Doomsteading / C5 Walks Out of a Diner...
« on: April 13, 2020, 07:38:18 AM »

It's main use would be water filtration... of which, I have no need for charcoal.

The only reason I would recommend it would be to block up lethal diarrhea. It's other use.

I wonder if that comment was too subtle.  ::)

Far too subtle for RE. He thinks "lethal diarrhea" is artistic expression.

It's not too subtle for me, and impugning my intelligence and ability to read subtext is a violation of the CoC.  I suggest you give yourself 3 days in the Cooler.

RE
Fine. I was considering ceasing all input anyhow... just as I did with Permies when they were giving a voice to climate denialists. Their loss. I clearly have more important things to do. Food to grow. Things to build. People to save.

I'm hearing a voice, a word, from the spirits through my crystal ball. That word is "Intervention"

As your resident expert on preppers.......

How much Activated Charcoal do you have in your Preps?

RE

I have a deep, clear, house well.
I have a spring fed surface well.
I have roof catchment.
I have two ponds that we dug.
There is a LARGE cattail filled pond at the edge of our property.
We have hundreds of liters of our own water stored in the back room.
40 litres of distilled water for the solar batteries.
About 80 ltrs of juice.
A local milk source.
Bleach.
Crystallized bleach
40 ltrs water heated near boiling point on the wood fired stove as I type.

Any questions?

So no Activated Charcoal?   :icon_scratch:

Question: What good will all those other Preps do you when your corpse is pushing up daisies after inhaling COVID-19?  ???

RE
I see everybody has been busy shouting at each other.

Ah. I see. You were thinking gas mask. As NF pointed out, a virus is not a gas, thus a charcoal filter is as useless as a gas mask, thus I never gave it consideration to your random attack for no purpose.

It's main use would be water filtration... of which, I have no need for charcoal.

The only reason I would recommend it would be to block up lethal diarrhea. It's other use.

I have a very good filter. A kilometer to the nearest neighbor.

I spent the day, up on the new ladder cutting black knot out of our sour cherry trees. I had to save the trees if I want to continue to have that food source. Then I drained and cut up an abandoned oil tank on the property to build a mobile fire pit. Something that wont start a grass fire. Then I burned the black knot infested branches so it doesnt re-enter the soil and spread again.

The job took a lot more of my day than intended. But that's permiculture and building food security. Cut forest logs to raise the garden beds the days before.

Tomorrow, I'll cut a lid for the mobile fire pit so I can walk away from the fire instead of having to monitor the embers if the wind kicks up, then get to modifying my flat deck trainer to a box so I can hall in a load of cow manure from a friends place.

My brain is a bit to fuzzy tonight to reply to the, "The virus was an inside job" video.

My only comment was about how I seem to recall a lot of that response after 9-11. I expected to see a lot of that, this disaster.

Something to keep in mind. Every virus expert on the face of the planet will has been and will be studying and dissecting every part of this virus. Every genome.

It would be all over the news by now if it was observed to be man made. Had the same arguments after 9-11 about how the building were supposedly blown up by a sinister cabal of globalists... and global warming isn't happening because its sun spots.

Full Spectrum Survival  has been around for a while. Humorless and a bit of Charles Manson intensity.

He catches the news quick though. Unfortunately he always takes it off onto something Americacentric that makes me roll my eyes. Always. Always. Always.

This time... He did the job right.

Right enough to make up for 100 eye rolls.

Good enough to make me want to share it. Share it as if it is MY advice.

He debunks some of the shit I have also noticed floating around the preppersphere.

That'll do, pig

Medicine & Health / Re: 🦠 CDC believe Covid-19 has R0 of 5.7
« on: April 09, 2020, 05:39:01 AM »
A bit of dry read this one and you should put on your academic hat when reading this. If you get a chance to read it the most important and significant take home point is that the often quoted R0 value of 2.5 provided by the WHO may actually be an underestimate according to recent analysis from the CDC. The recent study from CDC estimate the R0 to be 5.7 with 95% of cases resulting in a transmission rate of 3.8-8.9 new additional infections. This has important preventive implications as if a society hopes to gain herd immunity then a 55% immunity rate is required if the natural R0 is 2.2 but if the virus R0 is 5.7 then you will need an immunity rate of 82% to achieve herd immunity.

High Contagiousness and Rapid Spread of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)

I just KNEW the R0 was going to turn out to be much higher than the original estimates.....been saying it for a while.....its just way too contagious.

Only makes sense given what happened in Italy and NYC.

I had someone tell me recently, "No one could have seen this coming" and I was left dumbfounded at how committed people are to BAU. Maybe it's just me. This was always coming. 8 billion people. Mega Cities. Airplanes as normal as cars. What could possibly go wrong. Add global trade of goods. Was always going to happen.
I was trying to figure out how to use this clip. The most profound clip in the Planet of The Apes remake was the end credits. The movie? Yawn. The Credits stuck with me though.

My thoughts were that it had spread the world long before they shut down Wuhan. I figure it has been here since December and spreading. Just not diagnosed. November even. September wouldnt surprise me at all. I also wouldnt be surprised if it didnt start in China but came from elsewhere and that just became the hub of the spread

Really good coverage on all the COVID stuff. You should go mainstream with the Surly Report.

I agree! I start my days at home with reading your Diner daily posts and it's kept me very informed.
I believe I mentioned something similar recently.

Kunt-slur went Quisling long ago. Look up the term https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quisling

Some times when someone is afraid of something, they try to become the thing they are afraid of.

He spent to much time being dissed about his Jewishness by Nazis during Y2K. Just saying. He went quisling. It's my only explanation.  Back in my street day, back in the skin head days when we had to deal with that shit, we were confounded by jewish skinheads that thought Hitler was was the bee's knees. We were left scratching our heads as to how this happened.

I'm as confused as the next guy. Just saying. Sometimes your heroes just let you down.

By the way, I don't apologize for for the Kunt-Slur

We are all slaves. Your whining is not worth anything.

TB vaccine offers 90% coverage for CV19. India is in good shape. Germany required it until 1998.

Basically US and EU did not.
Are you back?
Really?

Answer my questions. Are you on drugs... or.... are you supposed to be on drugs but decided to stop taking them because the "cult" news was giving you a better high and the other drugs was just slowing you down. Got any special revelations from "spirits" yet about the "Truth" about how you are their prophet?

I just thought I would toss this in here.

Les Stroud has been a great example of why no not bug out to the woods when the shit hits the fan. We have watched him nearly starve or freeze to death many times. Somehow, people get the opposite message and thinking they can survive by boy scout skills. Its a running theme because I used to be that guy but learned better.

Found this today and I think I will use it on the blog. Here he goes apocalyptic shopping and I find myself going, good enough job. That'll do pig

Except for the lack of a mask. Mask is like a condom. It doesnt guarantee I dont catch something. Its so I dont give something. If someone goes condomless...assume they are lying... or ignorant of their status.

Nice.

I've procrastinated in planting my starts, but plan to begin that process today.  Seems there is ample time, still. April begins tomorrow.

I get conflicting reports from differing sources about when last frost is here in Santa Fe, which is situated at nearly 7,000 ft elevation, which makes it a fairly cold place compared to other places at the same latitude.  Some say it's around May 10th (Mothers Day) that it should be safe to plant.  But it so much feels like spring here now! Sigh.

I've not grown much of anything in years, mostly because I lacked space to do so.

I have limited space in my little casita, too. I'll start some of my plants in the casita, but will probably improvise a tiny little sheet plastic greenhouse or cold frame in the tiny yard, too.

Have you spoken with any of your neighbors about a community garden, Cam? What are your thoughts and plans on that?

The social aspect of this is definitely the part I don't like quite as much. Don't get me wrong I have a core group of friends and I get along with pretty much everyone in my life just fine. I am however someone who prefers to sit inside and read versus going out and socializing, so this quarantine hasn't been bad for me that way. I haven't been in direct contact with any of my neighbours regarding a garden yet, and that is partially because I'm not super social but also that I think I'm putting too much pressure on myself to make this work and to make it big (i.e. lots of houses involved). I also need to finish one friggen essay I have left for one of my classes which I am very excited to be done.

When it comes to actually getting this started, I'm unclear on some stuff and I think that is what's slowing me down. I have a lot of seeds for quite a few types of veggies and herbs. I also have about 50L left of potting mix that I will need some of to transplant my bigger seedlings to bigger pots eventually. So I do have extra seeds and mix. Should I go door to door and introduce myself, or maybe drop a letter off in mailboxes with my contact info on it? In my mom's letter she went and handed out a week ago she included a little paragraph on our garden and how we have some extra supplies, so people already know a little bit about what we're doing. Maybe give people some seeds in baggies along with some potting mix and let them plant seeds in their containers that would have gone in the recycle (yogurt containers, sour cream containers, etc.)? I'm curious of what you think is best.
cam,
Might I suggest starting with a small garden to supplement your own consumption of produce and let the rest come with  time. Pour your limited energy into growing meaningful amounts of food and take the social end slowly. I will guarantee you there are gardening clubs, permaculture clubs etc already established in your area. Find them and humbly learn from them. There is rarely a need to completely reinvent the wheel. My own experience has shown me that all too often the desire for social change sucks up all the energy and far overshadows a newcomer's actual production of food. Get good at gardening, use it as your calling card for transformation...
I will step off my soap box now...
Cheers,  NF

Damn good advice, as usual.
Same. Same.

Community gardens are also hard to defend. Keep it close. It's OK to great your neighbors at this point, just so everyone knows each others face. If you can grow extra and hand it out later, this should build neighbor and community loyalty. Show up with extra produce and people will remember you.

I havent done it but I have seen good reports of growing potatoes in buckets or even bags of commercial soil, for those with limited space. Hang on. Ill try to find something on it.

Taking Vitamin C without cofactor just makes your pee look funny.

Remember to get the stuff with rose hips or some other source of co-factor....I still think fresh fruits and jalapeņos are the best source of Vitamin C.....just my two cents.

We are boosting zinc and Vitamin D right now.

We're also sleeping under.a humidifier to help keep our airways healthy......even though we aren't sick. Seasonal allergies affect my ability to breathe comfortably during my sleeping hours.....the humidifier seems to help quite a bit.

Cutting alcohol to help keep my blood sugar under control.
That is truly the apocalypse. I have been cutting down on alcohol myself. Rather big deal for a guy with PTSD. I broke today though. First time I ever wore a mask, glasses and gloves to buy beer though. The tellers wouldnt look at me... and they know me. Canada faces a BIG problem about mask avoidance. We will polite ourselves into the grave.

I was eyeballing some wild rosehips yesterday as I cut firewood. Not there yet. Couldnt face the saw today. I figured I needed beer to face repairing shovel handle repairs and getting them linseed oiled up. Never been good at maintaining tools. Time to start.

Seclusion is getting to even me though.

Found a new vid of the day to give people a chuckle set to the tune of bohemian rapsody. I guess everybody has too much time on their hands

Has anybody on this board actually seen a sick person with their own two eyes?
Me and MrsC5 were pretty fucking sick. Still having lung problems.

Connected to one other in London.

There is a motto by a well known organized crime group I have had some dealings with and try to avoid. "Three people can keep a secret if two of them are dead".

Yet there is a grand conspiracy of millions keeping their mouths shut, hum. From countries that hate each other. Netanyahu and the Iranians have teamed up... to put American red necks in concentration camps to take away their god given guns and give them the mark of the beast.

That sounds reasonable.

What drugs are you on, boy?

Better question. What drugs are you supposed to be on but decided to stop taking lately?
