known exposure...which was a stat that seemed very useful to me....not sure why that was done, because the trend looked pretty good...down to very low levels for community spread.

Austin has enough community spread that any relaxation of social distancing is sure to cause a new spike...and we appear to be having one now. 46 new cases yesterday.

I don't think the protests have been going on long enough to cause a big spike in COVID cases by themselves, but every kind of high-risk behavior is still going to show up in the stats.

Maybe some of the details about where the hot spots are....are being withheld over privacy concerns, which is regrettable imho, because it''s very useful to know exactly where the hotspots and clusters are...and that information is hard to come by.

For me and my family I worry most about the area where I practice. My risk is there, because when I'm not working I am following the same protocol I did during the lockdown, and I'm spending most of my time at the lake, often completely alone. If I get sick, I don'e want to be some kind of super-spreader.

My opinion is that this pandemic can last longer than most people can remain vigilant, unfortunately...No evidence suggests to me that Texas has done more than slightly reduce the speed of propagation through the population. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 2nd wave as large or larger than the first one, and I think eventually a large portion of the population will be exposed, Something we aren't even close to yet.

People want this to   be over, many think it is nearly over...but it isn't even close to being over...and it could easily still get much worse than it has been to date. That's my take,

Not that anyone gives a shit, but the fact that cops are caught red handed beating up old men who are peaceful protestors and slashing the tires of innocent people... and pulling down the respiratory mask of a child and then spraying him with pepper spray..., etc., etc., has pretty much ruined the public relations image of police for all future and present time.  Cops have ruined the public image of cops so badly that the word "Police" must be abandoned for a new rebranding of whatever happens next.

We're beyond being in a mere political crisis (of "authority") in the USA. We're in a social and cultural crisis the likes of which we've not seen since the "Civil" War.   And we've seen all this before... in Seattle (WTO protests), during the Occupy "movement" (scare quotes because not a movement but a mushroom bloom of an underground mycelium complex which has been around far longer than "Occupy" .

I personally think Sylvester Stallone bears a great deal of responsibility.
