Title: DD updates log (old)
Post by: Palloy on September 15, 2016, 07:09:10 AM
This thread is for recording updates of WordPress and SMF for DD, and for reporting any errors that arise.

DD's Wordpress was updated to v4.6.1 OK on 15 Sep 2016 at 14:00 GMT.
WP-plugins updated OK.
WP-Themes updated OK.

SMF is at 2.0.11

2 October  SMF updated to 2.0.12 OK

There appear to be some problems with this update of SMF.  The upper Navigation Bar which appears on the Index page disappears to a brown dot on other pages amking navigation around the site rather difficult.  Right now I am kludging it by using the Back button to go back to the index page to find the Nav Bar.

Title: SMF Top Menu Bar Issues
Post by: RE on October 04, 2016, 09:09:00 AM
The recent update to SMF seems to have messed up the top menu bar of the Diner Forum.  It appears as a Brown Dot rather than as all the navigation links, at least in the Firefox Browser.

However, it is still working properly in the Microsoft Edge browser and the Android browser on smart phones.

Until we get it fixed, I suggest using these browsers for posting on the Diner.

Title: The Brown Dot of Death
Post by: RE on October 04, 2016, 05:44:51 PM
I am now getting the "Brown Dot of Death" on the Microsoft Edge Browser as well as Firefox, and Eddie reported it is occuring on Google Chrome also.  So it is ot restricted to Firefox.  I am doing work arounds by entering the actual URLs for the pages I wish to access.  Most of them are stored in my history file fortunately.

This is a major pain in the ass.  We need to roll back to the previous version of SMF ASAP.

I suggest you keep the tabs open, so as not to lose them.
I don't know how to do a rollback - I'm getting round to finding out, but not ASAP.

I am not worried about me.  I can find all the links from the URLs.  It's everybody else who depends on the nav bar that I am worried about.

FWIW I have created a nav bar at http://doomsteaddiner.net/palloy/navbar.htm (http://doomsteaddiner.net/palloy/navbar.htm)

The problem with the proper nav bar is being fixed and SMF 2.0.13 will be out "soon" to fix it.

My nav bar doesn't have "Logout" on it because that function requires the value that is held in a cookie on your computer that you were given when you logged in for the current session.  I think if you delete that cookie it is the same as logging out.  It belongs to "doomsteaddiner.net" and is called "SMFCookie288".

To access your cookies in Firefox for Windows, first click on Tools > Options > .  For Firefox for Linux, Edit > Preferences >  . Then click on Privacy > Remove individual cookies > .  Scan the list for "doomsteaddiner.net" and click on the expand arrow.  Then highlight SMFCookie288 and click Remove.

Other browsers will have something similar.

Title: Paying the SPAM Protection Racket
Post by: RE on October 13, 2016, 10:56:33 AM
The Spam issue on the Blog Commentary is fixed.

I reactivated "Clean Talk", where the free trial ended a few months ago and then we began get ever increasing amounts of spam each day.  At first they all went into the moderation bin and I was able to hand delete them before they were published.  In the last couple of weeks though they started going straight up, totally messing up the commentary over there.

The instant disappearance of all SPAM once I paid the Protection Money makes me quite suspicious.  I suspect the SPAM actually comes from Clean Talk itself, through Chinese contractors.  If you're not paying your protection money, then Clean Talk gives the green light to their spam division to start bombarding you.

As Protection Money fees go, it's quite cheap at $8/year per website.  Well worth it to keep the commentary clean.  The fees will no doubt increase with time though.

For now, I'll pay the protection and keep the commentary open over there.  If it gets too expensive though, I'll shut it down and just keep the forum open for commentary by members only.

SMF still haven't got fixes out for v2.0.12 .  RE noticed, and I can confirm, that the brown navigation bar is visible again after it is updated to show that you have new PM messages.  So if you really need to logout for some reason, https://doomsteaddiner.net/palloy/navbar.htm will give you the link for My-Messages, and then you can send a message to yourself a message, and get the bar back with the Logout link on it.

SMF is badly in need of an update.

Yes it does.  The trouble is they are working on getting version 2.1 ready for general release, meanwhile problems in 2.0 keep piling up.  Version 2.0.7+ needs PHP 5.5+, but doesn't work in PHP 7 at all, and the latest PHP 5.6 has just gone out of support apart from security issues.

So on the SMF's own Forum, once you find the thread, everyone is jumping up and down saying "Fix 2.0.12", "No,  fix PHP 7 compatibility !" and the developers/testers are saying "We will fix everything, but give us time, and can we please have more help with coding/testing".

PHP 7 has dropped the interface to MySQL database, in favour of MySQLi (more secure).  This means all the coding that accesses the MySQL database has to be changed to use the MySQLi database.  SMF keeps all its links from the Forum Menu (Doomstead Diner Menu to the boards (Geopolitics and DD Newz Channels) to the threads (DD updates log) to the Posts in MySQL database, so the amount of code that needs to be changed is huge, and needs to be done on SMF-2.0 and SMF-2.1 and rigorously tested.

So the brown dot of death is going to be with us for a long time yet.  The alternative is to switch to another forum package, like PHPBB3, but that would require an "import SMF database" feature.  I don't know if they offer that, or even if they support PHP 7.

Title: Re: DD updates log

Yes SMF is a fucking mess - you should see the PHP coding.  The whole task is broken down into modules, to keep the length of code relatively short (but lots of modules).  The modules intercommunicate through lots of "global definitions", so if you don't know what a global name represents, or what it is supposed to contain at any moment, with lots of users doing different things all at the same time, the coding is absolutely impenetrable, so nobody volunteers to help.  Eventually you get to a point where when a major change happens, like PHP 7, the whole thing is in danger of collapsing in a heap - death by complexity overload.

MySQL has been deprecated in PHP for 18 months, but all that means is you get lots of "deprecated function" warnings pouring out on the PHP logs, until someone switches off logging of "deprecated" warnings and carries on as normal.  Then 18 months later and suddenly its PHP 7 only, and "deprecated" turns into "gone" and everyone says "WTF? - we've got a huge code base that needs to be updated and no one can understand the code anyway."

Programmers suffer collapse by complexity overload too - I lasted 12 years in the professional (high stress) area, which was exceptional - most only last 3 years.  Then I took off and turned into a traveler/hippie/primitivist, refusing to have a telephone for 15 years.

MySQL and PHP are everywhere throughout web servers, including Facebook and Twitter, Google's Joomla, etc.  Microsoft's ASPX is a rival to PHP, though knowing all the bugs in Windows, you can imagine what their code looks like under the covers.  And though no one talks about it, PHP actually has a thing called the Zend Engine that it relies on somehow, and nobody knows what it really is.  At the other end of the software layering is the Operating System and ultimately the Firmware Layer.  If the manufacturer puts malware in the firmware, you are fucked, so Android Operating System is wide open to being fucked with right from the start, and to be totally avoided.  Similarly the Orange Pi and all its friends, are fucked, even though the OS is Linux - if the Linux Firmware can't talk to every component of the hardware, and needs outside assistance in the form of unapproved firmware, you're fucked.

And the rest of the world carries on as if everything is alright.

"Palloy" is an ordinary user. "Palloy2" is an Administrator user who used to be called "God".  I would swap between the 2 to do Admin stuff, but its annoying, so God renamed himself Palloy2 (quite appropriate really   :icon_sunny: ).

Thanks, but I am still confused. Allow me to be more specific please

Have you been a secret admin all along since the God designation was given you?

Are you now one of our out of the closet Censors, and has it been decided to make it public?

Or are you an admin specific to technical matters on the Diner and not a new member of the thought police? Will you be posting under two different names? One in Diner forum Chit Chat, Palloy and the other in Technical matters on the Cyber Security thread, Palloy2 where you are an admin.

Since we are on the topic of Admins can I assume that Babbles And Pale Ryder are also regular posters who have been given admin designations under secret names to hide who they are.                         I hope you can understand why I'm curious                                                                                                                                               Thanks GO

Also in another matter, am curious as to why RE's previous announcement posted early this morning on this matter has been removed.

It was on this thread very early this morning around 4 or 5AM Beantown time. There was nothing special about it, just a two line announcement, part of it quoted in your posting that I replied to with my inquiry.

My curiosity is always aroused when a posting is removed for absolutely no discernible reason.  :icon_scratch:

PY does yeoman Admin work on the tech end to keep the Diner running.  He doesn't do editorial work as far as I know or have seen.

Main editorial Admins are myself, Surly and Eddie.  Monsta & LD also periodically do some editorial work.

I did not notice anything I posted as having been removed.

Yes I suppose so.  I haven't done any forum administration though.  I moderate on CyberSecurity - I once refused permission on a post by MKing who was trying to bypass some other refusal.

Are you now one of our out of the closet Censors, and has it been decided to make it public?

No.

Or are you an admin specific to technical matters on the Diner and not a new member of the thought police?

Yes. DD and SUN.  I am also still one on NBL's new site, though not active.

Perhaps there should be a new designation of "IT Admin" for those who need to be able to perform IT administration, (updates), but not Forum administration.  I don't know if that is possible - there's lots of admin things I haven't looked into.  I should note that anyone who has CPanel credentials, (yet another set of username/password), has the power to delete the whole site or totally fuck the whole thing up, so there should be as few of them as possible, consistent with there being at least one not on the "nearly dead" list.

Will you be posting under two different names?

No, unless I discover a down-side to Palloy2.

Since we are on the topic of Admins can I assume that Babbles And Pale Ryder are also regular posters who have been given admin designations under secret names to hide who they are.

No. Babbles was a very knowledgeable tech guy, when he was here, but he only stayed a short while.  I don't know about Pale Ryder.

I am going to close this thread and start up two new ones - Strictly DD Updates Log and Reporting Website Errors

This so that we can keep the 2 things separate.
