Title: Diner 2nd Anniversary Party
Post by: RE on January 23, 2014, 02:40:05 AM
The Diner 2nd Anniversary is coming up February 17th.

I will be holding an Anniversary Party on Google Hangouts on Sunday February 16th (17th already in Oz on Monday) to Celebrate this Occasion.
:multiplespotting:   :partytime2:

If your Laptop currently will not handle Google+ and the Hangouts, you have nearly a full month to figure out why and get yourself up to Tech Speed here.  If there is a hardware issue and you need some equipment, let me know.  If you are Poor I will send you a mic or webcam.

NO EXCUSES!  BE THERE OR BE SQUARE!

We will discuss the Evolution of the Diner over the last 2 years, and the Future Plans for SUN  :icon_sunny: and PEN.

BYOB.

BTW. there are only 10 Seats available at the Live Party.

I am pretty sure Monsta, LD/GM and JD will attend, as they already have participated on Google Hangouts.  Pretty sure Haniel can figure out the Tech.  This leaves 6 seats at the table.

Priority given to Diner Admins, after that it is Seniority as a Diner Mod to get you IN.

RSVP here in the thread if you will make the Show.

Ugh, I am working until 5 PM EST that day, and it takes me 30 minutes to get home (if the weather is good), so I will be, as they say, fashionably late...

5PM EST = 1PM Alaska Time.

I don't figure to get rolling much before 3PM Alaska Time, 7PM EST.

No issues here.

I would like to respectfully object to the policy of Admins given first priority and then Mods. It reeks to me of the perks and power hierarchy that exists in the world outside of the Diner, the world we are trying to improve in our own way, as well as centralized corrupting  power.

Let me state emphatically that my intent is not to start a bickering session, or to throw out a negative wave, it is merely my opinion that the Diner should give equal access to all it's membership to events. I hope the party is a great success.

Will non geeks like me be able to listen in on the proceedings with a simple desktop? The posting mentioned laptops and perhaps special equipment needed. Would like to be able to listen in and enjoy the proceedings. Any instructions before hand would be most welcome.  :icon_scratch:

I will BRIEFLY un-SHUN you to respond to this Post from the Ghost.

You actually have very High Priority as a Mod with MUCHO Posting, so you would be the first to go in after the Admins.  There are 7 Admins, Me, Surly, Haniel, WHD, Monsta, Eddie & Peter. Peter is unlikely to show. LD/GM likely as Mods.  JD likely to show.  This leaves roughly 2 spots open, and if you want to, nobody has more Seniority than you do so you would be included.

If you do not join, the Party will go up for viewing as soon as I close the Vidcast, and be up for viewing on You Tube.

Hangouts only allows for 10 people, so there has to be prioritization here.  Those who contribute to the diner most get priority.  You are one of those people, despite the fact your contributions are mainly Negative Waves.

Thank you for your reply.

I should have been more specific, yes I did realize mods like myself had status in the situation.

My concern went out to our members who are not major contributors by volume or are regulars hanging out at the diner, but are valued by us a well for there valuable but infrequent support. Many are busy with their own situations and make valuable contributions when they are able.

May I name a few prominent in that group of our regular membership to illustrate my point.

Buzzard, Snowleopard, Bot Blogger, Publius whose quote of the month appears on our heading is another. Personally I feel they should be included as well as any of our members who wish to participate. Ugo Bardi has posted very little but should certainly be extended an invitation as well.

My thought was a representation from all three groups would be fairer, Admins, Mods, General membership. Hopefully the top notch postings the mentioned members have made will illustrate my concern at leaving that group out.

Perhaps a slot system, should it be needed, could address my concern. 3 Admin slots, 4 Mod slots, and 3 General membership slots as merely a suggestion. or 2 admin, 4 Mods, 4 General, to more fairly represent their numbers, there are all sorts of ways to accomplish this. Even  a simple everyone throwing in their name by a certain date and have a draw of 10 names.

Thanks again for your reply, I appreciate the brief recognition. I am trying my utmost to be Casper The Friendly Ghost

10 seats @ Google Hangouts? Sounds like a clusterfuck to me. I would be a part of it, but my $1100 System 76 Ubuntu Linux computer does not have a camera. Hey tech geeks - what would it cost to purchase one that was worth it?

Hell William, I was thinkin' about this the other day.  They have a 10 dollar wireless mouse at Best Buy.  I was like, htf myself???  Cause I mean 10 bucks gets that thing made with all it's materials, shipped from China or wherever the fuck, put on the shelf, and then sold.  Seems like it would take at least 10 bucks worth of shit to build one wireless mouse.  I don't know shit about wireless mouse tech, but damn...do they use fuckin' pixie dust or some shit?  And got a pixie slave factory?  Are they loosing money?

A little over 2 weeks between now and the PAHHTY!

Get your $20 WEBCAM now and test it out!

I think I will book a local Hotel Room to run the party from instead of the Cafe so I can do some Dancing.  :icon_mrgreen:

I think doing some Poetry Reading might be fun.  Pick out a Favorite Poem to read.  Or we can do a Karaoke Contest!   :icon_mrgreen:

My Singing ALWAYS improves after 5-6 pops. Doesn't yours?

I'll be hooking up to Google Hangouts sometime Sat Late Afternoon-Evening my time.  I may periodically Start and Stop recordings, each time I do that I will need to start a New Hangout with a New Link.  I will post up the New Link here in this thread each time I do this.

I will also send out Email Links to a few of our Cross Posting Friends, to see if maybe they show up for a while to Party Down with us also.  Specifically, I will send links to Gail, David, Ugo, Albert, John, George, Paul and Ringo.  OK, no Ringo Cross Poster yet. LOL.

As added INCENTIVE for showing up at the PAHHTY, I am adding 2 more Karaoke Hits to my Repertoire, I will also do Tennessee Ernie Ford's 16 Tons, and Jimmy Dean's Big Bad John.  :icon_mrgreen:

I am picking an Octave range here I generally can hit OK without being too Off-Key.  LOL.

Anybody else gonna Karaoke with me?  What are your songs?

I will not Karaoke until I have at least a 6 Pack of Sam Adams under my belt.  :icon_mrgreen:

Adding songs?  That's an incentive?

I'm one of the few Welshmen who cannot carry a tune even with a fork lift.  I have been known to break into a drunken rendition of "The Woad Song" along with a certain Archdruid, when the single malt had flowed quite freely...

Don't make me send the wife around to shut off the music.  She's flying up there Saturday.  :icon_mrgreen:

soooo, no way I'm participating in Karaoke.

Last time I did Karaoke was probably before I was married, and it would have been at a bar, drunk.

However, listening to RE sing Karaoke will likely be highly entertaining.  However, it also would likely result in me disappearing.

But pahhty on dudes :icon_sunny:

I'll be sure to have plenty of beer on hand.

Hi RE: So I watched your party and got to know five of you a little better. Could not agree more with yours and Roamer's discussion of collapse and similarities with Detroit of large parts of the US. I did a pretty thorough search one and two years ago over the internet with lots of google pictures and was really appalled and scared off. When ever {No matter what state} I found something affordable but then googled the surroundings it was depressing as hell. Something about this country makes it downright uncivilized just about everywhere and I guess that's because it is. Frankly, you can tell Surly, that I'm sure Wetico is what has done this to a once beautiful wide open sacred land of Nature now destroyed by greed and materialism. I wanted to hear more about what William had to say on this divide between the Sacred and the Profane, but the words were just not that clear. I hope later. The idea of gathering souls through the internet is also a good one. Karpatok

GM and I are about 30 minutes away from adult time.

We'll be trying the latest link once the kids are in bed...is another way of saying it.

I really hate that we missed lastnight.  I'd have loved to participate with both William and Roamer at the same time.  I guarantee it will at least be funny as hell when it finally happens.

But we'll try the link soon.

The connection was breaking up too bad by then.  No way to get a complete recording.

We'll get it done at the Convocation.  Also hopefully get the Instrumental Track recorded so I don't come out A Capella on the Video.   :icon_sunny:

Definitely an entertaining evening though, and I am glad the portion with Surly did actually take in the end.  It's up on the Homepage, and the Thumbnail for it is you and Roamer which gives a nice Youthful Appearance to the Diner as opposed to the Old Fogeys me & Surly.   :icon_sunny:

I couldn't watch most of it, the links keep sending me to Apple Apps store and I did not know what to do. I put my tablet down got out of bed and came downstairs to my desktop computer and was able to see Roamer WHD Surly Haniel and RE perfectly, nice clear images and sound.

I came into the party not expecting too much and within seconds upon arriving was absolutely thrilled at the medium. What a wonderful experience to meet some of our Diners. To meet them personally, hear them talk, watch their mannerisms and facial expressions, it was just wonderful. Surly, you have the face of wisdom, Roamer and WHD it was just great to see you guys and hear about your plans in person, Haniel what a pleasure to meet you and hear that fabulous accent in your speech, I will always hear it now when I read your postings. Nice going RE, it was a pleasure to meet everyone. My only bitch is not being able to get the other stuff only that specific interview. It's tough not being a computer geek like you younger guys. Dunces like me need a link to click on where it just appears like the interview did.

BTW, what you needed to do at that point to join in was to Download the Apple App that works with Google+.  Had you done that, you could have joined the chat I suspect, since the Ipad has the necessary hardware built in.

For Next Time, download the Google+ App to your Ipad and I think it will be pretty EZ for you to join in the fun.  :icon_sunny:

Thanks, If I have a problem, my 14 year old grandchild in Maine will set it up for me. He does that stuff all day and doesn't even think about it, just comes natural to him.

Are you aware that they give a free Apple I Pads to all the Kids in Maine from for Junior high up now? Just amazing, they use them in class and even do homework on them. Boy oh Boy has the world ever changed from when I was a kid.

I have the face of a meatcutter, but thanks anyhow, GO. Fully agree that the Google Hangouts bit of tech is great fun. And there is something about meeting and talking face to face with some of your correspondents that is really joyful.

By all means, get a grandchild to hook you up. I'm halfway tech-aware for an old guy, but I can hand my phone to my daughter and be amazed at what that "digital native" can get it to do.

Let's not wait another two years.

yeah, GM and I will watch it to.  We both thought it was today for some reason?

Life has been hectic for us lately.
I made the same mistake.  Not that it really mattered, Sunday was my busiest day of the year, over 6 hours of back-to-back clients in the tax office, I couldn't really afford to stay up late.  And my work schedule was set before RE made the first announcement.  More importantly, by the time I got on and realized my mistake, I had already taken my daily migraine medication, after which I can not stay awake for love nor money.  Yes, coffee would keep me awake, and then promptly give me a migraine.  Still, I would have shown up for an hour or two at least had I realized my error earlier.

To that end, shall we plan on doing the same thing next year?  The second weekend of February is Saturday the 14th and Sunday the 15th.  I'm assuming the answer is yes, so I already have it in my Google calendar to schedule my time at Block around it next year.

Pencil it in, but NEXT YEAR is pretty far down the Pipe here.  Long as the Net is still UP; long as the Boys in the Black Cadillac Escalades have not come to ship me off to GITMO; long as I am not yet pushing up Daisies,  I'll run an Anniversary PAHHTY on the Diner.

We'll have another opportunity here to Celebrate as Diners when the Convocation takes off.  Even the Techno-Challenged like Eddie will be there then, since both Haniel and myself will be there with the right Toys to make it work.

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE.  Weekend of April 5, 2014.  Pencil it in.

LOL naturally all the standard Doom disclaimers apply when talking a year out... but if I don't put it in my calendar now, I will have forgotten it by the beginning of next January when I really need it.

And thank you for the reminder about the weekend of April 5th... I knew that that was coming up, but wasn't thinking that I would be able to participate virtually, even though you had said about having a wi-fi connection.  Luckily, that weekend I'm working Saturday and not Sunday, so while I may be a little late and frazzled, I should be able to sleep in the next day.

I want to try gotomeeting for a session. We won't be able to record it, but if the quality is much better, then the software to record it is around $ 100.

We had a gotomeeting subscription for our sales managers, we dropped it last October to give Hangouts a try - we reinstated the gotomeeting after a few weeks because the quality was so much lower.

Pick a data and time on a weekend (it may be in use during normal office hours) , I'll set up the meeting and post the invite here.  People will need a gotomeeting client on their device, so I'll bring up the bridge about ten minutes before the start time.  Once all are in, I can hand control over to whoever wants to "present".

The level of collaborative interaction is far higher on gotomeeting, we can review powerpoint, watch videos together, record all except the video conferencing streams for individuals, which is an after-market product.

Limit is 25 people at a time.

I'll be happy to try the GTM alternative, though if everyone needs client software installed on their computer it seems like this would only be useful internally for the Diners.  Say I invite Albert Bates to join a meeting, will he need to download software for this?

You actually can review powerpoints and so forth on Hangouts through the Screenshare tool.  In the end I think the problems are all about Bandwidth.  When Monsta and I were chatting yesterday, we had a fabulous connection and it worked great.  Unfortunately only JD showed up and nobody was drinking so we didn't record.  LOL.

It's a simple web client.  Set a date and time (this weekend) or an evening (after 6pm PST) and we'll give it a go.  Bandwidth is a factor, but not the only one.  We have a fiber to the building, still found hangouts to be significantly slower and buggy than GTM.

Hey, don't forget, Gypsy Mama and LD showed up too... we just had a lot of trouble hearing them.

I have limited experience with GTM, but it is what Northwood Realty uses for technical support.  I found it quite easy to install the client and the software was pretty transparent.  It was almost as good as having the tech guy in the room with me.

Guy and I have much more in common than we do in terms of difference of opinion.  We both are trying to get people to see that culturally speaking we are in a World of Shit.  The general difference is that Guy is 99% convinced this will end in Extinction for HS, I am not so convinced.

Anyhow, besides me, Guy just published Bud Nye's Attitude post, and Bud's opinion is not that different than my own, though he seems to be more working on the Rewilding paradigm than the Scavenging paradigm I consider to be the most effective methodology over the medium term here.

The active comentariat here is very fanatical in belief in NTHE, but Guy while pretty convinced of this himself is not pitching out just this spin on the website here.  He presents alternative views as he sees fit, because it is HIS fucking website, not YOURS.  LOL.

Indeed in their own way, these folks are as vile as Smokey and A-hole on TBP.

It is alas my Destiny in Life on the Internet to go out and Do Battle with the Forces of Evil.

And no, I don't sleep that much.  LOL.

I only popped in because RE mentioned it at the party; you can see from the number of posts I don't bother hanging out over there.  I'm friends with Guy on facebook, and he can message me there if there's technical problems, but other than that, I don't go over there.

RE, on the other hand, has the tolerance for trolls that I do not, and there are going to be visitors to NBL that are more suited for the sitting down to a decent meal in the diner than being hooked up to a bag of disparium in hospice care.  Let food be thy medicine.  The forum will drive anyone with an ounce of positive thoughts away, and hopefully over to here.

Even my tolerance wears thin after a while.  I get active whenever Guy cross posts one of my Blogs to defend my POV.  I generally do not participate on any other threads, unless one of the Trolls brings up my name or continues an argument from one of my threads.

The NBL Irreversibility thread was an Overflow thread from an earlier article of mine I put up in the Forum after Guy closed the Commentary on the Blog.  Generally speaking, UF, Lidia, Grant, BS and AL are the main Trolls who drop in to keep the Negativity going.

We will get a New Round when Guy drops on my Emerging Markets article. Sometime next week I think as he runs around a 3 day Feature and the article is 2 or 3 down in the queue.

I stay with it because as Haniel notes, anybody who is not Obsessively Depressed who drops in over there will go looking for something at least marginally more upbeat.

I actually have hooked up over there with BKPR, the Bee Keeper dude who is going to write some Bee Keeping stuff for SUN.  Also another fellow Bugsy is trying to hook us up with Terry Kok (http://earthnightcelebration.com/portfolio/terry-patricia-kok/), who is trying to build a sustainable community in southern Indiana called Fairie Hill.

So while the Trolls take Center Stage in the Commentariat, I am actually making worthwhile connections there as well by doiing Battle with the Terminally Depressed.  ::)

LOL sigh Bugsy is a little behind the times, Jade Dragon gave up on trying to get people to move out there over a year ago, if I recall correctly.  He definitely is an interesting character.  His religious views makes Haniel and WHD look like staunch conservatives.  He is, however, one of the top experts on do-it-yourself Controlled Environment Life Support Systems, his flavor of which he calls the "eco-ark".  I'm definitely planning on leaning on him, also Darrell Frey, for courses in the Permaculture / Controlled Environments category on PEN.

You must have missed roger ellis diatribe wrt the diner. Someone should point out that if he takes any steps to keep himself alive now, he is excercising the same human exceptionalism he denounces. And that if he has kids its no more human exceptionalism to reply to "whats for dinner dad?" with "kangaroo stew" as it is with "packet pasta" if you dont accept foodstamp distribution as the end of the line before dying.

They are too gutless to try and all tout it as some sort of triumph attaining true peace? wtf do they intend to tell their hungry family when they are so open to experience borne of acceptance of futility.

Methinks a girlfriend of mine played a concert @ Fairie Hill. She and I didn't last, in part because you don't find many baldheads where the fairies congregate. LOL
