Title: DD Podcasts
Post by: RE on May 30, 2013, 10:36:04 PM
Diner Pocasts will be beginning in earnest here over the next few weeks.  Monsta is Producing his own Interview Show, and Haniel has sent in numerous of the Lectures from the Age of Limits 2013 Conference held over Memorial Day Weekend at 4 Quarters Interfaith Sanctuary in Pennsylvania.

The Albert Bates The Global Ecovillage Movement lecture from Age of Limits 2013 Conference held over Memorial Day Weekend is currently UP through Saturday.

Go to the Age of Limits 2013 board, the Podcast thread for announcements and discussion.

http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/forum/index.php?topic=1433.0 (http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/forum/index.php?topic=1433.0)

After this, I am going to more or less follow the actual schedule the lectures followed. Haniel got about 8 or so I think, including both of Gail’s and Mr. Wizard's.  They'll be up 2-3 days each.

I did not get are Carolyn Baker's.  Those were exercises around the process of grief and connection, and deeply personal to those present.  It would not have been respectful to record them.

I also did not get the Doomer lodge on tape since I was busy  8) but I have a feeling the concept, structure and ritual written to date is not going away...
Title: DD Monsta of Doom Podcasts: Saturday June 8, 2013 Launch Date
Post by: RE on June 03, 2013, 11:15:51 PM
OK Gang, looks like all the Technical Issues have been worked out now and Monsta has 5 Podcasts in the Can here already, though full post-production has not been finished on all of them yet.  This includes a 3 part Podcast from Yours Truly and a 2 part Podcast from Surly.

I have now figured out how to Embed said Podcasts on the Diner Blog, and beginning Saturday you will see a new Button on the Menu Bar on the Diner Blog for Podcasts.

The Schedule for the Podcasts in the Can are the first 2 Parts from me this Saturday, then the first part from Surly the next Saturday.  The Saturday after that remains up in the air, may be one from WHD or LD if one of those gets recorded here.  Gail from OFW also will do a Podcast with us sometime in the near future.

I listened to the first Part from Surly, and it sounds GREAT!  Almost as good as mine!  LOL.  I think Diners will find them interesting and informative, especially Newer Rookie Diners.  Even Veterans should enjoy them, as it is slightly different to Listen to the ideas in Discussion rather than Read them on the Page.

Definitely raises the overall level of the Diner Product of Doom.  Along with the coming DinerTV, we stay at the Leading Edge of Techno-Wizardry Collapse Blogging on the Net!  :icon_mrgreen:

OK!  I got the Intro Article written for the first 2 Podcasts, due to go up Saturday.  This is an Event not to be Missed Diners!  Monsta has got final files here about ready, we created a new Monsta of Doom email account and all the protocols are set.

This is gonna be FUN!  :icon_mrgreen:

Title: DD Podcasts: GRAND OPENING!
Post by: RE on June 06, 2013, 11:16:07 PM
All the Details have been worked out and we are set to ROCK the world of DOOM!

I already have up the PODCAST (http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/blog/podcasts/) page on the Diner, currently Featuring a lecture from Gail the Actuary from the Age of Limits Conference.  Unlike some Blogger who shall remain Nameless, Gail is very HAPPY to have her shit published anywhere she can.  Hell, she even publishes on Biz Insider.  LOL.

Saturday the 1st 2 from me go up, then Surly then it goes from there as the Podcasts (http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/blog/podcasts/) get recorded and Monsta gets them Ready For Prime Time.  He's already done another one with WHD, GM & LD he told me, though not yet through Post Production.

This is an IMPORTANT Weekend to go out and PLUG THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF THE DOOMSTEAD DINER!  Head out there onto your favorite Doom Websites and drop in a LINK for our Podcasts. (http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/blog/podcasts/)

SAVE AS MANY AS YOU CAN!

Forgive me, I am a bit lost over the new podcast thread as usual.  Are we supposed to post any commentary about the podcasts here,  just listened to Gails and it was clear and worked beautifully, or are we supposed to post comments on the comment box which appears under the podcast.?

Are Diners going to be able to post favored podcasts or links to them on this thread or will it be a different one?

I really enjoy this type of venue for long involved presentations as it affords the listener the luxury of lying down and resting ones eyes from the computer screen and allowing more  contemplation. The ability to go back and re- listen to a section is also a very appealing aspect of this venue.

Thanks to all involved for what appears to be a very successful launch.

At the moment, we are housing the Podcasts on Soundcloud, a Web Freebie if you know how to use it right.  You CAN place comments on the Soundcloud site, but I for one will not be monitoring those comments.  If you want to chat up anything that is discussed in one of the Podcasts, the place to do it is here inside the Diner on the Podcast Board.  You can start your own Threads here as well as any I or Monsta might create in tandem with a given Podcast.

Quote

Because we are currently using the Freeby on Soundcloud, only a limited number of Podcasts will be up on that site at any given time. Based on the length we are working with for Monsta of Doom Podcasts, about 4 might be available at any given time.  They run about 1/2 hour each, and 2 hours is the Max for the Freeby Account on Soundcloud.  For as long as they are UP, your Links to them will work, but after a month or so they will no longer work.  Monsta and I have all the original MP3 files, and will rePodcast occasionally some of them but overall they are time limited on the Web.  I may house them all on the Diner Natively at some point, but this is Bandwidth Consumptive to do, so unless the Diner is MAKING MONEY, I won't do that.

So far, so good.  Another advantage for many folks is you can Listen while Driving, nice for the Morning Commute and so forth.  Besides that, lots of folks just don't LIKE reading much, so Audio works better for them and can bring the MESSAGE to more people.

Can't WAIT for your Review of the first Monsta of Doom Shows GO.  That should be entertaining in itself.  LOL

Thanks RE, Clears it up somewhat. Appeared to be two separate threads with the same name.

How do you listen in  a car?  I just bought an Apple I pad mini so I could bring the podcast channel upstairs to my bedroom for listening, would that work in a car also?

No I would need internet access everywhere I was driving, so do you download the podcast to the device somehow and listen that way.?

At the moment, you would need 4G Wireless internet to listen in the car.  We are not at the moment providing the MP3s for Download to be listened to while not Web Connected.

However, Diner Mods and assorted Highly Valued Diners can request from me or Monsta the original MP3, with the proviso that you only use it for yourself and don't pass it on to others.  It is our "Intellectual Property".  LOL.

Title: DD Podcasts: Doom on MP3
Post by: RE on June 07, 2013, 09:21:25 AM
Several of the Diner Mods have PMed me requesting that our Podcasts are made available on MP3, so you can Load it onto your Ipod or other Music/Audio device while Driving or Jogging or Fucking or whatever else it is you are doing that keeps you away from your Trusty Laptop.  LOL.

The Podcasts WILL be available to Diner Subscribers on MP3 as we move forward here with the project.  Rome was not built in a Day however, and we are still in Launch Phase and making sure everything is working right and collecting good material to use for Podcasts.  As EVERYBODY KNOWS, one of the things I hate most is getting caught with my pants down on the techy end.  Peter and I worked very hard to make this Platform the best one on the Net for Doom Discussion, and the move into Audio is a very big step all round, and I am trying to do it carefully so as not to fuck up too bad here.  LOL.

There will be Updates here in the Podcast thread as we engineer it to make available the MP3s for those who want to download them to various listening devices.  Cut me some slack here folks, and give it some time.  PATIENCE!  I've been slaving at Collapse for years now, and while yea it might all Collapse before everything comes together perfectly, it still makes no CFS to pull the Bread out of the Oven before the Baking is done.  Personally I like my Bread nice and Fluffy on the Inside with a good Chewy Crust on the Outside.  With Luck and Good Planning, this is how the Podcasts should come out.

What's the Over/Under for Listens on these Podcasts by the end of the Weekend?

Post by: RE on June 07, 2013, 11:28:51 PM
I just figured out you can Customize the Graphic that goes to the Left of all the Embeds, and added a Diner Graphic with our URL on it!

So now, anyone who picks up one of these Podcasts and Embeds on their Website (like Dmitry) AUTOMATICALLY ends up Plugging the Diner!  The graphic I created took a piece of our Header and I added the URL at the bottom.  Not a Hot Link, but at least people see where the originating URL is.

Wish I had figured this out before getting into the argument with Dmitry about Linking to the Diner.  Oh well, live and learn.

Have just had the pleasure of listening to our second podcast with Monsta and RE, it was wonderful and a chance to meet both gents on a more personal note.

A few things I found to be surprising, RE's not becoming aware of our plight until the Bear Stearn's collapse, and the very hard to understand fact that RE became aware of our monetary situation through the work of Anatal Fekete, a true genius and pillar of the Gold bug community. Have read all of his works and long consider him one of my mentors as well as his students.

The fact of being unaware until the Bear Stearn's collapse becomes more understandable upon realizing you were not in the financial field at the time, but how you were awakened by Professor Fekete, and did not become an ardent Gold bug is mystifying.

On the technical side the theme song Everybody Knows fits well and suggest it should be the theme song on all our podcasts. Did not care as much for the Neal Young blast ending, thought it was rather too loud and lengthy and detracted, just  a personal taste issue.

Praises and accolades to Monsta for all his hard devoted work, and excellent job as interviewer. It is already obvious to me that this new venue of the Diner has much to offer and great potential.    :icon_sunny:

Antal Fekete got me started, but over time I found his analysis to be somewhat thin.  He did write some real good stuff on debt though, which is thought provoking and I recommend to anyone interested in Monetary Issues to read Antal Fekete's work.  He has tons up on the net.  He's a Gold Bug Extraordinaire, you might call him the Father of All Gold Bugs.  LOL.

Been a LOOOONG road since I read "The Twilight of Irredeemable Debt", and while I do not agree with Antal Fekete's belief system in Gold as a final arbiter of wealth, I still do give him credit for making me look at the questions more closely.

If the Podcasts continue to do well through the end of this month, I am going to fork over for a Pro Account on Soundcloud with the Doomstead Diner.  It costs $99/year, not bad.

The Pro Account is unlimited, so ALL the Podcasts will be up there, as well as the most recent available on the Monsta of Doom account.

The Pro account allows you to make the files Private, so this will be Members Only.  I will set the account so Members can D/L the Podcasts.

The Pro Account also offers Full Stats, which tell you not only how many are listening, but also where they are.  This will finally enable us to get a better idea how many real people read/listen to the Diner.

At the moment I am not setting a Price on this, I'll wait to see what the requests are and what the demand is.

Will appreciate Donations after I set up the account to help defray the costs.

My suggestions: leave the most recent podcast (maybe two) available for anyone to listen to, streaming only, no download.  This way people know what they're getting, and they can try to keep up, but sooner or later they're going to miss one that they really wanted to hear.  Also, if you do have 'a la carte' pricing for the podcasts, I would still have anyone who ponies up the $100 for the SUN project get the podcasts for free.

We should have 3-4 up on the Monsta of Doom site as freebies all the time.

Indeed, the $100 SUN  :icon_sunny: Project contribution buys anyone Unlimited Downloads from the Doomstead Diner Soundcloud site once I buy the Pro Package.  I should also be able to A La Carte offer individual Podcasts at say $1 each on MP3 based on the way I think the Pro Package works.

On another note, the D/L stats now are 50 for Podcast 2, 75 for Podcast 1.  Expressed as a Decimal, that is .666.    :icon_mrgreen:

I finally got around to listening to the interviews with RE and Surly. I found them to be excellent, both in the quality of Monsta's questions and in the responses, which I felt were well articulated, as well as sound and sensible in content.

(Applause)

It's very interesting, to me, to hear the particular sources and circumstances that led both of you (RE and Surly) to become aware of collapse, Peak Oil, OWS, and the Doomer Blogosphere...the timeline, the way your behavior and consciousness has been affected since you started reading and writing on these subjects.

My own story isn't that different. I started out as a guy who saw the potential in gold investing when spot was about $400. And it was the best of the market blogs that pointed me toward the instability in the financial world, a couple of years prior to the 2008 collapse. Through them I got acquainted with the great videos of Damon Vrabel, before he gave up on blogging.

At Christmas time in 2010, my daughter had an unfortunate rock-climbing accident, and as a result I took my yearly ski vacation without her or her mother (so that we didn't have to cancel the trip for the other 6 or 8 people who had planned to go), while she was in the hospital. I didn't feel much like skiing, so I read a book I'd brought along, which was Mike Ruppert's "Collapse". After that, the pieces sort of fell into place.

I was also influenced a great deal by that old curmudgeon, Howard Ruff. It was he who made me feel that I should be doing some prepping, on the off chance that something bad might happen without notice...From there it's been a short few years to where we are now.

Thanks, guys, for sharing your stories. Thanks, Monsta, for some great interview work.

Thanks for the support to everyone it is greatly appreciated! One of these day it maybe an idea to do an interview with you Eddie. I think a topic about medicine in a post-collapse world would be an interesting topic to debate and I feel it is something that is not covered enough in the collapse blogosphere. Now I understand you are not a doctor but a dentist however I feel you could offer some good insights in how your profession and the wider medical profession will fair in the coming decades. More important though you can perhaps offer some advice on what you think is the best course of action for aspiring dentists/doctors should train in.

Monsta and Surly, the podcast was just splendid!

How nice to meet Surly though the medium of voice, as in his writings the voice of sanity, reason, and compassion.

Monsta you are turning into a first class interviewer, your predicament on the housing situation caused me to do some serious thinking about where we are in the fantasy land of paper.

Surly you are correct in my view, the shooting of JFK was the turning point for sure. Remember that day as vividly as if it were yesterday. Nothing has ever been the same since that dreadful evil day.  :(

Just got off Skyping with Monsta and Guy for yet another AWESOME Diner Podcast.  Well, PODCASTS, since the conversation went a good 90 minutes or so.  It will be broken up into 2 parts, the first part covers the technical issues of Climate Change, 2nd part focuses on Guy's personal life history and philosophy.  So these podcasts will be somewhat longer than the ones we put up previously.

Monsta is going to try to have the first part ready for Publication tomorrow, together with my Sunday Brunch article for this week, PLAGUE!  The interview and the article dovetail nicely, so Sunday is a DO NOT MISS day here on the Diner!

Title: DD Podcasts: When the Going Gets Weird, the Weird Turn Pro
Post by: RE on June 15, 2013, 05:59:01 PM
I forked over for a year of UNLIMITED UPLOADS to Soundcloud on the Doomstead Diner account to house all the Podcasts we create.

We are now PROS on Soundcloud!

Anybody who wishes to also Fork Over a few buckolas to help defray these costs and maybe even provide a small Stipend to Monsta for all his work will be much appreciated.  My costs so far were a bit over $100 at current exchange rate with the Euro.  Donating via the email address removes the charge of 3% PayPal takes when you use the Donate Button, so that is the preferred method.

Current Podcasts on the Monsta of Doom Soundcloud account will remain there for a while.  I wanna keep track of the numbers.  When I move them, the numbers will all drop back to Zero on the DD Account.

Part II of Guy McPherson's Podcast now UP on Diner Soundcloud and found now on the PODCAST (http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/blog/podcasts/) page on the Diner Blog!

Most interesting to me in this portion of the Podcast is his very mechanistic, random explanation for the Existence of the Universe (or Universes).

Post by: RE on June 18, 2013, 12:45:18 PM
We are doing a Podcast this Friday with Gail the Actuary from Our Finite World.  Topics will be Credit and Energy of course, though I may pitch some Anthropology at her also.  LOL.

Anyhow, if you have any questions you would like Monsta to drop in the script for this Podcast, drop them here in the thread or PM them over to Monsta.

RE,
I sent my hot potatoes for Gail to Monsta.

Basically I want to see how she responds to this article:

The Breakthrough Institute – Why The Hot Air?
  http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/forum/index.php?topic=1489.msg25443 (http://www.doomsteaddiner.net/forum/index.php?topic=1489.msg25443)

If she dances and claims it is a "groundless conspiracy theory", then she will expose herself as a shill for the nuke people. If not, then I might review my LOW opinion of her understanding of energy and civilization.  :icon_mrgreen:
Title: DD Podcasts: Widget Customization
Post by: RE on June 25, 2013, 01:09:37 AM
I have been messing with the Soundcloud (https://soundcloud.com/doomstead-diner) Account to see what is possible in terms of Plugging the Diner.

I found the descriptions take a little bit of HTML, so you can Hot Link in these back to the appropriate Diner Thread for discussion.

I also added Links to Diner FacePalm (https://www.facebook.com/DoomsteadDiner)and Diner TV (http://www.youtube.com/user/DoomsteadDiner) (You Tube).

Far as the Widgets go, you can't put a direct Hotlink in with those, but you can adjust the Title to Advertize the Diner.  I adjusted the Title in my Guillotine Podcast to do just that.

Overall, if we do good Podcasts that other websites pick up and Embed the Widgets, this should be an excellent Save As Many As You Can Ad Medium for the Diner.  :icon_mrgreen:

Title: Kollapsnik Radio Call In Talk Show
Post by: RE on April 07, 2015, 05:17:53 PM
I am currently working on getting a Collapse Call In Radio Show on the Air, at least over the net.

I've more or less figured out how the livestream system works, but in order to put it together with Skype I will need an Audio Mixer (KACHING!), and then I don't think I can both do the audio engineering and chat at the same time.

So I am going to see about partnering with a local Radio Station to get a Live version going.

Until then,  I'm going to try to do a kludge version which won't be live, and maybe experiment with this with Gail when she gets back from China.

I'm also may try doing open chats on Google Hangouts on a more regular basis for anyone to join and chat.

I have a lot of time on my hands these days.  ::)

Title: Add a Theme Song to your Signature on the Diner!
Post by: RE on April 08, 2015, 06:43:01 AM
I have discovered how to add Theme Music into the Signature at the bottom of all your posts.

As you folks know, my Main Tag Line is SAVE AS MANY AS YOU CAN, and it appears at the bottom of all my posts.

The field there for your Signature will take html if you use the ]htm[ & ]/html[ (reverse the brackets) enclosure.

Use the Embed code for html from the Music Site you get the music from.

My Theme Song as Everybody Knows, is EVERYBODY KNOWS by Leonard Cohen. Thanks to Alex for dropping this on Spreaker. :icon_sunny:

Monsta and I just finished knocking off another 2 Podcasts, which I was feeling great about until I got off Skype and checked in at the Diner to find Haniel dropped a QP on the board.  Now I am thoroughly depressed again.(http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Sad/sad-012.gif)

I don't get why people quit when they get in disagreements, which I guess is my problem.  I'm so used to arguing with everybody I just don't perceive it the way everybody else does.  I really LIKE Haniel, and I found his perspectives interesting and informative.  If a Jerk Quits the board it doesn't bother me at all, but when somebody like Haniel quits, its like a piece of my soul gets taken away.  I get an empty hole in me and I sink into a depression every time it happens.

I sent Haniel a couple of emails, but I wouldn't be surprised if he put my email addy into his SPAM filter.  So there may be no way to fix what is broken here.(http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Sad/sad-023.gif)

Anyhow

“All men are created equal.”  Some people think that is a fine sentiment; some people think that is a bald-faced lie.  But in one sense, it is an absolute, immutable law of nature: in the sense that, for each and every single day, each and every single one of us gets exactly 24 hours — 1440 minutes — 88640 seconds to spend.  Now if I were to add “exactly how we wished”, that would be a lie, but unless we are imprisoned or enslaved, we generally do have some say over how we spend those minutes.  So the question becomes, how do we live on 24 hours a day?  Because no matter how rich we are, we can’t buy ourselves another second personally, the best we can to is give someone money to spend their time doing what we want them to do.  And no matter how poor we are, we all still get the same allotment of minutes every day, even if some of our options of what to do with them are limited.

One thing we can do to make the most of our time is to learn things while we are waiting for others.  Audiobooks and podcasts can be a great option, as MP3 players are small enough to carry with you everywhere and can be purchased very inexpensively.  And if we have a smartphone, we don’t even need a separate piece of equipment.  Many podcasts are available for free; audiobooks can get expensive, but one way you can get them for free is if the author has been dead for a century.  Arnold Bennett wrote a book to answer the question of How to Live on 24 hours a Day (https://librivox.org/how-to-live-on-24-hours-a-day-version-2-by-arnold-bennett/) and the folks at Librivox have made it available for free.  The language may be a bit stilted to our modern ears, but the knowledge contained therein still has relevance to today’s world.

I spend most of my 24 hours these days writing.  Haven't done a Podcast in a while.  Talking about doing one with the new Steve from SRSRocco Report though.

Far as listening to audio books, I haven't done much of that.  They were around on cassettes when I was trucking, but usually while driving I just listened to the music on the radio and let my mind wander where it would.

More sleep is good.

Only up to a certain point.... having a power nap is a great idea, but not if you're driving  :o

From the research I've been doing for the RAIN initiative, it looks like beyond 20 minutes naps are not that helpful.  What is more important is getting sleep before midnight: that's when melatonin is produced.  It's said 1 hour of sleep before midnight is worth 2 hours afterward.  Also, sleeping soundly in the beginning of the night, then resting quietly but awake in the middle, and falling back asleep for the end of the night appears to be a more natural pattern.

I believe I have the links for the articles discussing the above stored on my FB page but I don't have time to look them up right now.

Oh. I believe you. No need to put up links.

It's just that Monday I spent four hours driving to Dallas, then spent seven hours with my tax accountant (we ate lunch on his desk), and then spent six hours driving back, because I sat in a traffic jam for an hour and then I had to take a detour to feed the pigs on the way home. Last night I hit the sack around eleven, but my ass is still dragging. Sleep seems like a precious commodity right now. I need to go to bed earlier tonight. Bring on the melatonin. Bring on the REM sleep.
