Title: The Year on Diner Soundcloud
Post by: RE on April 02, 2015, 12:54:11 AM
The Soundcloud Stats are one of the best direct indicators we have of the Total Reach of the Diner and how many people are really engaged in the topics we discuss.

Page Hits on Google Analytics are certainly better than the Alexa Stats, but even with Page Hits it's hard to determine how many people are just one time brief passers-by the Diner on the way to some other Final Destination, and how many stop in regularly for a meal.

Now, there are some people who will only read the Blog and don't like to Listen, so you miss counting those people with the Audio stats.  There are various reasons for this, many people simply don't have the Bandwidth to spend listening, particularly in the 3rd World countries. Even if you have the bandwidth, if you are not a Native speaker of English and can just about parse the written version, you certainly will not be able to follow my Rants at the speed I talk at. Even so, the list of Most Played Tracks, Top Countries & Top Cities is quite impressive.

Here is the tally for the last 12 months on Soundcloud.  You get the Top 50 in any Category.

Now, this is just the last 12 months of data.  The Top Listen Track of Nicole Foss actually has a total of 6000 Listens now.  That track is one of the first we recorded and goes back almost 2 years.  It got many of its Listens before this 12 month period began.

As you might expect, the Top 4 Countries Listening are all the English Speaking ones, the FSoA, Canada, UK and Oz.  Interestingly though, the Czech Republic Tops the Kiwis in New Zealand for Listens.  We have a few Listeners in Mother Russia, but NONE in China.  Why not?  Well, if you have been following Our Finite World and Gail's ongoing China Trip which I am helping her chronicle over there, you know why.  Gail can barely access the Internet, much less be listening to Audio over the net in China.  It's simply not available, either Censored or the infrastructure isn't there for it.  The way we get the posts up is she sends them to me in Email, and then I post them up under my Byline on OFW.  I'm an Author over there, so I can post and publish my own stuff on her blog.  Email you can do from China, but you cannot Edit a Wordpress Blog from over there, this is Blocked.

Far as the Cities go, what I find truly fascinating is that the largest Big Shities in the FSoA, NY Shity, Dallas-Fort Worth do not show up at ALL on the list! Even though the FSoA BY FAR is the largest Country with Listeners, the largest number of Listens from a single Shity is the Hosers in Toronto, Canada! Obviously, Doomers do not live in major FSoA Metros.  LOL.  OK, Los Angeles does have some Doomers.  The Water issues there gotta be hitting their consciousness by now.  Chicago too has some Doomers.  None from Detroit though, and NOBODY from Vegas, at least in the Top 50!  Have these folks not managed to notice the water level in Lake Mead?  What?

In discussions with Allan Stromfeldt Christensen, I mentioned to him that my estimate of the TOTAL number of people who visit ALL Collapse Websites was probably no more than 10,000.  Anybody who is a regular Kollapsnik visits all of them, or as many as they can turn up, so Kunstler's readers are Orlov's readers are JMG's readers etc.  These readers find their Favorite, and tend to spend most of their time online there, and usually only contribute to one or two commentariats, if they comment at all, and most do not.  A few of us Bloggers like Steve from Virginia from Economic Undertow and me ocassionally Poach the commentariat on other sites, but most of the other Bloggers don't do that.  It's time consuming, and you got enough to do with your own Blog.

In terms of Total Number of Collapse Bloggers, I estimated that number at under 100.  I do not count Financial Websites like Zero Hedge or even TBP in this, because these folks don't recognize that its not just the Financial system imploding, the Whole Fucking Ball of Wax is going down here. I don't include Geopolitical analysts like Tony Cartalucci from Land Destroyer either. In terms of Top Bloggers who recognize this, it's less than 20 I think.  Chris Martenson I think recognizes it, though he soft pedals it some as a Financial Website.  A few of the Top Bloggers who recognize the implications of Collapse (although I don't agree with many of their interpretations) are the following I can Identify, in no particular order:

Reverse Engineer (ME! :icon_sunny:)
Gail Tverberg
James Howard Kunstler
Dmitry Orlov
John Michael Greer
Guy McPherson
Albert Bates
Ugo Bardi
Steve Ludlum
Tom Lewis
X-Ray Mike

If you have some other folks you follow that you think should be included in the list of Top Collapse Blogs, suggest them here in the thread.  I am going to turn this into a Blog Article after I get some feedback from the Diners.

There are other smaller Blogs and Bloggers, I've run into a few lately, td0s from Pray for Calamity, Allan Stromfeldt Christensen from From Filmers to Farmers and of course my old friends William Hunter Duncan from Off the Grid in Minneapolis, Lucid Dreams from Epiphany Now and Gypsy Mama from The Butterchurn, but none of them are doing a whole lotta Blogging these days.  Then there is likely other ones I have not yet discovered, but I still think the total number is under 100.

In addition, there has been quite a bit of Burnout amongst long time Collapse Bloggers.  Nicole Foss hardly ever blogs anymore, Ilargi is doing the whole show on The Automatic Earth these days.  Matt Savinar is gone, Mike Ruppert is gone, Joe Bageant is gone, and many Commenters I know from the Peak Oil Forum are also gone now.  Recently departed from the Financial Blogosphere is Karl Denninger, who ran Market Ticker and Ticker Forum.

Many people have given up on trying to use the Internet to disseminate the information that never makes it out in the MSM, or is tortuously spun as Propaganda that is just a pack of endless Lies and Misinfomation.  Here on the Diner, we haven't given up yet.  More people are waking up now, and the Collapse is becoming obvious enough now that only the most Deluded of Denialists cannot see it.  There is still time and room to inform more people of what us Old Timers already know, that the Age of Oil is coming to a close, and if you don't prepare yourself at least Psychologically for this, you are not gonna make it through the Zero Point when TSHTF.

SAVE AS MANY AS YOU CAN

Carolyn Baker ("Speaking Truth To Power", http://www.carolynbaker.net/ (http://www.carolynbaker.net/)) definitely deserves a mention when it comes to adjusting psychologically to collapse.

Richard Heinberg (http://richardheinberg.com/category/museletter (http://richardheinberg.com/category/museletter)) I think also belongs on the list, at least as regards peak oil, if not general collapse.

I would put Tom Murphy ("Do the Math", http://physics.ucsd.edu/do-the-math/ (http://physics.ucsd.edu/do-the-math/)) on the burnout list.  He has posted a couple times this year, but he was much more prolific in previous years.

I'll add them, although I don't really count Heinberg as a Blogger since he has his Post Carbon Institute.  Not familiar with the work of Tom Murphy.  Far as Carolyn goes, I don't read her stuff or Guy McPherson, but I suppose she counts.  Guy himself actually rarely writes a blog (last time I checked there anyhow), he just puts up stuff contributors send to him these days.

Title: How Many Kollapsniks are there Globally?
Post by: RE on April 03, 2015, 06:59:03 PM

In discussions with Allan Stromfeldt Christensen, I mentioned to him that my estimate of the TOTAL number of people who visit ALL Collapse Websites was probably no more than 10,000.

I am going to revise this estimate up to 20,000.

Over on OFW, where I have been helping Gail get up her Travelogue from China, she currently has 18,152 Followers.  She's been around quite a while since TOD days, and she's an Active Blogger as well.  I think most Kollapsniks know about her blog so it's a good benchmark.

Now, not everyone who lists as a Follower is likely a Kollapsnik, since you get a lot of SPAM registrants on any website.  On the other hand, quite a few people who visit the blogs never register or list to follow the blog.  So I will call that a wash as a WAG.

20,000 is a fairly decent size group of people, but on the other hand very small compared to a total population of 7B.  It's .0003% of the total Global Population.

However, there probably are a decent number of people who never get on the net at all who are aware that there is a collapse underway, but probably not more than 1,000,000 Globally.  That is still only .015%.  There are fewer of us than there are Global Illuminati Pigmen!

I think there are more people aware but refuse to acknowledge
it or just don't have the stomach for it.
It's kinda like creep show movies. We all know they exist but
can't handle the blood & gore etc. i.e. Freddy Krueger, Friday 13th, etc.

People who are in Willful Denial do not count as Kollapsniks.  To be a Kollapsnik you have to know it, understand it and accept it as Truth with a Capital T.

BTW, I own Kollapsnik.com URL.  I scarfed it up when I realized Dmitry hadn't got it.  LOL.  Haven't made a website for it yet though.

I have to question your assumptions... I think a lot of homesteaders, preppers, and survivalists are aware that a collapse is underway, and there are several million of those in the US alone.  Still talking in the single digits percentage-wise, though.

Where does the estimate come from?  I Googled up this one:

http://www.offthegridnews.com/extreme-survival/the-modern-survivalist-movement-its-really-not-all-that-modern/ (http://www.offthegridnews.com/extreme-survival/the-modern-survivalist-movement-its-really-not-all-that-modern/)

Quote
While there are no accurate figures about how many people in the United States identify themselves as “preppers,” estimates range right around 3 million people.

Where did they pull that number from?

Even if you accept the number, I don't think just being a Prepper or Survivalist makes you a Kollapsnik.  Again, you have to know, understand and accept as Truth with a Capital T that Industrial Civilization is coming to an end.  Most Preppers just prep to make it through a Hurricane or short term disruption of daily life.  Few of them grasp that Industrial Civilization itself is coming to an end.

In absolute numbers, I think you are wrong, if you read a lot of their blogs, many of them do grasp that Industrial Civilization is coming to an end, at least as many as you identify as kollapsniks.  However, I bet you are correct in that in order to get a number as high as 3 million, they do count everyone who prepares for any kind of short term emergency.  Quite frankly, I represent both: I am aware of the collapsing civilization, but I am not prepared to survive anything more than several weeks, because quite frankly I have no interest in doing so (or at least I didn't until I had a kid, but I'm definitely still adjusting there).

Hmm. As I think of industrial civilization, I would not count as a Kollapsnik. I call myself a doomer because I accept as Truth that there will be a financial collapse leading to economic collapse leading to political collapse, but I do not assume it goes further than that. (It might, but it might not -- and it will (already has) in some places, but not necessarily in all.) So while I expect capitalism to collapse, I think it quite possible that industrial civilization can continue, albeit on a third world level and under some form of military dictatorship. That is, nations with an electrical grid and manufacturing.

I also think there is a range of Kollapsnikness. On occasion I have heard someone say something that indicates a lack of faith in BAU. For example, a 30-ish moderately intelligent fellow worker who said she did not expect Social Security to be operating by the time she retires (this was about 15 years ago). Or some folks on a metaphysics discussion group making offhand remarks of impending collapse.

It could be that a lot of people are like me about 30 years ago. At the time I was aware that debt (consumer and government) was increasing, and if it wasn't reined in would mean The End at some point, quite possibly within my lifetime. Plus being aware of Limits to Growth. But somehow, this sort of thinking would mostly stay in the background. It wasn't until about 10 years ago that I would say it became Truth with a capital T -- but again I would call it a Doom Lite and not a Full Doom Truth.

I'll map it to the Homepage of the Forum!  That will give the Forum it's own identity!

"Kollapsnik.com. Chat with your fellow Kollapsniks."

i'll get on that right now.

Done.

The domain actually was set up to forward to the Diner Blog Homepage.  However, I now have it set to come here to the Forum Homepage.  I also changed it to permanent forwarding, so now the Forum will accumulate it's own Google Analytics and Alexa stats.  :icon_sunny:

So now when you meet somebody you want to invite for a chat, you can just say "join us on Kollapsnik.com".nn :icon_sunny:

I have adjusted the layout on the Header.  The Map is now featured more prominently right below the Diner Comic Panel and text is wrapped around it.

If your browser magnification is right (90% on Mozilla Firefox), then it fits perfectly on the screen when you navigate to the page.

Let me know if it is not coming up correctly for you and what browser you are using.

Since most people default their browser setting to 100%, I readjusted the layout for this setting on Firefox.

Let me know how it looks on Explorer and Chrome if you use those browsers.

It should come up right on Firefox at 100% for anyone,b ut let me know if it doesn't for you.

Let me know how it looks on Explorer and Chrome if you use those browsers.

It should come up right on Firefox at 100% for anyone,b ut let me know if it doesn't for you.

How about Jason Heppenstall? He is widely read, and still writes from time to time. He should be on the blogger list. Jim Quinn?

I like the way this thread is going. I hope the kollapsnik url creates some more dialog.

Been back up north the past two days doing faux surgery on dead pigs. The hummingbirds are back in Austin. It is high spring.

Many of the bloggers who led me in this direction are long gone. Damon Vrable. There were others, I can't remember them all. I started out reading Ruppert, read many of the debt-based money guys like Bill Still. Chris Martenson until he went pay-per-view. TBP, Automatic Earth, then here, and later to NBL until I got my fill.

I have no idea how many real kollapsniks are out there. I even met a few when I went to hear Dan Amerman speak in Chicago a couple of years ago.

As we know, hard core survivalists consider the net unsafe. And many kollapsnik bloggers just gave up, because they didn't reach many people. I think that's true of Peter.

I wonder how many followers JW Rawles has?

Hepp hardly ever Blogs anymore.  His last one was from February.

Peter indeed gave up because he just did not believe he could reach enough people, or that they would listen.  Peter however does not think like I do, he is wonderful back end person but not a PROMOTER.

I am now seeking another Infection Vector which I am discussing with Surly.  If I can pull it off, it will catapult the Diner to a whole new level.

I will inform you in PM.

Discuss this article at the Podcast Table inside the Diner

About a year after we started the Doomstead Diner Blog & Forum we decided to add some Audio interviews with “Collapse Starz”, including early on folks like Nicole Foss, Gail Tverberg, Guy McPherson, David Korowicz, George Mobus, Ugo Bardi, Steve Ludlum and many others.  You can find the full list of all our Podcasts on the DINER SOUNDCLOUD Channel, and we have a few new ones currently still under production. Coming Soon to a Laptop Near You, as I like to say.  LOL.

I personally have something of a history here, doing Pirate Radio in my youth in the 1970s.  This is where my Pump Up the Volume/Everybody Knows theme song by Leonard Cohen clip at the top comes from.  So it was not a big stretch for me to start doing some Audio as well as Blogging, actually it comes more naturally to me than Blogging does since it is interactive dialogue, which I prefer.

Frostbite_Falls

Several months after beginning the Interviews, I hit on the idea of turning my “Frostbite Falls Daily Rant” franchise into Audio as well.  The FFDR comes from my time Blogging on Jim Quinn’s website, The Burning Platform, where I would write a new Blog every other day or so, some of them quite long too!  LOL.  I wasn’t running a website then, so if I felt like writing for a few hours I would do that, and of course there is plenty in collapse to write about every day these days.

NumberOneWithABulletStarting the Audio Rants took the Diner out of the vast Sea of Small Blogs, rapidly jacking up the Alexa Ranking of the Diner from the +3,000,000 category to as high as 175,000 at one point.  Sadly, it has sunk since then, but not because the Diner isn’t growing in readership, Alexa changed the way they were accumulating the stats on the Diner.  Since the high point of Alexa Ranking when the Diner had around 1500 Page Hits/Day according to Google Analytics, it has more than doubled in circulation to around 3500 Page Hits/Day.  The Alexa method of Ranking websites has a lot of problems, mainly that the only people recorded are those who have an Alexa toolbar installed, and this then can be skewed by a few people who visit a site often and spend a lot of time there.  So it really wasn’t (and isn’t) an accurate indicator of how the Diner is doing overall.

In my never ending quest as a Stats Freak to keep tabs on the Diner progress, I look for stats that give me a better clue on this.  Page Hits on Google Analytics are certainly better than the Alexa Stats, but even with Page Hits it’s hard to determine how many people are just one time brief passers-by the Diner on the way to some other Final Destination, and how many stop in regularly for a meal.  The Soundcloud Stats we get from the Diner Podcasts are one of the best direct indicators we have of the Total Reach of the Diner and how many people are really engaged in the topics we discuss.

Now, there are some people who will only read the Blog and don’t like to Listen, so you miss counting those people with the Audio stats.  There are various reasons for this, many people simply don’t have the Bandwidth to spend listening, particularly in the 3rd World countries. Even if you have the bandwidth, if you are not a Native speaker of English and can just about parse the written version, you certainly will not be able to follow my Rants at the speed I talk at. Even so, the list of Most Played Tracks, Top Countries & Top Cities is quite impressive.

Now, this is just the last 12 months of data.  The Top Listen Track of Nicole Foss actually has a total of more than 6000 Listens now.  That track is one of the first we recorded and goes back almost 2 years.  It got many of its Listens before this 12 month period began.

revolver_stats

The Global Diners. Dots represent Cities checking in, many represent multiple readers and listeners.

Why not?  Well, if you have been following Our Finite World and Gail’s ongoing China Trip which I am helping her chronicle over there, you know why.  Gail can barely access the Internet, much less be listening to Audio over the net in China.  It’s simply not available, either Censored or the infrastructure isn’t there for it.  The way we get the posts up is she sends them to me in Email, and then I post them up under my Byline on OFW.  I’m an Author over there, so I can post and publish my own stuff on her blog.  Email you can do from China, but you cannot Edit a WordPress Blog from over there, this is Blocked.  We do have READERS in China though, this I get from our newest Stat Collection service, the Revolver Globe site.

http://voices.nationalgeographic.com/files/2013/03/lake-mead-drought.jpgFar as the Cities go, what I find truly fascinating is that the largest Big Shities in the FSoA, NY Shity, Dallas-Fort Worth do not show up at ALL on the list! What?

In discussions with Allan Stromfeldt Christensen of the From Filmers to Farmers blog, I mentioned to him that my estimate of the TOTAL number of people who visit ALL Collapse Websites was probably no more than 10,000 (now revised up to 20,000).  Anybody who is a regular Kollapsnik visits all of them, or as many as they can turn up, so Kunstler’s readers are Orlov’s readers are JMG’s readers etc.  These readers find their Favorite, and tend to spend most of their time online there, and usually only contribute to one or two commentariats, if they comment at all, and most do not.  A few of us Bloggers like Steve from Virginia from Economic Undertow and me ocassionally Poach the commentariat on other sites, but most of the other Bloggers don’t do that.  It’s time consuming, and you got enough to do with your own Blog.

In terms of Total Number of Collapse Bloggers, I estimated that number at under 100.  I do not count Financial Websites like Zero Hedge or even TBP in this, because these folks don’t recognize that its not just the Financial system imploding, the Whole Fucking Ball of Wax is going down here. I don’t include Geopolitical analysts like Tony Cartalucci from Land Destroyer either. In terms of Top Bloggers who recognize this, it’s less than 20 I think.  Chris Martenson I think recognizes it, though he soft pedals it some as a Financial Website.  A few of the Top Bloggers who recognize the implications of Collapse (although I don’t agree with many of their interpretations) are the following I can Identify, in no particular order:

Reverse Engineer (ME! :icon_sunny:)

Gail Tverberg

James Howard Kunstler

Dmitry Orlov

John Michael Greer

Guy McPherson

Albert Bates

Ugo Bardi

Steve Ludlum

Tom Lewis

Chris Martenson

X-Ray Mike

Other folks have been suggested as well, such as Carolyn Baker, Richard Heinberg, Tom Murphy, Morris Berman and others who are involved here, but not all really fit the category of “blogger” (Heinberg for instance is more Scientist than Blogger), not all blog too regularly if they do blog, and in any event are not generally on my Collapse Radar Screen.  If you have other Favorites who you think should be included here, drop it in the Comments below, along with Links to their Blogs!

There are other smaller Blogs and Bloggers, I’ve run into a few lately, td0s from Pray for Calamity, Allan Stromfeldt Christensen of the blog From Filmers to Farmers and of course my old friends William Hunter Duncan from Off the Grid in Minneapolis, Jason Heppenstall from 22 Billion Energy Slaves, Lucid Dreams from Epiphany Now and Gypsy Mama from The Butterchurn, but none of them are doing a whole lotta Blogging these days.  Then there are likely other ones I have not yet discovered, but I still think the total number is under 100.

Here on the Diner, we haven’t given up yet.  More people are waking up now, and the Collapse is becoming obvious enough now that only the most Deluded of Denialists cannot see it.  There is still time and room to inform more people of what us Old Timers already know, that the Age of Oil is coming to a close, and if you don’t prepare yourself at least Psychologically for this, you are not gonna make it through the Zero Point when TSHTF.

Quote from: wiki
Macedonia (ancient kingdom)

Macedonia or Macedon (/ˈmæsɪˌdɒn/; Greek: Μακεδονία, Makedonía; Ancient: [ma͜akedoní.a͜a]) was an ancient kingdom on the northern periphery of Classical Greece[2] and later the dominant state of Hellenistic Greece.[3] It was ruled during most of its existence initially by the legendary founding dynasty of the Argeads, the intermittent Antipatrids and finally the Antigonids. Home to the Macedonians, the earliest kingdom was centered on the northeastern part of the Greek peninsula,[4] bordered by Epirus to the west, Paeonia to the north, the region of Thrace to the east and Thessaly to the south.

The rise of Macedon, from a small kingdom at the fringe of typical Greek city states affairs, to one which came to control the fate of the entire Hellenic world, occurred under the reign of Philip II. With the innovative Macedonian army, he defeated the old powers of Athens and Thebes in the decisive Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BC and subdued them, while keeping Sparta in check. His son Alexander the Great pursued his father's effort to command the whole of Greece through the federation of Greek states, a feat he finally accomplished after destroying a revolting Thebes. Young Alexander was then ready to lead this force, as he aspired, in a large campaign against the Achaemenid Empire, in retaliation for the invasion of Greece in the 5th century BC.

In the ensuing wars of Alexander the Great, he was ultimately successful in conquering a territory that came to stretch as far as the Indus River. For a brief period his Macedonian Empire was the most powerful in the world, the definitive Hellenistic state, inaugurating the transition to this new period of Ancient Greek civilization. Greek arts and literature flourished in the new conquered lands and advancements in philosophy and science were spread to the ancient world. Of most importance were the contributions of Aristotle, a teacher to Alexander, whose teachings carried on many centuries past his death.

After the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC, the following wars of the Diadochi and the partitioning of his short-lived empire, Macedonia proper carried on as a Greek cultural and political center in the Mediterranean region along with Ptolemaic Egypt, the Seleucid Empire, and the Attalid kingdom. Important cities like Pella, Pydna, and Amphipolis were involved in power struggles for control of the territory, and new cities were founded, like Thessalonica by the usurper Cassander, which is now the second largest city of modern day Greece. Macedonia's decline of influence began with the rise of Rome until its ultimate subjection during the second Macedonian Wars.

Poland

Home to the infamous Warsaw Ghetto in WWII, and the Warsaw Uprising (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warsaw_Uprising).

Quote
The Warsaw Uprising (Polish: powstanie warszawskie) was a major World War II operation by the Polish resistance Home Army (Polish: Armia Krajowa) to liberate Warsaw from Nazi Germany. The Uprising was timed to coincide with the Soviet Union's Red Army approaching the eastern suburbs of the city and the retreat of German forces.[9] However, the Soviet advance stopped short, enabling the Germans to regroup and demolish the city while defeating the Polish resistance, which fought for 63 days with little outside support. According to Janusz Terej, the Uprising was the largest single military effort taken by any European resistance movement during World War II.[10]

Title: The Diner: Who's Coming to Dinner and How Often?
Post by: RE on April 16, 2015, 09:21:09 AM
Here's the latest Global Diners, with the relative Visitor counts from each location, from both sides of the Globe:

Diner Map Globe Visitor Count
Diner Map Globe Visitor Count

Diner Map Globe Visitor Count 2
Diner Map Globe Visitor Count 2

This is after just 2 weeks of Stat Collection on Revolver!

The HUGE spike coming up out of Palmer AK is ME!  :icon_sunny:

There are a few other really BIG SPIKES also, we got one coming out of Texas, wonder who that could be?   ;D

These are the stats for the Diner Blog (http://www.revolvermaps.com/?target=enlarge&i=25h9kf7xr5x&color=ff0000&m=0), not the Forum (http://www.revolvermaps.com/?target=enlarge&i=2f44vmdq33n&color=ff0000&m=0) here.  There are two different maps with different counts.  The Forum map has roughly half the total hits that the Blog does, but coming from fewer different people.  Forum visitors hit the pages more often than Blog readers do, which only makes sense.

Far as Google Analytics is concerned, we're creeping back up to our Peak of 90,000 Page Hits/Month we hit a couple of months ago.  I'm hoping to get to 6 figures before I go Quadraplegic.

Title: Vote for your favorite Blog Map Widget
Post by: RE on April 16, 2015, 11:18:04 AM
I got the revolving globe to work on the Diner Blog.  :icon_sunny:

Right now, I have both the Flat Map and the Revolving Globe widgets up.  However, I only will pick one of the two to keep up after getting some Diner feedback.

Advantage to the Revolving Globe:  It shows Active Diners flashing in white dots.
Disadvantages to the Revolving Globe: You can't open the Stats Page in a new window when you click on it
It might not work on some folks computers who don't have Java script enabled
It might make the page a little too "busy"

Advantage to the Flat Map: You can open up the Stats Page in a new window
It should work on all computers
Disadvantages to the Flat Map: It doesn't flash the currently active Diners
It's not as cool as the Revolving Globe

Place your vote today in the Poll at the top of the page.

Not sure I love either one, even though it is a cool app. For anyone who reads this forum regularly, it's extremely easy to pick out exactly where the current readers are, at least in general terms. I make no secret of my location, but when I looked a minute or two ago, it was easy to see where you, me, and Ka were, and I saw a couple of other readers I could make an intelligent guess at, as to identity.

You can pick Palloy out, I think. Hope he doesn't mind me saying that.

Yah, but not everybody shows up on it either though.  Also, you can easily disguise your location using a proxy server.

Even if you do show up, it only narrows you down to a 39 sq km area, so unless you are in a very sparsely populated area, the user couldn't find you with it.

It has some neat features, you can tell when an NSA Bot is hitting the site, you get many page hits in seconds from the same location.

Mainly I like it because it lets the Newbies know instantly that the Diner has a large and well distributed readership base.  This makes people curious about what the other Diners find interesting about the site.  So I think it encourages a newbie to poke around more.  It also tells me stuff I never knew from looking at Google Analytics or even Soundcloud Stats, like for instance how popular the Diner is in New Zealand.  Obviously, they have an outsized population of doomers for the total population of the country.  Also all those hits from places you just wouldn't expect to see, like Iran.

I LOVE Revolver Stats!

While Google Analytics provides a measure in terms of page hits and visitors, you don't know where they are coming from (unless of course you $PAY GOOGLE$ for more detailed stuff)

Now I have amuch better knowledge of where the Diners are, which is basically EVERYWHERE!

Here's the Bottom of the list of 122 Countries stopping by the Diner for a Doom Meal in the last 2 Weeks:

Uzbekistan?  CAMBODIA?!?! There's a Cambodian Diner?  :o

FSoA has around 50% of the visits.  Rest are sprinkled around the globe pretty well.

Title: Something Strange in the Stats
Post by: RE on April 19, 2015, 06:38:26 PM
We have a very steady and regular amount of page hits, 2500-3500/day.

However, in the last 2 days, page hits dropped to half that.  This is from Google Analytics.

At the SAME TIME on Revolver, whole CONTINENTS dropped off the map of stat collection.  South America, Africa, no stats.

This is not Diner, it's general, I looked at stats for other websites too.

Something is happening here.

From what I can determine so far based on observation of the stats over the last couple of days, we have been CUT OFF from just about all the Eurotrash Diners other than the Kraut and Dutch Boy Bots.  Occassional hits from the UK and sporadic hits from other countries, but nowhere near the norm.

Similar with South America and Africa.

Something is definitely going on here.

Roughly 3 days ago, Europe LITERALLY dropped off the Diner Map.  On the right is a map of Visits from Eurotrashland we had through the first couple of weeks of April.
Diner Map Europe
Diner Map Europe

As you can see, there are hundreds of Diner Dots, and many of those Dots represent multiple visits from a 39 sq-km radius.  Just from the Frogs, Krauts and Ities we had a couple of thousand visits in 2 weeks.  To get there, you need to be hitting on the pages at least 100 times a day.

All of a SUDDEN though, about 3 days ago just about all traffic from Eurotrashland came to a screaching HALT.  I know this because I am online these days nearly 24/7, and have my stats pages open all the time.  The Diner Dots just about never flash in Europe now, though they still flash in North America and Oz and NZ.

Simultaneous with this on the Revolver stats, the Google Analytics stats took a NOSEDIVE.  So this isn't a Revolver problem.

What happened here?  I can't imagine that all of a sudden all the Diners sprinkled around Europe decided simultaneously to stop visiting the Diner.  That makes no statistical sense whatsoever.

The only explanation I can come up with is that the Diner is being Filtered and censored in the European market.  Why that would be so I have no idea.

If there are any Eurotrash reading the Forum here, if you would check in at least as a Guest to let us know if the Diner is visible to you, I would appreciate it.

I do believe the time is drawing nearer where the Diner will no longer be accessible on the World Wide Web.  :(

I will keep watching the stats, and hopefully this is just some sort of glitch and will be rectified by the techies running the global routers.  So far though, just a few Bots seem to be making it through from Europe.

Tarek al-Tayeb Mohamed Bouazizi (Arabic: محمد البوعزيزي‎; 29 March 1984 – 4 January 2011) was a Tunisian street vendor who set himself on fire on 17 December 2010, in protest of the confiscation of his wares and the harassment and humiliation that he reported was inflicted on him by a municipal official and her aides. His act became a catalyst for the Tunisian Revolution[2] and the wider Arab Spring, inciting demonstrations and riots throughout Tunisia in protest of social and political issues in the country. The public's anger and violence intensified following Bouazizi's death, leading then-President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali to step down on 14 January 2011, after 23 years in power.

You are not forgotten on the pages of the Diner, MB.

Post by: RE on May 08, 2015, 02:56:08 AM
In contemplating this, I seriously doubt all of those 146 countries checking in have HUMAN EYEBALLS reading the Diner Screen.

In all likelihood, each country registered has a Security Agency with a Bot that scours the web periodically.  So the longer your site is up, the more likely you will get a hit from one of these Bots.

It's very difficult to separate out the Human Eyeballs from the Bots, on any Stat Sevice.
